When Marianne Dissard and Raphael Mann were recording their version of Spanky & Our Gang’s ‘Give A Damn’ in the summer of ‘21, it felt like an urgent need...
[Raphael Mann:]
“We were responding to world events... Government responses to the pandemic, especially in our home countries of England & the US, were prioritising the interests of big business at the expense of ordinary people’s lives, there were fires raging across Arizona where Marianne was living as the result of rising temperatures, again on account of profits being put ahead of what’s really important... Against that background we’d just learned about the murder of George Floyd... And we reacted in the only way we knew how... We were engaged in the project of recording covers, using those songs from the past as a way of understanding the present... And so I put forward ‘Give A Damn’ because I thought we could say something through it that needed saying every bit as much as it had back in ‘68...
“I discovered the song in a much more light-hearted context... I was making my daughter a playlist of songs about days of the week... And on that I’d included two of Spanky’s hits, which I knew of previously from the radio, but I’d never investigated the group further than that... And I thought ‘these are actually great records... I wonder what else they did...’ and so came across ‘Give A Damn’... And immediately thought ‘Wow... We need to do this one...’”

The track was initially slated as a single, until Marianne’s versions of Townes Van Zandt’s ‘If I Needed You’ & Adriano Celentano’ ‘Prisencolinen...’ edged it out... But that wasn’t before we prepared a radio edit... And so we’ve included that version with the ‘Rappel’ album download as a bonus track (along with a ‘clean’ version of ‘Prisencolinen...’)
