🍯 Onion Syrup: Your Secret Kitchen Remedy for Coughs and Colds

When the seasons change and sniffles start creeping in, it’s the perfect time to turn to a little kitchen magic. There’s something so satisfying about using simple, everyday ingredients to create a remedy that really works. And guess what? If you’ve got onions and sugar—or honey—you’re already halfway there to making a powerful natural cough syrup.

Onion syrup might not sound glamorous, but trust us, it works. This humble concoction soothes coughs, calms irritated airways and even gives your immune system a little boost. Plus, it’s ridiculously easy to make, budget-friendly, and a fun project to do with kids (they love the layering part!).

Here’s how you do it:

Start with a clean jar and 2–3 onions. Red onions are a bit milder, but white ones work just as well. If you’ve got garlic or ginger hanging around, toss those in for an extra immune boost. Slice the onions nice and thin, then layer them at the bottom of the jar—about 3cm deep.

Next, add a layer of sugar or honey, about 1cm thick. If you’ve got brown molasses sugar, even better—it’s packed with minerals like iron and magnesium. Then just keep building it up: onions, garlic or ginger, sweetener, repeat. Finish with a generous layer of sugar or honey, seal the jar, and let it sit overnight.

By morning, you’ll have a dark, sticky syrup that’s packed with goodness. You can use it as is or strain it for a smoother texture—it’s totally up to you.

So, why does this work? Onions are rich in quercetin, a natural compound that helps calm inflammation and soothe irritated airways. Garlic adds antimicrobial power, and ginger acts as a warming expectorant. And the sweetener draws out the juices, soothes your throat, and helps preserve the syrup.

Adults can take 2–3 teaspoons three times a day, and kids can have 1 teaspoon. Start using it as soon as you notice symptoms for best results. And if you’re feeling adventurous, try adding a pinch of turmeric for extra anti-inflammatory power or a squeeze of lemon for a vitamin C kick.

Oh ginger...you are amazing 😍 I never used to like it but now, fresh ginger is a staple for me with it's health benefits, it's fire and warmth!

Who else is a fan of ginger?

🫚 Our dear friend Ginger, the fiery root we know and love, has journeyed far from his native Southeast Asia to become a staple in our kitchens and medicine cabinets. Though not native to the UK, this remarkable rhizome feels like family, lending its warm, energizing touch to countless remedies and recipes.

Ginger, a proud member of the Zingiberaceae family (alongside Turmeric and Cardamom), is more than just a spicy-sweet flavour. The underground stem, or rhizome, are a powerhouse of bioactive compounds like gingerol, renowned for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. And when dried, gingerol transforms into shogaol, a compound even more potent in its benefits—talk about versatility!

Through the centuries, Ginger has been our ally in warding off illness and restoring vitality. Hildegard of Bingen, the 12th-century German abbess and polymath, mentioned ginger in her seminal work Physica, where she described the herb as "warm" in nature and beneficial for health. She noted that ginger had the ability to aid digestion, warm the stomach, and improve overall vitality. Hildegard emphasized the ability to combat the effects of "cold" humors in the body, aligning with the medieval medical belief in balancing the four humors to maintain health.

Easing bloating, relieving nausea—whether from morning sickness, motion sickness, or post-surgery—and even helps to soothe arthritis and muscle pain. On frosty days, Ginger’s knack for improving circulation can warm our cold hands and feet, while supporting cardiovascular health. Truly, Ginger seems to have a remedy for whatever ails us.

Cultivating Ginger is just as rewarding as enjoying freshly prepped teas. Start with plump rhizomes that have visible buds, plant them in well-draining soil, and keep them evenly moist.

We make so many excuses so we don't start something new because...what if we fail?

Well...good! We should fail because if we got everything right first time, how would we learn and grow?

Whatever it is you want to do, throw yourself in to it and treat it as a learning experience. Instead of fearing failure, embrace it and watch what you learn along the way!
