Our brilliant volunteer Kinga is the subject of the ‘Student Spotlight’ in the latest edition of Nursery World – huge congratulations!

Kinga says “During my 3 years of studying at the University of Plymouth, I have had the amazing opportunity to volunteer with Jeremiah's Journey. I have participated within the grief journey groups, predominantly with children, where we as a group of volunteers supported and guided children to manage their emotions, through activities such as memory boxes and breathing exercises.

Through volunteering and participating with Jeremiah's Journey I have developed my interpersonal skills such as empathy. Furthermore, I experienced how much of a difference can be made to individuals lives through the support that we as a charity provide, children during the first week of grief journey are usually shy and keep to themselves, whereas on the last week of group children are outgoing and have created new friendships. These experiences have been rewarding for me and my educational journey”

Research Project for Child Bereavement | University of Plymouth

Miriam was supported by Jeremiah’s Journey as a child and is now doing research with our co-founder and Trustee, Professor Jacqui Stedmon at the University of Plymouth. The research is about how families remember the person who has died, and they hope it will be used to help bereaved families in the future.

We are incredibly grateful to our wonderful supporter, Helen for her thoughtful donation of a “Caring Teddy Bear” this beautifully handmade teddy bear comes with a matching blanket and a book, all presented in a box to keep it in.
This kind gesture will bring comfort to someone navigating the difficult journey of grief.
A teddy bear may seem like a simple gift, but for a bereaved child or young person, it can be a source of warmth, solace, and connection—a reminder that they are not alone. Having something to hold onto in moments of grief can provide immense emotional support. Thank you, Helen, for sharing your kindness and helping us bring comfort to those who need it most. Your generosity makes a difference!

Our wonderful ‘bereavement services’ volunteers are hugely committed to making a difference in the lives of others…

Our 7-week grief group programme will support over 150 families this year and our January group started on Wednesday. Ahead of this, our volunteers met for the usual briefing.

Although there are some very tough conversations for them to prepare for, there are lighter moments to share together.

‘Fidget Toys’ can be noisy and were being tried out in advance to avoid unnecessary distractions for younger children, creating debate and laughter along the way!

We are so grateful to our volunteer team, who bring extensive combined experience into the roles they play in supporting bereaved families.

Currently, we have volunteer vacancies for our Wednesday evening programme. It runs 3 times a year for 7 weeks and volunteers are required between 5.45pm and 7.45pm - we are particularly seeking people with any of the following attributes: 'lived experience' of losing a parent or significant loved one as a child,
a background in CYP development, teaching, CYP mental health & wellbeing, psychology, counselling, grief services (list not exhaustive)

Please reach out to find out more if you are interested, we will be delighted to hear from you!

THANK YOU Plymouth Citybus

We were delighted to have been chosen by CityBus as one of the beneficial charities for the 2024 Santa Bus.

Thanks to the kindness of CityBus and the generosity of visitors to the Santa Bus Jeremiah's Journey have received a fantastic £951.56.

This money will enable us to support a family through a programme of ‘family therapy’ bespoke to them. These sessions support families where the situation or family dynamic is more complex.

Starting back at school or work in a New Year can be especially difficult after the death of a loved one. New Year is often a time for reflection and setting expectations for the coming year, which can make it harder to deal with memories.

You may be facing a year ahead of significant anniversaries.
Remember to be kind to yourself
Remember that the grieving process is very individual
Know that grief usually becomes less intense over time, but the sense of loss can last for decades
Remember that certain events, memories, or mementos can bring back strong emotions

Our bereavement support team are here to support any child, young person or family who needs some help. We have a range of specialist ‘age appropriate’ services that we tailor to individual needs.

Please reach out by messenger, phone or email.

Christmas can be a very difficult time when you are grieving. We have just held our annual ‘Caring at Christmas’ families day which was organised by our wonderful bereavement services coordinator Sian.

As the season which celebrates love and family time, it’s no wonder that Christmas and new year can be a time when bereaved families may struggle even more than usual with their grief.

‘Caring at Christmas’ enables bereaved families to remember their loved ones in their own way, in a safe and compassionate space.

Thankyou for supporting us so that we can be there for those that need us, at Christmas and always...
