Great session this evening recording drums with - didn't get pictures but sent a mix of the drum mics through to a guitar amp in the second live room with a pair of omni room mics for a cool room sound!

One of two releases out today that we worked on, the latest Confyde single! This was mixed by us, with some reamping on bass, and we recorded the group vocals at the end of the song. Group vocals were recorded with a pair of Akg C414, a pair of sontronics stc-10 in ortf and an sm7b. Through Bart HRK, GAP Pre 73's and ART MPA II preamps. Mixing for the song was done mostly ITB, with some outboard reverbs and compression. Particularly enjoyed getting some spacey reverbs through Valhalla plugs and lots of use of the awesome Klanghelm MJUC compressor, one of our favourite compressor plugins. https://youtu.be/LvQqWspZSF0

New drum stool in room 1! Replacing our old mapex stool that was on its last legs!

Dear diary, today I built this passive monitor switch into our monitor controller/volume attenuator (Nanopatch.) There's nothing really on the market that does this like we wanted it to. Basically a volume k**b with a 3 way speaker selector, all passive. We started at first by buying a passive 1in 3out xlr switcher. My first idea was to remove the switch from the pcb of this and extend it via cable, and build it in to our Nanopatch. This didn't work out for various reasons, and instead the better (and much easier) solution was to buy a 3 way 4 pole switch, wire that up to a bunch of balanced multicore cable we had knocking about, to an xlr panel at the back of our desk, which our 3 sets of speakers then plug in to. Works really well, is totally silent and transparent and I learned a lot doing it!

Our colour preamp has a LA-4 opto compressor colour module card, which has some settings (ratio, limit, attack) on jumpers on the card. Which means taking it out of the rack whenever you want to change one of them. So instead we wired up the jumpers to some spdt switches so we have control from the front of the rack! Works a treat! There is also a trim k**b on the LA-4 which I'm tempted to move to the outside of the rack also, but that requires a bit more permanent soldering work. Seeing as these are now discontinued (absolutely gutted that we just bought in to these colour cards and they're now discontinued - we would've bought a bunch!) I'm not sure if we want to do anything that might risk damage!

Dear diary, today I made some passive line to mic level attenuator cables. This brings a line level signal down to the correct impedence and padded by 40db for mic level. Why would you want to do this? For running signals out of your DAW into tube/character/transformer based mic preamps for some extra saturation. Many other uses too! I've been enjoying running some signals through our new MPQ568C mic preamp! We are running German Console and LA-4 colour cards in this preamp so you can get some super cool sounds! Really impressed with this preamp, super clean and impressive sounding and coupled with the colour cards you can dial in loads of different coloured tones!

We've had the pleasure of working with Hockley Hustle on the mastering for many of the great releases on this Nottingham artists collaboration album over the last year. For this track by Natalie Duncan and Rob Green we handled the mixing and re-recorded the drums which was a lot of fun! We wanted to get a fat sounding hip hop/70's inspired snare and warm sounding kick drum. We experimented with different tunings and mic positioning till we found the right sound. It's a pretty incredible song and it was an honour to be involved! Black Bay Studio did a wonderful job on the mastering.
