Hello my loves, it's been a while(que stained playing in your head if you're of a certain age). I've been run ragged with work and only just got back on the history reading wagon. The beautiful spooky goth wife gifted me all these wonderful books. The first one finished was the medieval archer and next up is sweins invasion. This is kind a key book for me as this is roughly what danelaw uses as one of it key history points to date shows.
Recently seen a piece of art being shared on numerous scifi pages I'm part of. The art in question is in fact a chart showing numerous space ships and there measurements in relation to each other. It a beautiful piece of work but the issue is half of the ships drawn on it are not at the right size.
This has been bugging me for days as it of course highlights all the wonder of star war, star trek and 40k ships but down plays an aweful lot of amazing space opera and dystopian space novels and the shear size of the ships they use.
My biggest complaint in for a series of ships based in something called the honorverse. The superdreadnought class ships in these series of books are given measurements at 4.5km in length from bow to stern and 0.6km at the beam. That puts them at the same scale as an imperial retribution class battle ship. But on this chart they are shown as being tiny little 1.5Km things. With a beam that could be no more than 0.2km wide.

So I've recently been sent a number of articles from both you tube and other media sources regarding shields of the early medieval period and their use. I will have to put something together to discuss this subject as like all history, it is subjective and open to peoples interpretations which can lead to a single minded view about the subject.
Second point about rings of power is why isn't numenor in black and silver as they have often been described in the books. Their white armour just looks cheap and plastic.
What the hell is the the rings of power even doing. Mithril has been around since the first age. And it has nothing to do with the silmarils as far I know.
So we've recorded this as a little lesson in talking to the public at shows as a beginners basics. Hopefully it will be useful to new people or people looking to learn some basic info about what they'll see in the usual Living History set up

Spooky goth wife here. Let it be known that AHC has watched the first episode of the Rings of Power....he has been rummaging through books and chuntering since. Let it be known there is a new episode coming that will most likely be called "Everything is wrong" 🤦♀️
Behold my new dining room/ quite place to paint miniatures.
It's almost the bank holiday weekend and I'm baking large quantities of bread. Why it must be the whitby viking weekend at whitby abbey. Me and the spooky goth wife are absolutely burnt out however from the house move so if you see us at whitby please be aware we may be very withdrawn and husk like.
Off out to lunch and then the cinema with the greatest lady in the world aka the spooky goth wife, for it is her birthday and shes taken a well deserved day off from work.
So I'm sat watching the Vinland saga anime on netflix, I wont say its historically accurate but for an anime it's not that bad at all and it's a damn site better than either the Last kingdom or Vikings.
So as all who follow me know I am a reenactor and yesterday was training day for danelaw. Normally we don't have photos due to the fact there isn't normally anyone free to take any. However the Spooky Goth Wife came with me and took some. The sharpe eye among you will notice we had a visitor in the from of Hrútar lið Vikings, see the blue, white and black shield. You may also notice that some of the shield wall look a little young in the face. Well there the junior members of danelaw being put through the formation part of the wall so they can learn it for when they go to sit there basic safety assessment in the next few years or so.
I will be live shortly playing ac valhalla. However while I'm playing I'm going to be running it as a sit down Q&A clinic for any one who has questions about medieval stuff. Hrútar lið Vikings if you guys are wanting any info feel free to dive into the comment section.
Good evening my lovely people, I hope all of you out there are doing okay.
Me and the spooky goth wife have the dreaded rona, now I due to my own up bringing as a child tend to not suffer to badly with illnesses, I will say I look rough as hosues but I'm actually doing quite well all things considered. The SGW however has been knocked for a 6 right out the park, bless the spooky dear shes running a high fever and is pretty broken, I can see me having a couple of sleepless nights looking after her but when you love some one that much you do what has to be done.
We finally may have a completion date and an actual moving date for the new abode we're buying. If all goes to plan we should be moved by the end of this month. The down side right now is we are both ill and the house is now starting to fill with boxes of all of our stuff packed away as we pack up everything for the move This of course is causing the dog to freak out as well as his whole world is in upheaval.
But on a bright note of once this is all done, we can hopefully get back to producing podcasts and filling the world with pointless history knowledge along side the scifi and fantasy as well.

Angry History Chef IN The Quest For Anything Vaguely Authentic
So from last monday to this monday has been a very long week hear in the spooky goth history house. We've been a viking and a head banging and to top it all my knew board game arrived. The wife and the dog are thoroughly washed out but it's been great.

Today is danelaws first show of the season and I thought I would just show off the series of cloak pin and brooches i have in my small treasure hoard. So starting from the top we have a beautiful imported silver irish penanular brooch with a smaller cheaper locally based bronze penanular below it. Now socially speaking the top brooch would have been either imported as tradable commodity to the highest levels of early medieval society or used as a possible source of wealth as we find silver brooches similar to this in some of the hoards found over the years.
To the left of the penanluers we have a lovely long dog/dragon headed pin from hedby. This is a direct copy of the original design, however this one is bronze and I believe the original was bone. I have seen it used in combination with a neck ties on cloaks as one historical interpretation but I have also seen it used by it self also with a loose coward attached to the pin it self. And in fact due to it being a pin it can also be interpreted as a hair pin given as I said the original being in bone.
And to the right I have my two saxon disc brooches that stem more from a historical interpretation of saxon brooches rather than exact copies. The larger one is what I tend to use for the alfred and his immediate successors period and the smaller is what I use at later shows based towards the end of the 10th and into the 11th century. The disc brooch is in many respects a very much iconic saxon piece of jewellery however like all thing historical that doesn't mean the Scandinavian settlers in britian didn't wear them as well or adopt and change them to give them their own unique style.
All of these brooches have seen many years of service hence the fact they're all a bit dirty and worn. However this does give them more realism I find when talking to the public.
