Galley Beggar Press

Galley Beggar Press Galley Beggar Press - an old-fashioned publisher for the twenty-first century. Our aim is to be an old fashioned publisher for the 21st Century.

Galley beggar Press is a publishing company based in Norwich co-founded and directed by Eloise Millar and Sam Jordison. Old fashioned because we believe in the beauty of books and the printed word, in the importance of nurturing authors and paying serious attention to editing, and in the vital importance of art as well as commerce.

21st Century, not just because that’s where we are, but because w

e also believe in the fantastic potential of ebooks to reach new audiences, to spread our writers’ precious words around the world and to revive and revitalise books that would otherwise either be out of print or lost on the backlist.

“Two men sit at a small circular steel table. They have snuck in cans of lager and are drinking them, taking big gulps that make loud sucking sounds when they take their mouths away. There is a pack of Benson & Hedges between them.”

Happy Monday! And a very quick note to say that our much-loved critical reading class - hosted by Galley Beggar co-director and Guardian journalist Sam Jordison - will be launching a new set of classes in October.

It's:

(i) full-to-bursting with an interesting and eclectic range of writers (Stephen King! Sylvia Townsend Warner! Paul Auster!);

(ii) will fill your autumn and winter evenings with excellent conversations and brilliant reading; and

(iii) there's still plenty of time to read the first book, before the class begins.

Wait, what's this?! An early and MAGNIFICENT review for our author Mark Bowles
and All My Precious Madness:

"Elegant and darkly funny... A devastating satire on the way in which class, education and masculinity act as a kind of trap [... with an] unnervingly beautiful conclusion. All My Precious Madness is a strange, uncanny and engrossing creation."

Thank you so much, , and Jeremy Wikeley!

All My Precious Madness is available in all good bookshops from 26th September, and you can pre-order a copy here: https://www.galleybeggar.co.uk/paperback-shop/all-my-precious-madness

“Vanessa was able to do this because she was a part-time personal trainer whose feats of flexibility and core strength received hundreds-of-thousands of TikTok views. She called herself a content creator. It was roughly a year since I was last able to secretly think this was a self-important term, because it was roughly a year since she started making more money than me.”
