Residents in Ventnor, St Lawrence, Whitwell and Niton are now reporting a total loss of water supply or low pressure this afternoon (Saturday) just hours after a warning 4,600 properties could be cut off.

As previously reported, Southern Water says 4,600 customers in the Ventnor area may experience an ‘intermittent loss of supply’ or ‘temporary low pressure’ to the mains water supply as it works to recharge the wider fresh water network.

It follows problems at Testwood Water Treatment Works on the mainland, which has led to 20,000 homes being without water.

An investigation into last week’s devastating flooding is being launched by the Isle of Wight Council, which will include exploring the actions of both the Environment Agency and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

A Section 19 Flood Investigation under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 will look into the failures which led to homes and businesses flooding, particularly in the Monktonmead area of Ryde.

Council Leader, Councillor Phil Jordan, has said that it is ‘obvious’ that the response was inadequate and that ‘failings led to unnecessary damage and disruption’.

WATER SUPPLIES THREATENED AGAIN WITH NORTHERN PARTS OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT AT RISK

Southern Water has revealed that it is struggling to fill reservoirs in northern parts of the Isle of Wight tonight (Thursday) due to the temporary shut down of its Testwood Water Supply Works in Southampton.

Yet another water emergency is emerging just days after 31,000 properties across the Island almost lost fresh water supply. Thankfully, the situation was quickly improved and no homes or businesses lost water in the end.

SSEN PREPARED FOR POWER CUTS AS IT MOVES TO YELLOW ALERT STATUS AHEAD OF STORM CIARAN

The storm is due to hit central southern England – including the Isle of Wight – overnight tonight (Wednesday) and continue into Thursday, leading to several hours of strong winds, heavy rain and a risk of localised flooding.

SSEN would like to reassure its customers that it is well prepared for this period of bad weather. The decision to move to Yellow Alert status comes as a result of the increasing certainty about the storm’s duration and route, and the potential it has to cause damage to the electricity network.

Customers are encouraged to be prepared for the possibility of disruption to supplies by:

Saving the emergency power cut number – ‘105‘ – to your phone to report any loss of supply or damage to the electricity network
Visiting SSEN’s Power Track Website to give you details of power cuts and restoration times. You can also report power cuts and network damage through the Power Track app
Going to SSEN’s website where there is a wealth of advice and information on how to deal with a power cut, or to chat live to one of SSEN’s advisors via its Webchat service
Customers are also eligible for SSEN’s Priority Services Register (PSR) if they:

Are deaf or hard of hearing
Have a disability
Live with children under five
Are blind or partially sighted
Have a chronic illness
Use medical equipment/aids reliant on electricity
Are over 60.

THE RNLI is reminding Islanders to be aware of the dangers as Storm Ciarán is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to our shores from this Wednesday evening.

An amber soon to be RED weather warning has been issued for the Isle of Wight and the South Coast with winds forecast to reach 85 - 100mph in some coastal locations. The expected strong winds will also bring heavy rain posing a safety risk to those visiting the coast.

FIREFIGHTERS WON'T BE SENT TO FLOODING UNLESS LIFE IS AT RISK

Firefighters won’t immediately respond to reports of flooding in homes and businesses when Storm Ciaran hits, unless there is a threat to life.

Historically, fire crews have responded to flooding events on the Island to assist with pumping out properties and reducing the risk of further flooding. However, during last week’s flooding, there was a noticeable lack of fire service support.

It has now been confirmed that if you call 999 during a flood, a fire appliance will not automatically be sent – unless it is deemed there is a threat to life. Instead, call operators will triage calls and provide advice on dealing with flooding, including providing contact details for the local authority and Floodline.

STORM CIARAN: LIST OF FLOOD WARNINGS IN PLACE AHEAD OF THE ARRIVAL OF STORM CIARAN

The Island is far more prepared this time around but the impact is expected to be the same – if not worse – as the ground is already saturated. An amber weather warning is in force as winds are expected to near 100mph.

The Environment Agency has this afternoon issued a new flood warning for East Cowes, Cowes and tidal areas of Newport stating that flooding is expected and residents should take action, activating any property flood protection products they may have.

Flood warnings are also in place for Bembridge, Brading and Sandown on the Eastern Yar, as well as Alverstone, Landbridge, Wroxall and Whitwell further upriver on the Eastern Yar.

A further flood warning is in place for the town of Yarmouth.

A lesser flood alert is also in force for the Isle of Wight coast, where flooding is possible. However, a storm surge is expected overnight which will cause overtopping of sea defences and coastal flooding, particularly in the West Wight, in Seaview and in The Bay.
