Took a trip down memory lane for today's newsletter. It's the start of a new weekly series which will take a more global stance while the main Tuesday newsletter remains firmly rooted in the north of England. I hope you enjoy it!
Community fridges, low-carbon travel and why even the most informed people would rather take the easy option on climate
I've been looking at solar farms this week and waiting to see if the details of the Autumn Statement will mean compo for those living nearby.
“Why not mount them on the roofs in business parks or industrial estates or as shelters in car parks as in the Metro Centre? Why do all new houses not have to have them?"
Bringing you a bit of everything in this week's newsletter - there's a few drops of water, wondering about the repurposing of green bins and a more detailed look at the UK's legislative plans for the environment (spoiler: that doesn't take very long!)
"So this will be the 4th Secretary of State has had since 2020 and the 8th ministerial job Steve Barclay has had during the same period. Pause on that for a second. " Feargal Sharkey
Thanks to the book experts at The Wonky Tree for today’s guest post

As Yorkshire Water opens the latest public consultation, it’s facing pressure from all quarters - campaigners, customers, environment agency, local councillors and more. My latest Substack dives in. https://open.substack.com/pub/thenortherneco/p/water-water-a-rivers-special?
“We are progressing with our investigation with a view to prosecute, should our evidence identify that polluting offences have taken place.”
Love this! Have followed the work of Incredible Edibles for some years and this news gives us some hope and inspiration https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/news/hull-east-yorkshire-news/hull-first-uk-back-right-8837591
Campaigners hope idea will go national, as councillors explain how it could work
I always love speaking with Herb Kim, he has such an interesting perspective on life and his events always capture something inspiring. Here I got to talk with him about 's upcoming Bright Ideas Gathering or "Britain's got intelligence" as he puts it neatly.
“It’s about leaving with energy to want to improve yourself, improve the things you do and just to be positive about life and then actually do those things.”
Do you ever look at your recycling bin with horror at the waste? That very thought prompted this businesswoman to take action.
“One day we just looked at our household recycling bins and just couldn’t believe how many different things and products we were buying.”
We are again appealing for witnesses after this poor buzzard was found fighting for it's life at the top of Daleside Road in Rosedale. X-rays revealed that it had been shot, but fortunately it survived the trauma and is currently receiving intensive veterinary care.
PC Jez Walmsley of the Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside safer neighbourhood team stated "This is the third buzzard in the last four months that has been shot or died in suspicious circumstances in the Rosedale area". I would appeal to anyone who has any information about who is persecuting these magnificent birds to come forward. Please email me [email protected]
This week's post takes a deeper look at the State of Nature report and some of the local actions being taken to address it.
Taking a local lens to the State of Nature report
Very much enjoyed interviewing Dr Matt Sawyer who works on helping GPs, dentists and other primary care providers about his work. Hope you enjoy hearing more about it too!
The net zero challenge Rishi Sunak isn’t talking about

What started out as a simple local enquiry has led to a chain of events and a two year journey which is still ongoing.
“Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.” Kahlil Gibran, poet.

A look at different ways to live such as communes, co-housing, intergenerational residencies with the author and social entrepreneur Mim Skinner. It's the first of an occasional 'Lunch with....' series of longer reads that I'm going to do with inspiring people acting locally in the hop of making the world a more sustainable place. https://thenortherneco.substack.com/p/author-and-social-entrepreneur-mim
Looking forward to the Bank Holiday as I'm sure you will be too! Also excited about coming back to work (there's a thing!) as I've a cracking interview to share on Tuesday. If you enjoyed the article in The Guardian about cohousing, you won’t want to miss my post coming out on Tuesday which looks at this issue but from a much wider perspective with North East author
Mim Skinner. Subscribe now at http://thenortherneco.com to have it delivered to your inbox. See you Tuesday! https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/aug/24/we-have-brothers-sons-lovers-but-they-cant-live-here-the-happy-home-shared-by-26-women
With residents aged from 58 to 94, New Ground is the UK’s first cohousing community exclusively for older women. Setting it up was an 18-year battle – but with soaring numbers of people living alone, is this an idea whose time has come?
I get to speak with some very interesting people for my new Substack project. This week I interviewed a Professor who manages to navigate the incredibly complex water company financials.
The old journalistic adage says that to get to the truth - follow the money. But when it comes to looking at the finances of water companies, that's a rather labyrinthian process
This week's newsletter on Substack - staying with the river pollution theme and looking at actions being taken locally.
Talking with the fisher turned conservationist and citizen scientist Ron Wood plus local politicians speak on the River Swale sewage issue
Well it's been a while since I've posted here but back in saddle! Working on a short series looking at the issue of river pollution locally and some of the potential solutions to the wider problem.
“No one should have to do all this just to get decent water in their river, we all deserve clean water.”
