NEWARK FUN DAY WELCOMES OVER 800 VISITORS TO YMCA COMMUNITY & ACTIVITY VILLAGE

More than 800 visitors attended a free family fun day on Saturday 16th July to mark the opening of the YMCA Community & Activity Village in Newark.

Entertainment included performances from local bands and dancers, sports trials and activities, artisan food stalls and interactive music sessions.

VIPs, local businesses, partners and those who have worked on the ground-breaking project were also invited to a preview event to celebrate the part they played in creating the Village, which will sit at the heart of the local community for many years to come.

Visitors were invited on guided tours inside the Village to see the facilities, which include a nursery, business hub, conference centre, strength and conditioning gym, athletics track, football pitches, multi-use courts and the largest climbing centre in the region.

Pre-registration for the nursery and for gym membership is now open via the website. YMCA Newark & Sherwood is a not-for-profit, local charity, enabling members to give back to the range of programmes and services that support children and vulnerable adults across Nottinghamshire.

The football pitches, athletics track and outdoor sports facilities are already open to the local community and the facilities inside the Village opening later this summer.

Todd Cauthorn, Executive Director, YMCA Newark & Sherwood, said: “The fun day was a huge success and it was our chance to thank the local community who have supported the project since the early stages. We even had the weather on our side, making it a truly special day for all involved.

“The size and scale of this project is unique for a YMCA and unlike anything the local area has ever seen before. I am confident that everyone who attended the fun day will be back here in the future to enjoy everything the Village has to offer.”

THE LATEST GHOST WALK STORY FROM OUR REGULAR CONTRIBUTER IAN GILLANDERS.

While hosting Newark's Historical Ghost Walk, I also held An Evening With A Difference. This event was conducted in old historical locations within the Newark area, varying from, Public Houses, Hotels, Victorian Stately Homes, Coffee Shops etc.

A venue which was used more than once, was the charming, pleasant, old and quaint Admiral Rodney in Southwell. This hostalry has been serving food and ales for centuries. The oldest part dates back to the 1600s. Inside the bar area, is a beam which is said to have come from the HMS Rodney. Also near the bar there is a well.

After we had finished our meal, the scene was set for us to begin our vigil around a plethora of rooms.

Embarking our way into the dark cellar, there was a mixture of excitement, fear of the unknown and the adrenalin was flowing.

It was at this point some of the non believers in the group were starting to feel apprehensive. There were no windows in the cellars and no heating.
After a few minutes, two ladies both said at the same time, they could see a group of four men, who were sat around a table playing cards. They believed these men were from around the Victorian era and they were all wearing flat caps. As soon as we entered the cellar, their attention was drawn to us. They wanted to know why we were in the cellar and why did we keep staring at them. It was noticed by every one in the group that there was a dramatic change in the cellar. The atmosphere became very oppressive and the room was very cold.

The two ladies then suggested to us it would be best to leave that area straight away, because the four men were now walking in our direction and they were getting very agitated and aggressive.

Once we had left the cellar the ladies told us that the four men were smugglers and they thought we had come to take their loot.

Similar events to this down in the cellar have been picked up by different groups.

Another interesting room was the Function room.

There was a sighting of a male who was seen at the far end of the room. Again this room was in total darkness. The person who saw this young man believed he was from around the eighteenth century and that he was a stable boy. This was backed up, as a lady sensed that this room would have been stables for the horses. Apparently this lady suffers with hay fever. While she was standing in the corner she had an attack of hay fever. This was interesting as we were in February and not Summer.

Some of the group said they felt as though they were being watched and were being pushed in the back. The general consensus was that the group of smugglers had followed us into the function

If you are interested in reading more about these stories, I have written a book called Newark's Historical Ghost Walks, which is available on Amazon for £7.99.
It is also available on Kindle.

Thank you. Ian Gillanders.
