Zoe had already done a pretty good demo of the song when we started work which really helped shape the vision for the song. Loved working on this song and we wanted to really create something that was cinematic in sound whilst still giving it a alt-pop kind of vibe. Loved how this one turned out!

The songwriter who doesn’t perform his own songs gave a simple brief: Make it sound big and fit for a pop group! I dont know if I succeeded but the songwriter was happy and I had a lot of fun working on it!

We started this from a lyric that Ella had written which was pretty much complete then we spent an afternoon in the studio coming up with a melody idea that you hear on the demo. It just felt right and very instinctive from the beginning!
From there I started on the instrumental before we had a session getting all the vocals done. My favourite of Ella’s so far!

The whole concept of reference songs and using them in having a chat with your producer is super important BUT only if they’re used in the right way.
Otherwise you run the risk of your producer chasing or even copying what has already been done on those songs. At the end of the day, you wanna still come out with something original! Chase the vibe NOT the actual song…

This vocal chain is pretty standard for what I use on a lot of tracks tho individual settings and types of reverbs/delays etc vary depending on the song I’m working on.
Ultimate goal is always to bring out the very best of the source vocal and not change it radically unless the genre of music requires that. Vocal mixing should always about accentuating the greatness of the vocal performance itself!
