THE MISSION
Episode 15
© Ayo Omolayo
Since we couldn't get an affordable shelter, we decided to rest under a cozy tree. I tried my best to find sleep as the cold and insects flying around made sure finding sleep was impossible.
I noticed how Tunde at his own little corner laid down and in a few minutes he was gone. He slept soundly after reciting a particular scripture which I had clearly, 'He gives his beloved sleep.'
That word stuck in my head as it was obvious I was going to spend the night awake. Tunde was able to sleep and I was struggling to sleep. Does that mean God loves him more than me? Of course God will choose him 100 times more than me.
If there is anybody God was not supposed to have any business with, I'm the one. I betrayed him over and over and even tried to push Tunde into breaking his fellowship with him. So if God was going to punish me by choosing not to give me sleep, I deserved it.
"HE GIVES HIS BELOVED SLEEP." Came the gentle voice in my head.
"Why would you choose to give sleep to only his beloved? What does that mean anyway? What does it mean to give his beloved sleep?"
"REMEMBER WHAT TUNDE TAUGHT YOU ABOUT THE WOMAN WHO DECIDED TO DISTURB JESUS UNTIL SHE GOT THE ANSWER TO HER PRAYERS."
"Yeah! That story would never erase itself from my memory. It is the first bible study I have had after getting born again. I don't think I will ever forget it for the rest of my life."
"GOOD, IT MEANS IT IS GOD'S DUTY TO PROVIDE YOU SLEEP. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ONE PERSON IS GOD'S FAVOURITE, WHILE HE HATES THE OTHER PERSON."
"So why am I struggling to sleep?"
"HAVE YOU HEARD THIS SCRIPTURE BEFORE THAT SAYS YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE?"
"Yeah!"
"THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE. YOU DON'T KNOW AND THAT IS THE REASON WHY THE ENEMIES IS STEALING WHAT LEGALLY BELONGS TO YOU. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TO CLAIM WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED YOU IN HIS WORD. THROUGH FAITH AND PRAYERS, DECLARING WHAT YOU BELIEVE WITH THE WORDS OF YOUR MOUTH."
"Hmmmmmmm! I believe the word of God is true. I do not have to struggle to sleep, because he gives his beloved sleep. Though I am in the midst of this forest with a worried and trembling heart, beating in my chest, I know he gives his beloved sleep.
The Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want anything. He makes me lie down in green pastures. Father, give your beloved sleep. Let my body, soul and spirit obey your word, because Tunde said your word is more powerful than anything.
He said your word does not return to you empty. He also said you are not a liar that everything you promised me in your word is my. But you said I must be ready to claim it and insist in prayers until I see them manifest. I don't really know if what I'm doing is right, but I know that you are supposed to give me sleep.
Lord I want to sleep and I need you to help me do that. Cause my body to fall asleep in the name of Jesus!"
I guess this was the first prayer I ever prayed as a child of God. I have never really prayed to God before and I was doing it because I needed to sleep badly. The forest was cold and full of different bugs that we are ready to bite. But I still needed to sleep in the midst of all this.
It was as if those words I spoke to God came alive. I remember Tunde telling me that Jesus said that the words that he speaks unto us are spirit and life. So Jesus does not just speak empty or dead words. Whenever Jesus speaks, his words begin to perform whatever he said.
So if Jesus said be healed, that word begins to make people that are sick to be healed. It means the words of God have life and can do anything.
I began to notice how dizzy I became and I laid down. I opened my eyes to find Tunde in his kneeling position praying. I remember what he called it this time, quiet time. Ever since we have been in the forest, he always wakes up very early in the morning to perform this ritual. He says he's having fellowship with God. I really wish I could do the same.
"WHY NOT? GO AHEAD AND JOIN HIM!" Said the gentle voice.
Why was I always talking to myself these days? I sat up and began to watch him in order to get a clue on what to imitate.
"YOU DON'T HAVE TO STRUGGLE DOING THAT. MEET HIM AND TELL HIM YOU WANT TO JOIN HIM."
"But he's with God, I don't think he would want to be disturbed from his fellowship with him."
"JUST GIVE IT A TRY AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS."
"Okay! Sharon, I really don't know why you are talking to yourself, but it is well with you," I said that I stood up and walked up to where he was playing.
"Sharon," he smiled at me immediately I approached him.
"Oh! You seem like you were expecting me."
"Of course I am, join me!" He said and held out his hand to me.
I smiled and took it, not letting go of it for a second.
"Communicating with God is just as simple as talking with your best friend. But the only thing is that the Bible says we should enter his presence with Thanksgiving. So for you to approach God, you need to start by thanking him."
"So how do I thank him?"
"Take a few moments to think about all the things he has done, then you can begin to tell him thank you. The Bible says I will enter his presence with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. You can never approach God if you do not follow the route of thanksgiving."
"God, I am grateful for saving my life countless times in this jungle. I thank you for making Tunde to accompany me. If I were the only one in this forest, I would have committed su***de by now. I am such a stubborn and arrogant person. I don't even know why you choose to show me mercy, because left to myself, I wouldn't have forgiven myself.
I'm a very bad person. I commit fornication a lot and I always hated you back then. I don't know if I still hate you now but, I'm starting to like you. How do I still find myself liking Tunde more than you."
"Sharon!" Tunde called and playfully spanked me.
"What? I'm talking to my bestie and you need to leave us alone!" I grinned.
"This is not a joke Sharon. Please, take this all seriously. If you think you are going to start making me laugh with your funny prayers then I would have to excuse you."
"Okay! I'm sorry! But the truth is I love you so much."
"Thank you! Now focus on talking to god I'm telling him what is truly in your heart. Stop bringing jokes up."
"But you're supposed to say you love me."
"Sharon! We are praying here! And why are you holding my hand like this?" He said and released himself from my grip.
"Tunde! There's nothing bad if you tell me you love me too. Do you hate me?"
"Sharon, we are having a prayer session. Please I would love us to focus on the prayers for now."
"And I would love us to focus on you affirming your love to me. You don't have to mean it, I just want to hear you say it."
"Sharon don't push me into walking out on you, because that is what I'm about to do."
"I'm sorry!" I said and lowered my head.
"Good! Now let's focus."
"But do you hate me? Am I so annoying to you?"
"Sharon!" He shouted.
My eyes darted wildly, my body trembling as I cowered, attempting to escape the verbal onslaught.
With tears welling up in my eyes, I reached out and gently touched his arm, my voice barely above a whisper.
"I'm so sorry, I never meant to hurt you," but he didn't say a word .
My face contorted in regret. My eyes, once bright and vibrant, now dull and sunken, reflected the profound sadness that had taken residence within me, weighing me down like an anchor.
My words tumbled out in a rush.
"I'm almost sorry, I shouldn't have spoken without thinking, please forgive me."
"Okay! Are you ready to learn how to pray or you want to continue wasting my time?"
"I want to learn," I said, my face brightening up with excitement.
"Good! And please don't try what you did with me next time. That's one of the best ways to get me angry and furious."
"I won't! I swear!"
"No! You are now a child of God and the Bible is against swearing as believers. Let your yes be yes and let your no be no. That's what the Bible says."
"Okay! I promise you I'm not going to ask you such weird questions again. I promise and swear to you."
He looked at me and I burst into laughter.
"Just joking!"
"I need you to be serious. I'm supposed to be having fellowship with God right now but I'm taking my time to teach you how you can have yours with him, without me having to sacrifice mine."
"Oh! Thank you so much for making this sacrifice."
"Nobody moves?" A man jumped out of the nearby bush and pulled his hunting gun at us.
"Jesus!" I screamed and hid behind Tunde.
"Oh!" It's you again!" The hunter said.
"Wow! God brought the hunter to us again," I said smiling.
"I thought you guys said you wanted to go home. I believe you have gotten home by now," he said scornfully.
"We are sorry for leaving abruptly. It was all my fault! I was so stubborn and stupid. Right now, we want to stay with you and your family."
"Who are you talking to? Me or the trees behind me?" He asked frowning at me.
I was shocked by his question. I thought once we met the hunter, he was going to bring us to a more comfortable shelter.
"We are sorry for leaving. We would love to stay with you for a while, please!"
"You would never set foot in my house again. Find your way out of this place just like you said you would. Good bye!" He said and made to leave.
I ran and grabbed his agbada.
"Please sir! We are so sorry for acting stupidly! It was all my fault!"
"Shhhhhh!" He said held up a finger to his lips demanding we all go silent.
"Something is coming!" He whispered.
"Jesus! Please save us!" I prayed within me. I was tired of all this. I hadn't taken a bath in days and felt really smelly. I want to go to the more comfortable place and rest. All this stress is too much on me.
Suddenly, someone jumped out of the bush, behind the hunter and ran towards him with full force. He didn't have enough time to pull the trigger before his opponent pinned him to the ground.
Judging from the way he was dressed, I knew he was one of the ritualists.
There was a little bit of struggle between the two men, but it seemed the strange guy was winning. He grabbed the hunter by the neck I was strangling him.
Tunde ran towards the fight and grabbed the huge tall dark man's arm. The man skillfully made a turn and the elbowed him on the face. Tunde crashed to the ground, groaning.
I picked a stick on the ground and ran towards the scene. On arrival, I wiped the ritualist guy with the stick on his eye.
"Aahhhhhhhhh!" He groaned in pain.
He released the hunter, but quickly rushed after the gun that was laying on the floor. He grabbed it and pointed at me.
"Jesus!"
To be continued............
Jesus said that the words that he speaks to us are spirit and life. The word of God and not just the letters. They are God's integrity given to us to rely on.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. God takes his words seriously more than anything. We must learn to hold on to his words and say them back to him.
We must not accept any other thing in our lives apart from his word. The more we insist and prayerfully declare his word, the more we will see them coming alive, in our lives.
I believe this messages for someone.
Sharon has gotten herself into another trouble. Let's find out what happens next week Monday.
Lord help me to hold on to your word and not allow experiences or the lies the devil whispers into my head to overcome my trust in the integrity of your word.
Can you make that your prayer point?
