🐄Top tips from our Advanced Heifer Team 🐄

They had the following question asked on insta: How should you transition from colostrum to milk replacer? And how much should they be having at what age?

Here's what they said 😎

Firstly, the initial colostrum feed in the first 2-6 hours of life is the most important (we all know that), but there are benefits to feeding colostrum, or transition milk (milk kept out of the tank post-calving), past 24 hours.

Though the calf can’t absorb any antibodies after 24 hours into the blood, transition milk provides local immunity in the gut. It also offers more protein and fat than any milk replacer or whole milk, and still contains high levels of bioactive compounds.

When transitioning either from colostrum or transition milk, some of you have problems - usually in the form of scours. This shouldn’t be the case. To minimise transition difficulties, we recommend the following:

1) Ensure colostrum/transition milk is harvested and fed hygienically.

2) Use a milk replacer that is 100% dairy protein, high skim, high in digestible fats, and formulated for optimal digestion/health (this will provide the calves with a product more similar to that of transition milk to support digestion and performance).

3) If you are moving from colostrum/transition milk onto a whey powder, you may see some differences in faecal score. This is because the casein in cows milk is digested differently to whey protein. You could create a mix between transition milk and CMR over 4 days, but you would need to ensure that your DM of your total feed is right (please ask us if you need guidance with this). If you move from colostrum to CMR, we must accept some differences in digestion for the first few days.

4) Get your volumes up within the first 7-14 days. For example, a Holstein calf should be on a minimum of 6L a day (ideally 8L+), so if a calf is fed 4L of colostrum after calving, and another 2-4L 12 hours later, we would start calves the next day on a minimum of 3L CMR morning and night, and get volumes up to 4L ASAP. If you take too long increasing volumes, the calf’s gut can naturally limit its intake.

5) Wean gradually!! Over 2-3 weeks, depending on volumes of milk fed.

Less is more with prescription fertiliser

Reducing total nitrogen inputs on grassland, by as much as 15%, without impacting returns is possible. And producers can reduce emissions and improve sustainability.

Producers looking to reduce emissions and improve sustainability will be aware that nitrogen fertiliser is a significant factor but will be wary of reducing its use if yield and forage quality are to be maintained.
