Some Zimbabwean health workers are stranded in Ireland because the Zimbabwean government has stopped issuing clearance letters allowing them to work abroad. This comes as Zimbabwe's vice president and health minister Constantino Chiwenga said there were plans to criminalize the hiring of Zimbabwean nurses. In December 2021, he said there were plans to approach the UN to seek reparations for a brain drain in the health sector. Chiwenga claimed it cost around R6.3 million (600 000 euros) to train a doctor in Zimbabwe. Do you think this is a fair move?

South Africa's Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party leader, Julius Malema, today led a protest against Uganda's anti-homosexuality bill at the Ugandan High Commission in Pretoria. The Ugandan parliament recently passed a controversial anti-homosexuality bill, which makes homosexual acts punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Malema described Uganda's bill as modern-day oppression and an infringement of the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. "How are you going to identify that a person is gay? What scientific method are you going to use?" Malema asked. The bill is yet to be signed into law by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

Uganda's Anglican Archbishop, Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, says he is still stuck with prizes to be won by couples who wed while still virgins. State-owned New Vision website reports that the prize includes a "big sum of money" which has never been won. Archbishop Mugalu said he started the initiative to encourage women to enter marriage while still virgins. Kaziimba said the initiative was inspired by Mary the mother of Jesus who Christians believe was made pregnant miraculously by God while she was still a virgin. What do you think of this church initiative?

Lawmakers in Lesotho were to discuss on Wednesday whether the country should seek to reclaim large swathes of land from neighbour South Africa. A motion aims to have parliament declare South Africa's entire Free State province, which borders Lesotho, as well as areas of four more regions. The disputed regions where historically inhabited by the Basothos, a people from southern Africa's Bantu ethnic group, who represent a large majority in Lesotho. What do you think about this?

The International Criminal Court is seeking more state and non-state partners in its hunt for Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony. Dahirou Santana, the international cooperation adviser in the office of the ICC chief prosecutor says the court is seeking partners for logistics, information, personnel and anything else that would eventually lead to the arrest of rebel leaders accused of committing crimes against humanity. Kony, who has evaded arrest for more than 17 years, is the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army rebel group.

Is anyone stateless in your country? President William Ruto the decision to officially recognize the Pemba as an ethnic group in Kenya was taken after petitions by various parliamentary committees for recognition of the community were considered. Some 8,000 Pemba people, descendants of migrants from Zanzibar who live in the coastal counties of Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa and Lamu, have been stateless for decades. Kenya has in recent years recognized other stateless peoples including the Makonde and Shona.

What should the South African government do to protect migrants and stop xenophobia?Two Nigerians were allegedly shot dead in Johannesburg, South Africa, amid a resurgence of xenophobic attacks. According to The International Centre for Investigative Reporting, ICIR, one of the victims was a popular trader around Boulders Mall in Johannesburg and reportedly married to a Congolese woman. Recent reports of xenophobic violence and discrimination have continued to escalate in the country as migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers remain at risk of attacks and hate speech. Under the auspices of an anti-migrant group named "Operation Dudula," whose slogan is "Put South African First," a section of the country's citizens have united to force out immigrants who they claim are taking their jobs.

Nigeria's All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council has alleged that the main opposition party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has hired social media influencers to spread fake news against the ruling party’s flagbearer, Bola Tinubu. In a statement, the Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, said the fake news is meant to hoodwink gullible Nigerians. Reacting to the allegations, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the ruling party is scared of losing the forthcoming elections, stressing that the opposition party was unaware of the claims. Nigerian megastar Burna Boy has recorded another giant stride as his hit single Last Last has surpassed a million units in sales in the United States. Burna Boy's 'Last Last' is now eligible for an RIAA platinum plaque. Last Last' was released in 2022 as one of the lead singles off Burna Boy's 6th album 'Love, Damini'. The single quickly became an international smash hit as it spent multiple weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at NO. 44. This will be his second RIAA platinum plaque after his 2018 smash hit 'YE'. His platinum plaque sees him join CKay, Wizkid, and Tems as Nigerian artists with RIAA platinum plaques.

Hundreds of Tanzanians attended an emotional memorial ceremony on Friday for a student who was killed fighting for Russia in Ukraine after being recruited in jail. Nemes Tarimo, 37, died in October 2022 after agreeing to sign up with the Russian mercenary group Wagner. Tarimo had been in Moscow as a business informatics master’s student at the Russian Technological University. But he was then imprisoned some time after January 2021 for what were described as drugs-related offences. Last year, he was enticed with a deal: sign up with the Russian mercenary group Wagner and be pardoned or stay in prison.

Meanwhile, another Zambian student who was also recruited by Russia's mercenary Wagner Group last year while serving a nine-and-a-half year jail term for a drug offense and sent to fight in Ukraine was also killed. His death in September sparked a diplomatic spat, with Zambia demanding an urgent explanation from the Kremlin. What do you make of this?

Nigerian inmates in Ethiopia's Kaliti Maximum Security Prison have called on their government to facilitate their transfer to prisons in Nigeria. The inmates are seeking the chance to serve the remaining jail terms back at home The detainees say they suffer grave human rights abuses in prison. There are over 200 Nigerians in the Ethiopian prison facility, some of whom are still awaiting trial. Do you think Nigerians serving a jail term in Ethiopia should be repatriated back home to serve their sentences there, or should they remain in Ethiopia?

Foreign students in the United Kingdom may face deportation if they stay in the country longer than six months after the completion of their studies. Currently, international students can stay for two years after graduation. Home Secretary Suella Braverman has drawn up a plan to reform the graduate visa route. Under the proposal, foreign students would have to obtain a work visa by getting a skilled job or leave the UK after the end of their studies. The proposal is the latest in Braverman's plans to cut down migration in the UK.

The ruling junta in Burkina Faso has expelled the French army amid rising anti-France public sentiment and protests. French forces were given one month to leave, the junta said on Saturday., The move comes a few months afte France had to withdraw its troops from Mali. The French government provides military support in the region.
