Who’s starting the day with me on BBC Radio 3?

Listen out for Puccini’s Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums) performed by Brodsky Quartet, and Francisco Tárrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra performed by Julian Bream.

The latter features an extremely tricky tremolo technique! It’s so difficult!

I remember seeing Julian Bream playing guitar on TV as a child...and I just marvelled at the sounds he was able to make - he inspired me!

There’s lots more to enjoy - I hope you can join me. I’ll be live on BBC Radio 3 from 6:30-9am, then afterwards on BBC Sounds!

Ever wondered how a fireworks expert programmes the accompanying musical programme? Wonder no more!

I interviewed a Musical Fireworks Champion a couple of years ago for my Before The Bar Opens podcast.

I learned loads!

Trevor Whichello is a musical fireworks champion. He's an expert in programming music to sync perfectly with huge, high profile firework displays. The kind of displays that light up the sky with fizzing colour for miles around.

During the musical fireworks championship competition, over two tonnes of explosive material are used with the total weight of fireworks used in excess of 10 tonnes! Each show requires around 5 kilometres of wire to connect the electrical circuits and around 15 technicians working for over 12 hours to set up the display.

As a voice actor I record all sorts of projects for people all over the world: commercials, games, apps, corporate stuff, animation, toys, public transport systems...

Here's a link to my showreels - if you're 'voice curious' it'll give you an idea of the kind of work I do in my sound studio.

You’re in for a treat of a musical journey on BBC Radio 3 Breakfast this Saturday.

Join me as we enjoy…a piece Puccini wrote in a single night, a vocal version of a piece arranged for strings, and an enigmatic, meditative melody of 16 notes in 15 repetitions.

And plenty more!

I can’t wait to share it all with you on Saturday morning!

It's bloody cold here at Clarke Gables...warming the studio up with a combo of recording ads for a summer concert, and editing a piece of music about a balmy afternoon.

It’s 2045 and it's a late night for me on a Friday night. So I'm going to hit the hay in a moment ready to be up early doors for my Saturday breakfast show on BBC Radio 3, so do tune in. Honestly every Friday night feels like Christmas Eve because I'm so excited to wake up and do my show! 🎉

Had a great morning discussing two new, very different projects. One for kids and one that involves the development of a new tech app. They're a way off seeing the light of day but today progress has been made!

In other news, I've been asked to be in a new radio comedy series and I'm over the bloody moon. I'll be working with one of my all-time heroes! More info when I get it...

Started the day exploring Bluesky. I'm on there as .bsky.social if anyone's interested (long shot, I know...)

It's chilly in the studio this morning! Started early with some research into musical narrative - how can music tell a story...and how can sound be afforded meaning. Kinda fascinating... Next up, finishing a graphic score I've been working on....and then I'll be recording a corporate voiceover project for a Dutch client.

This morning I'm working on next week's Saturday breakfast show on Radio 3...then this afternoon I have academic supervision where I'll be talking about how a solo violin piece I've written relates to my voice work. Top fun! In between all that I have voiceover scripts to record. And my kitchen's a MESS.

Getting everything ready for my Saturday Breakfast show on BBC Radio 3 tomorrow! It's a bumper show - including...one of my favourite ever pieces of music, a Baroque masterpiece and one of the most incredible violin performances I think I've ever heard.

Tune in tomorrow 0630-0900, then afterwards on BBC Sounds

Right now I'm listening to Radio 3's Day of Dance. So much beautiful music and insights into dance and choreography...so in honour of that here's a pic of my son who's a ballet dancer.

I’m chuffed to bits to share that I’ve had the opportunity to be the voice of Katie Carrot in Aldi’s Christmas TV commercial this year!

As a voice actor, it’s always exciting to record festive campaigns but this one feels especially magical. This time, it's an action movie!

I was lucky enough to play the role in previous years so I was over the moon when I was asked to do it again.

The process of voicing an animated character is quite a journey.

Usually, you start with a script, sometimes you get to see a few character illustrations, and maybe you get some direction about personality, but the real work happens in the recording booth.

For this session we tried recording my lines in lots of different ways, trying many different subtle changes in the vocal direction.

Furtive, encouraging, scolding, weary, cheery…we tried it loads of ways.

Even a carrot has psychological motivation 🙂

Working with Aldi UK creative team was an absolute joy. Their vision for the campaign was clear from the start, and their passion for creating something both memorable and festive was contagious. We spent a long time fine-tuning every inflection, laugh, and word to ensure Katie’s character would shine through.

This Christmas campaign is all about bringing a bit of joy and lightheartedness to the season, and I couldn’t be happier to be part of it. I really hope you enjoy the commercial.

You can watch it here.
