Last year I was all over the country meeting friends old and new for adventures and it was awesome! But although I love a good , it can be such a faff, especially if the weather turns.

It was just great to get on the water today. and I have both had a lot going on this month and really needed a long(ish) hard paddle and time to talk stuff over and put the world to rights. Home now with a warm fire and a glass of wine feeling recharged and ready for the week ahead!

Merry Christmas everyone! What a great year it’s been… so many awesome SUP adventures 😃😁🥳🏄🏻 ...

Decided against a misty cold river SUP and headed to the top of the where the sun was shining and the hills emerged above a thick white duvet of cloud.

So this board was - unexpectedly - my favourite racing iSUP of the ones I tried.

I went on it straight after the Starboard airline 14 x 25.5 and found I felt much more stable and so able to paddle harder and faster.

That’s saying something as I’m probably a bit biased towards Starboard and I’m sure that must factor in to perception.

Seems I’m in good company though, as this SIC board came first in ‘s head to head race board test. Closely followed by the Starboard.

I should caveat all of this by reminding you and me that I’m a tourer not a racer so head down to Southampton, try some boards with and make your own mind up!

Enjoyed trying out this Starboard isup airline 14 x 25.5” yesterday race board demo day.

An iSUP is a must for me as I drive a TT and don’t have storage for a hard board.

From the middle tapering down to the nose on the Airline, it goes really narrow (much more than you can tell in this pic), so I like the side rails. You can really push the sides of your feet against them to balance, which just makes me feel more confident and comfortable… my normal board is a starboard 14 x 30 touring so this is much narrower.

This is probably the one I’d go for if I bought a race board, although I’m definitely a touring girl first and foremost, and for race boards there was another contender that surprised me…

Making the most of crisp sunny October mornings. This was our approach into Leamington on the river Leam on Saturday and it was glorious.

Do you pack your gear away ‘til spring or will you paddle through the colder months?

Anyone else feeling a bit low with the change of season?

Strength training is my absolute lifeline through the darker months.

And it’s made a huge difference to my paddle boarding… core strength, balance, resilience. Portaging my board is no problem these days!

I go to a small group personal training class first thing, 6am. It’s full on, you have to give 110% but it sets me up for the day.

I love how strong it makes me feel, not just physically but mentally and emotionally too.

Plus it’s super friendly so there’s loads of banter and I always come out smiling. Hot, sweaty, red faced…and happy!

Raindrops keep falling on my head. And dropping off my nose, apparently.

But paddling those insanely turquoise glacial lakes, surrounded by the Canadian Rocky Mountains… even in the mist and rain, I loved it!

If you know you know. 😍

And as the great Dolly Parton said, “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”

My life isn’t perfect… but it feels pretty technicolour most days. 🌈🥳

I was so lucky to get this paddle in when I went to the Canadian Rockies last week. It snowed in Banff a few days after I left, so hiking to this lake and staying warm on the water might have been a bit harder. The cloud and mist just added to the atmosphere!

Emerald lake in Yoho national park in the Canadian Rocky Mountains was still gleaming even on an overcast early morning. If you’d like to visit, it’s just over 1 hour’s drive past Banff town along the Trans Canadian highway, about 20 minutes after the turning for Lake Louise.

As we drew into Reading, day 5 came to an end and it had been both an education (really bringing home the desperate state of UK rivers) and a great day on the water with Nick from Gowiththeflo, an active supporter of and pacesetter (aka chaperone!) for the day.

We were so lucky with the weather, almost perfect conditions with warm but not hot sun, and only a gentle breeze. Just as good, as we were heading upstream against the flow.

Paddling the Thames through Berkshire has been on my list for ages as I lived in the area for about 8 years after uni.

It’s not too late to get involved in the relay, see the Planet Patrol website - link in bio.

Race for Rivers marks the launch of their nationwide water quality testing programme.

If you can’t join the relay then you can register your interest in testing water on your local river.

It will help fill knowledge gaps to further evidence a 74% reduction in water quality monitoring over the last ten years.

Planet Patrol needs our help, to gather the evidence and drive for action to protect our waterways before the damage is irreversible.

Despite appearances I’m not actually a hunchback 🙄😂. It’s just my tabard pulled over my PFD!

I’m really glad I got involved on day 5 of the relay by stand up paddle board for on the in Berkshire.

641 km - 100s of volunteers - 32 days - 8 cities.

😪 England’s rivers have the worst water quality in the UK and Northern Ireland.

Only 14% of England’s rivers meet ‘good’ environmental standards

😵 In 2019 dangerous pollutants in England’s rivers reached their highest levels since modern testing began.

😪 As a stand up paddleboarder and wild swimmer, I’m acutely aware of the issues and risks.

🤢 Instead of bathing in the wonders of nature on river paddles, I’m anxious about getting sick from the pollution.

is the world's first paddleboarding relay to monitor quality of England's rivers.

🤝 As part of the relay, I helped test and report the water quality every 5km along the route.

🤓 It was really interesting, and the test results - which were much higher than they should be - brought home the issue we are facing.

💙 needs volunteers like you and me to step up by regularly testing water quality on our local waterways and submitting the results via their easy-to-use app.

🙏 Can you, will you join in? https://planetpatrol.co/race-for-rivers/

Big thanks to from (the pace setter for Day 5) for making it a great experience!

Paddling under the Iron Bridge in the Ironbridge Gorge on the River Severn in Shropshire is something I’ve been wanting to do for ages.

It’s a beautiful area, a World Heritage site that’s widely regarded as being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

The bridge itself was built in 1779, the first of its kind to use cast iron, which could be produced cost effectively using new techniques.

Enough of the history lesson! But if you’re interested in finding out more or would be interested in widening your visit, it’s an site and you can visit the Iron bridge Gorge MuseumTrust .

If you’re planning to pass under the bridge by stand up paddle board, be aware the Jackfield rapids are about 1km down river of the gorge. If you’re experienced in 1-3 white water it’s great fun!

If not, then it’s possible to portage but it means clambering over rocks, so I recommend doing a recce so you know where to get out and don’t overshoot - as the rapids are immediately afterwards.

There are two car parks by the river. The all day car park costs a bit more but might be the better option, as we couldn’t get a signal down river to renew our parking in the 3-hour carpark.

We did a 10-mile paddle to Bridgnorth, parking in Severn Park which has an easy get in/out for the river.

You’ll need river fins and to be competent in grades 1-3 white water.

Craig SUP_Shropshire Adventure Guiding offers guided SUP tours and SUP river awareness sessions on this stretch and really knows his stuff, if you want to combine the trip with a course.

If you come paddling with me, just be aware you’ll probably end up in my posts 📸🤩.

One of the things I love about the UK stand up paddleboarding community is that it’s so small and friendly - we all pop up at the various SUP events and if we haven’t met already, we typically know of each other through Instagram or the various Facebook groups.

I tend to seek out Other SUPpers who are fairly nearby and/or who know stretches of water I haven’t paddled yet.

So it was great to paddle with on the Gloucester and Sharpness canal into Gloucester Docks, although he’s from Bristol so this was a midpoint and new to us both.

Hoping to check off the Avon under the Clifton suspension bridge too, as he’s planning a group trip sometime soon!

Anyone else from the Gloucester / Bristol / Bath area?

I’ve been wanting to paddle in Gloucester Docks for ages, so when a fellow SUPper suggested it last night I jumped at the chance.

We paddled up the Gloucester and Sharpness ship canal, it’s really wide as tall ships would sail up to the docks to discharge their cargo.

These days there’s an ever-changing miscellany of visiting narrow boats, smart motor cruisers and only the occasional yacht or tall ship - although we were the only moving craft on the water last night.

There was a buzz in the air, the sound of people enjoying this balmy Indian summer in the warehouse bars overlooking the docks.

We moored up beside a bar and climbed up a metal ladder, watched by a young hip crowd of 20-somethings next to us.

They seemed impressed with our mode of transport and invited us to join them, with lots of questions about our stand up paddle boards and buying us shots of firewater.

They were good fun and the shots definitely fuelled us up for the 4-mile paddle back to our start point!

I’m not sure what I would do if I lost this hat… you probably think it’s permanently glued to my head, since it seems to feature in most of my pics 🧢😅

It was handy last night though paddling from The Pilot at Hardwicke to Gloucester Docks and back. The sun was still really hot when I got on the water at 5.15pm.

We’re definitely having an Indian summer!

It’s been so long since I paddled on the sea, as I mostly SUP rivers, lakes and in the winter on the canals. So I realise that last weekend at the Great Big Paddle Parade was the first time in 18 months!

Talk about throwing myself into it, 20k is more than 12 miles. 😂

I don’t seem to do anything by halves these days, especially when it comes to stand up paddle boarding 🤩
