THE CELTIC SUPERNATURAL!!

The Celts believed that the supernatural pervaded their lives and surroundings. Magic and the observance of rituals dominated their lives, and consequently their magician caste – the Druids – held a position in society above even kings. The Druids’ role was critical, providing a link between the Celtic people and the supernatural world.

Yet the Druids kept no written record. Their rituals and observances were passed on orally. Roman and early church historians considered them too barbarous or heathenish to merit detailed examination.

We turn therefore to the archaeological record, where, from an abundance of Celtic sites, from Ireland to La Tène, our knowledge of their belief system continues to grow.

Before the Reformation, the desire to go on pilgrimage was almost universal; it was a part of life. For some it was simply an act of piety, whereas others wished to obtain healing. Few would have doubted that by visiting a saint’s shrine or holy place they would gain indulgences to offset against their sins, fast-tracking themselves into heaven when they died. The scallop shell – symbol of St James – became the recognised badge of pilgrims everywhere.

In this book Marilyn Parkes-Seddon recounts her experiences visiting twenty-two places of pilgrimage in Britain. Her journeys take her from the tiny cell where St Julian lived in self-imposed incarceration for forty years to the unexpected jewel of Samye Ling Buddhist monastery in Dumfries & Galloway and the awesome grandeur of Durham Cathedral.

Happy authors!

"The completed production has been done to my entire satisfaction. I might add that it far out does the fulfilment of my dreams. I did not expect my manuscript to be transformed into such a lovely book. I am indeed very pleased and I know it will give great pleasure to many readers. I shall most certainly place any future work in your hands, and I am so glad I had the opportunity of doing so this time."

Nigel Fairweather, a farmer’s son from Kingsbridge in Devon, decided on a career in medicine and went to Queen’s College, Dundee, which was then part of the University of St Andrews.

After qualifying in 1968 he worked in hospitals and then as a trainee General Practitioner. During a six-month job as a Casualty Officer at Falmouth Hospital in Cornwall he met Carol Woodcock, a Radiographer. They married in 1976 and after two posts as a salaried GP he became a partner at a Medical Centre in Northamptonshire. At the age of 54 he retired from GP work and moved to Brixham in Devon, fulfilling his ambition to return to the county of his birth.

There he became a Wedding Photographer, and likes to say that he then got his stress ‘only on Saturdays’. Actually he found this second career very rewarding and was a professional photographer for five years.

He is now retired and has written this book about his ‘Life of Two Halves’.

The Adventures of Neptune tells the story of Neptune, a mighty dolphin, who lives in the sea on the English Riviera on the south coast of Devon. The story tells of his adventures with his friends, Dolly and Devon, a dolphin mother and her calf, and the charismatic pirate Captain James Sylvester Pendragon of Penzance.

The tale also has a special guest: Miranda, the Princess of the Sea, who is a beautiful mermaid. In this adventure, Neptune has a brief encounter with another dolphin and the two seem to get on well. Could this be the beginnings of romance for our hero?

Propped up in a forgotten corner amongst old bookcases, hat-stands and an eighteenth-century sea trunk, there stands an Edwardian writing desk. Leaning against it is a wonky bar stool, on top of which sits a box labelled ‘Geest Bananas’ that is actually full of aging Christmas decorations. Within this writing desk – in the third drawer down on the left-hand side, as it goes – there lives a family of mice; they moved in just a couple of months ago after looking for somewhere to sleep during the day, and to run around at night.

Mice aren’t the only ones living in this old emporium, however. There’s Syd the big spider for instance, along with his friend Spiggy who sometimes lends a hand (or eight). And Bertie the bat hangs around upside-down in the rafters, keeping an eye on the day’s (or more often, night’s) activities.

I’m the only who knows this, of course. And when the doors close at night… well, the things I could tell you! Tales of a champion mouser, an all-out attack by crane flies, what happened on Bonfire Night, and even… spooky ghosts!

Oh, you want to hear more? Go on then.

So, where shall we start…? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0722351852

"It was always my ambition to get the book published. I am actually over the moon with it as they say, on cloud nine. Thank you very much for the artistry of the book, it is very cleverly illustrated. I would have no problem in mentioning your company to anybody who wished to go along the same road to their books being published."

Ratty is a sociable animal, an opportunist, and nosy by nature, but with wit and good fortune he can get out of predicaments by the skin of his teeth. The need to forage can lead him to some very precarious places and sometimes he wishes he’d stayed in bed.

Brenda Ronson’s delightful children’s story in rhyming verse is accompanied by beautiful illustrations throughout and is perfect for bedtime reading.

In this wonderful debut collection, Janet Wilkes takes us to both beautiful and hard places with her poems. Some evoke quotations from the Bible as she journeys from the Crucifixion to Christmas and from Creation to near death on the battlefield. There is no issue. There is no rallying for or against any cause. The tone throughout is simply one of hope and joy.
