RIP Tony McPhee. Photographed at the bar in DeMontford Hall (Leicester), just after Tony had finished his solo set as part of the Alvin lee/ Edgar Winter/Tony McPhee tour. Tony is holding my copy of a 60's sampler blues 'Gutbucket 2' which was the first disc I heard Tony play and sing. After asking "Where the f*** did you get that?", Tony kindly autographed the sleeve. I'll miss him.

After a wait of 3 years, we've been able to see live the Brighton-based band Bird In The Belly, performing last night in the beautiful Peak village of Youlgreave. The band gave an audience, largely of locals, plus Lyndy and myself, an excellent, professional and most enjoyable couple of sets of modern English folk. The in-between -songs chat was entertaining fun. The band were most approachable after: as you can from one of the photos.

The band whose album 'Neighbours & Sisters', we voted the best of 2020, are a must to see live. Gigs at Coventry cathedral this coming Thursday, Nuneaton in March and Horsham in early April... I think.

25/01/2023

Thanks to everybody who told me they liked the first Jeff Beck Special. I hope you like this selection, and tomorrow's show is the last concentration of Jeff Beck Music heard here for a while. I've found some music from his albums not played last time, plus a tune I've only come across this once. Guests with Jeff include Joss Stone, Imogen Heap, Nicolas Meier (who's solo albums have creating a stir over the last decade) and Seal. Otherwise you'll find Jeff guesting on albums by Cozy Powell (who's ''Tilt'' album included the tune 'The Loner', referencing Mr Beck), Stanley Clarke, Honeydrippers, Dion, Paul Rodger and (amazingly) Badger. Also three covers by Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert and Niacin.

A very happy new year to all my regular listeners and the less so regulars. This show was put together before the sad news that Jeff Beck died unexpectedly. So about to put a whole programme of his music for next week's show celebrating the pioneering playing of Mr Beck, who I managed to see live twice, once with the Truth line-up and the second time here at Loughborough as part of Beck Bogart & Appice (a memorable night, with Peter Bank's Flash as support).

However, tonight's music: a mix of new and old. Electronica from Steve Lacy, Neu!, Robeone. Experimental jazz from Lionel Loueke treated by Gilles Peterson, Frank Zappa and others. Snarky Puppy's Michael League in support of David Crosby; also Anglo folk from Coracle. And more....as writ here:

This is the last broadcast until at least the end of September and is largely a show of musicians' albums I've played and enjoyed over the last 9 months and/or got positive listener feed back. However, spot the new albums not played previously. One of which is the new Bubblemath LP 'Turf' Ascension'. I've enjoyed their other albums, as ones giving something pretty new in the field of progressive music. The kind folks at Cuneiform sent me an electronic preview copy several weeks ago, with the request not to air this publicly until the 20th of this month or later. The embargo is off although I've had several private sessions listening to the whole - marvellous. You can hear a track from it at the end of the show. Other prog tunes included are taken from other superior albums released in the last 12 months, include those by: Hats Off Gentlemen, Its Adequate (Malcolm Galloway at his very best) and Peter Hammill/Isildurs Bane. Jazz and fusion from Gary Husband & Alf Terje Hana (aka The Trackers), Mark Lockheart, Portico Quartet, Ogun Afrobeat, Markus Reuter and Pat Metheny. From the number of times I sampled Michael League's album 'So Many Me', meant it had to feature here. John in Ilkeston, the other day flagged up League's Snarky Puppy's new single on You Tube; the long version is a must. New SP album soon and they are appearing in London's Wembley Area in October. A variety of other sorts of rock from +1, Joe Bonamassa, Voka Gentle, Ann Wilson, (the chamber punk of) Lung. Enjoyable live folk by Steeleye Span (with their American audience lapping it up), Ian Hart and Bird In The Belly. And those not mentioned so far: Bob Marley, Erich Clapton, and last but not least more (new?) rearrangements of Vivaldi.

There is something common about 7 tracks being played this Thursday night, can you work out the link? Allsorts of jazzy fusion from Kazumi Watanbe, Trombone Shorty, Bruford, Earthworks, Brian Jackson, Jazzrausch Bigband, and I might even include the Chris Squire's tune. Progressive music from the RIO (Dave Kerman's 5 UUs), UK, Yes, James LeBrie, King Crimson, to the electronica (B.O.C.). Various other types of rock: Roy Harper, The Damned, Simon McBride, Bruce Hornsby, Brian Auger/Julie Driscoll, France Chang and Moogy Klingman. And mustn't forget the folk of Fellow Pynins, who are touring the UK this summer. That just about covers the variety, so join me at 9pm BST for just over 2 hours of interesting music.

Some years ago I felt compelled to create a list of violinists in popular music, after being told there were only a few. I stopped at list of about 200, and guess since I could add at least another 30: that list is buried somewhere in Prog Archives. So tonight I give you a show dedicated to violinists/fiddle players, 28 violinists in total across 25 tracks: blue grass to chamber rock, blues to jazz. Electric and acoustic violins, the Norwegian folk hardanger violin to the Indian double necked 10 string. Some obvious musicians, perhaps some unexpected and some definitely obscure - all worth checking out.

This is the last ALT2 Show before the Easter break but back again at the end of April. Don't forget there are separate streamable shows archived at the Album Zone, worthy of checking out.

And also for our N. American listeners: the UK has gone to British Standard Time, and we might be 4 hr ahead of EST and 8hr ahead of PST, unless you guys also put your clocks forward last weekend????

23/02/2022

A certain relative introduced me to the music of Imogen Heap two weeks ago, so I play some here - although there was a belated realisation that she had worked with Jeff Beck. Oh, Chris also reminded me of Roy Harper.
Elsewhere, jazz from Jon Hassell, The Triggering Myth (Scott McGill guesting), Dan Berkson. A continuation of dipping into Warren Zevon albums. Blues from Savoy Brown, Keef Hartley and Govt Mule. There is folk and garage. Join me at 9pm GMT tomorrow
