The Thinker by Rodin at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde

The Thinker by Auguste Rodin at Stockholm's Waldemarsudde public garden is an iconic piece of art. Commissioned by Prince Eugen, the Swedish prince and artist, in 1908, it now stands as one of the several casts of Rodin's famous sculpture scattered around the world. The statue's placement on the terrace of Prince Eugen's former residence reflects the Prince's personal vision for integrating art with nature, something he was deeply passionate about.

Waldemarsudde, once the home of Prince Eugen, has since been transformed into a museum showcasing his rich collection of art and sculptures. The surrounding park, free for public access, is a serene space where visitors can experience a variety of sculptures, many of which were carefully selected and purchased by Prince Eugen himself. His thoughtful approach to curating the park included integrating sculptures into specific locations where they could enhance the landscape.

The Views Of Ladugårdslandsviken Bay And Strandvägen Street

After spending the whole day walking around Djurgården, eventually we arrived at the Djurgårdsbron (The Djurgården Bridge) from where we could admire the whole of Ladugårdslandsviken. It's a bay of Saltsjön in central Stockholm. As it was almost sunset, we were graced with the golden view of the beautiful Swedish capital.

To the right we could see Strandvägen Street. Completed just in time for the Stockholm World's Fair 1897, it quickly became known as one of the most prestigious addresses in town.

After finding a local shop with some food, we grabbed our quick sandwich and placed ourselves on a bench watching the sun go down. It was another interesting day in this beautiful city.

Villa Mullberget, Djurgården, Stockholm

Villa Mullberget is a national romantic style villa located at 242 Djurgårdsvägen, on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm. Originally built in 1889 as Lilla Manilla by E. Lundroth, the villa underwent a significant transformation in 1909 under the guidance of architect Ragnar Östberg, known for his work on Stockholm City Hall.

The villa served as a summer residence for mayor Yngve Larsson and his wife Elin Bonnier, with interiors decorated by Filip Månsson and living room columns crafted by Elis of Taserud.

In 1925, further expansions were made following Östberg's design, and in 1962 the villa was further modified by Yngve's son, Mårten Larsson. The Larsson family lived there for seventy years, making Mullberget a place of historical and cultural significance.

The villa is surrounded by a charming natural environment and offers a splendid view of the entrance to Stockholm.

Today, Villa Mullberget is considered a particularly valuable building from a historical and cultural perspective, as recognized by the grönmärkning of the Stockholm City Museum.

The Views From Djurgården

Our second day in Stockholm was all about exploring The Royal Djurgården. As on the previous day, we got on the ferry from Lidingö Island and got off at Blockhusudden.

For centuries, Djurgården has been a beloved destination for recreation and entertainment. Nowhere in Stockholm will you find a higher concentration of popular attractions and museums.

Apart from the scenery of the Djurgården Island, we also enjoyed the views of the city across the water. On the right visible Elite Hotel Marina Tower.

Kvarnen Tre Kronor, Old Mill Building, Nacka, Stockholm

Kvarnen Tre Kronor is one of Stockholm’s architectural treasures with an intriguing cultural history and an ideal location between city and archipelago.

The Mill Three Crowns is a former mill industry at Kvarnholmen. The company that operated the business was formed in 1897. The mill was run in two 12-hour shifts, Monday-Saturday. In 1911 they switched from steam to electricity, and in 1912 they built a new silo warehouse and an office building.

The long story short, decision to close down came in 1990 and in 1992 the business was completely discontinued, with 370 employees losing their jobs.

Since 2007, a major urban development project has been underway aimed at transforming the mill's old industrial area into a district with housing, workplaces, schools and culture.

Several buildings also have q marking in the current detailed plans, this means that they must not be demolished or externally distorted.

Radisson Collection Strand Hotel, Stockholm

The Strand Hotel was built in 1912 in connection to the Olympic Games taking place in Stockholm - both the hotel and Stockholm's Stadion, the official sports arena, were built with similar brick and material in order to match. Following the Olympic theme, before the Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, the Olympic Fire also stayed in one of the corner suites enjoying the harbour view.

The hotel is built on the same place as the famous royal warship, Vasa, which sank on its maiden voyage 1628. The wreck was recovered in 1961 and is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Stockholm. On February 24th, 1912, the opening party was held and the most prestigious guest was the present king Gustav V.

The Strand Hotel has been managed by SAS International Hotels since 1986 and it became Radisson SAS Hotels & Resorts in 1994. Overlooking Stockholm's scenic waterways, the Strand Hotel is one of Stockholm's most recognized landmarks today.

The hotel has 152 rooms, where around 60 of them have a sea-view and 20 are suites. The most famous suite is the Tower Suite, which is located on two floors in the tower. The suite offers a spectacular view of Stockholm and a large terrace where the guests can enjoy their breakfast or a glass of champagne, with the whole Stockholm at their feet.

International classical stars, such as Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman, as well as modern celebrities like Mariah Carey, Rod Stewart, Pavarotti, Will Smith, Elton John, have all stayed at The Strand and highly enjoyed the genuine atmosphere and personal service. Greta Garbo spent her last night ever in Sweden - and on earth - at The Strand.

Drottninggatan Street, Stockholm, Sweden

This street normally is associated with shopping. Most of the street is a walking street without traffic, and often you can spot local music artists or entertainers presenting a street show in the summer.

The street was laid out in the 1630s and 1640s when the surrounding area was built on a rectilinear grid plan, a significant innovation in Stockholm's urban environment.

Mariahissen Building on Södermalm, Stockholm, Sweden

The building Mariahissen (which means the Maria elevator) housed a public elevator to carry passengers 28 meters (92 ft) from the waterfront up to the neighborhood above.

It resembles a Gothic church, with spires and brick arches, and stands alongside rock cliffs with hilltop buildings above it. Completed in 1886, it typifies the ornamental and historically inspired architecture of the Belle Epoque.

The public elevator service stopped in the 1930s and after a brief moment of serving as a concert venue in the 1970s, Mariahissen now contains offices.

The other visible building up on the hill is Laurinska House.

The picture has been taken from Tyska Brinken (The German Slope), a street in Gamla Stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. The street name refers to the proximity of the German Church, and the German parish.

The German influence in Stockholm was considerable during the Middle Ages - half of both the population and the members of the City Council were German; the Hanseatic League dominated trade; the wealthiest burghers were Germans; and the German language and culture was present everywhere.

Sunset On Riddarholmen Island, Stockholm, Sweden

After a whole day exploring Gamla Stan we headed to the small island of Riddarholmen to enjoy the scenic views of the sunset.

Riddarholmen island is often referred to as "The island of the Noble" or "Knight`s island". The main landmark is the church Riddarholmskyrkan, used as Sweden's royal burial church from the 17th century to 1950, and where a number of earlier Swedish monarchs also lie buried.

The View Of Södermalm From Riddarholmen

Södermalm, a district in central Stockholm, has a rich history rooted in its working-class beginnings in the early 20th century. Once regarded as the "slum" area of Stockholm, it faced economic challenges and social issues as it developed. However, in recent decades, Södermalm has transformed dramatically and is now celebrated as a vibrant hub of bohemian and alternative culture.

The area is known for its eclectic atmosphere, featuring stylish boutiques, cozy cafes, and a diverse range of cultural amenities, including theaters, art galleries, and music venues. Today, Södermalm attracts visitors looking for a dynamic urban experience infused with creativity and history.

Södermalm is home to several key attractions that showcase its vibrant culture and history:

Monteliusvägen: This picturesque walking path offers stunning views of Stockholm’s skyline, particularly at sunrise and sunset, making it a favorite spot for both locals and visitors.

Södermalm's Vintage Shops: The area is known for its unique vintage shops and second-hand stores, perfect for those looking for one-of-a-kind fashion and antiques.

Fotografiska: An acclaimed contemporary photography museum, Fotografiska often features impressive exhibitions from both established and emerging photographers. The museum also has a café with great views.

SoFo: Short for "South of Folkungagatan," this trendy neighborhood is filled with boutiques, cafes, and bars, reflecting Södermalm's creative spirit.

Skinnargatan: A charming street lined with historical buildings, offering a glimpse of Södermalm's past, as well as shops and eateries.

Tantolunden Park: A beautiful park by the waterfront, popular for picnics, outdoor activities, and a beach area during the summer months.

These attractions, along with the district's lively arts scene and stunning waterfront, make Södermalm a must-visit destination in Stockholm.

Köpmanbrinken (Merchant's Slope), Stockholm

Merchant's Slope (Köpmanbrinken) is a historic street located in Stockholm's Old Town - Gamla Stan. This street is unique as it consists of two distinct slopes that were unified under the current name in 1885, following the creation of Merchant's Square (Köpmantorget) which separates them.

The northern slope was referred to as Fiskestrandsbrinken ("Fishing Shore Slope") during the Middle Ages, because the area east of the slopes, used to be the city's main fish market Fiskaretorget until 1520.

Alley of Mårten Trotzig, Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm's old town, Gamla Stan, is an incredible maze of narrow cobbled streets and beautiful colourful houses.

Some of the old streets of The Old Town are so narrow that two people cannot walk shoulder to shoulder without touching each other. And the most narrow of all is Mårten Trotzigs Gränd - Alley of Mårten Trotzig.

This super narrow alley connects the two main roads, it has 37 steps and is only 90 cm wide.

The alley is named after Mårten Trotzig, an influential German merchant, who immigrated to Stockholm in 1581. He dealt in iron and later copper, by 1595 he had sworn his burgher oath, and was later to become one of the richest merchants in Stockholm and bought properties in the alley in 1597 and 1599, also opening a shop there. He was however beaten to death during a trip to Kopparberg in 1617.

The alley was closed off in the mid-19th century, not to be reopened until 1945. Its present name was officially sanctioned by the city in 1949.

Today the alley is an immensely popular tourist attraction, a must-see spot during the tour of the Old Town.

Kindstugatan Street, Stockholm, Sweden

Kindstugatan is a street in the bustling, compact island of Gamla Stan, the old town in central Stockholm, with cobbled streets and colorful 17th- and 18th-century buildings.

While the origin of this name is not known, it most likely refers to either a single renowned fight or notorious fights giving the area a reputation. Medieval sources record that curious and striking nicknames were far from unusual, and it’s possible the street was named after a mansion owned by a man with this name.

In the rose-colour building at Number 14 was the tavern Fimmelstången (The Thill, e.g. the wagon shaft) where the poet Lasse Lucidor (1638–1674) was stabbed to death. At about 2 am following a boozing evening a night in August, a quarrel between the poet and a Lieutenant Arvid Christian Storm degenerated into a sword duel which ended in the death of the poet.

Sunrise At Cape Kolka, Latvia

Cape Kolka is the most pronounced horn on the shores of Latvia, and it is where the waves from two seas clash – the open Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. During the bird migration season, dozens of thousands of birds fly over the cape, and this is the best place to start a visit to Slitere National Park.

Come spring, Cape Kolka is an ideal place to watch migratory birds. In the summer, it is a paradise on earth for those who love vacations on the beach, while in the autumn and winter it is a fine place to witness the greatness of nature.

Cape Kolka is the Northernmost point of the Kurzeme (Courland) peninsula. Its ancient name Domesnes was first mentioned on the Mervalla Rune Stone in Sweden around 1040. The shelf of Cape Kolka stretches into the sea for 6 km and it is bathed by the sea at a depth of 0,5-3 km. The waves of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga meet on its shelf. During storms waves can reach a height of 7 m. This place is also known as a unique bird watching site, for the cape is crossed by the Baltic Sea – the White Sea birds’ migration route.
