Henry Grace’s album ‘Alive in America’ is out today. Pour out some nice booze, get it on the Big Speakers and you’ll slide into the weekend a better person than you were this morning.

It’s a fabulous album full of music you never knew you wanted to hear. Henry put it all into to this and it shows.
Very nice indeed.

Tune your toms! This is so worth it especially if there’s a tom heavy drum pattern in the track. Your toms (particularly the higher ones) will produce an audible tone/note. It’s well worth a bit of time tweaking them to get it resonating with the other instruments in your arrangement. You can just use a clip-on chromatic guitar tuner or, if you trust them, use your ears. You won’t always be able to tune the drum to the root note of your song but using something neutral, like a fifth, is cool too. An excellent technique for getting toms that make you feel nice.

Ever wondered how we get the best bass sound in town? Well here’s the skinny. Our vintage 1963 Simms Watts 100w valve amp combined with high quality new(ish) Orange OBC cabs. Vintage drivers generally don’t give you much welly and modern amps can sound well... a bit shiny. 22 years as a professional bass player and music producer has lead us to this combination. Live and in the studio this is the way. Chuck in a 1977 Fender P-Bass and it’s a sound that’s impossible to top (IMO) A lot of people don’t realise how distorted recorded bass sounds can or should be without them ever actually sounding fuzzy. By using a T-Rex Bass Juice set on low you can rough up the bass tone to make it warm, present and thick to support the arrangement and give you that comfy feeling. So much of the mixes here at www.GhostTownSound.Studio are tied up in this approach. The secret weapon to our ace bass tone is our Amek BCII mixing console - just using the channel strips alone gives a beautiful bit of grit to give the bass part clarity. We normally use one DI signal straight through the desk and take a second from the cab... we use a Beyer M88 as our bass mic most of the time but never underestimate the humble SM57 to capture that all important top end to your bass tone! Also don’t forget to check your phase or your bass tone cold end up thinner than spaghetti. Above all the part you write has to be great and it should be played well - there’s just no substitute for this. Remember ‘when it comes to bass, space is the place... maaan.”

The Swagger have realised ‘Loaded Gun.’

It’s always top darts working with these guys. Their sound is a real mish mash of a loads of classic influences from the last 40 years or so but they’re very much their own thing. Good songs, good musicians and they do it all with a refreshing conviction.

A splendid afternoon at Fluid Mastering yesterday putting the final touches to Nick Hart’s new EP. Tim Debney is a fabulous mastering engineer who has a wealth of knowledge, the ears of a bat and speakers so good they’ll quite literally put your nan’s Alba to shame.
Can’t wait for you to hear Nick’s record... it’s taken a while but we’ve done it properly. A real labour of love... music for those with a bit of patience who know it could be worth the investment to find a record they’ll enjoy for years. Sound like you? This may well be that record. Out soon.
