Newham Council has proposed a series of drastic cost-cutting measures and is seeking emergency government funding as its rising homelessness costs push it to the verge of bankruptcy. Among the proposed cuts are the cancellation of Christmas and Eid lights to save £200,000, ending free tea and coffee for staff, and banning internal catering, such as biscuits, during meetings.

The council plans to raise most fees and charges, excluding parking and commercial rents, by 20%. It may also scale back its Council Tax Reduction Scheme, which currently reduces payments for low-income residents, as it looks to save £20.3 million at an upcoming meeting.

Additional measures include consulting on the sale of its Dockside offices near London City Airport and selling off other assets like the Debden House conference centre in Essex. The council is also considering cutting the maintenance of its bowling greens to save £24,000 annually and scaling back fitness programs for the elderly.
