The first ten issues: in 1998, TANK was born as a palm-sized magazine on a kitchen table in North London. Created as an independent magazine that combined fashion with wider culture, TANK grew into a particular and importantly always unstable alchemy of politics, art, literature, and the things that fall in between. In a period where politics became a branch of the entertainment industry, TANK set out to develop a critical stance on art and its expression. As Walter Benjamin said, “All efforts to render politics aesthetic culminate in one thing: war.”

Congratulations to on winning silver in in Paris today
From our issue 94 last year in :
“Caden Cunningham embodies the five tenets of taekwondo: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. From a small town in West Yorkshire, the 19-year-old turned professional just before finishing high school and has been competing internationally in the Korean martial art ever since. “Whether in training or competition, you get to really express what you feel through taekwondo,” he says. “If you’ve had a bad morning you can go and let all your stress out” – an approach he hopes will lead him to Olympic gold in Paris next year.”

In 2022, Kazna Asker became the first MA student to put the hijab on the runway of Central St Martin’s. The young designer was invited to exhibit her work in dialogue alongside the late, great Hamid Zenati at Nottingham Contemporary.
Rooted in solidarity and creative expression, Hamid and Kazna’s work is testament to the intuitive spirit of making, upcycling and re-imagining everyday material into works of art.

Now Open: Come As You Really Are by Hetain Patel. In the latest exhibition organised by Artangel, Hetain Patel presents a variety of hobbies that showcase an individual’s freedom of expression and ingenuity, and in doing so broadens our perception of who gets to be called creative and where the impulse to create stems from.

At the heart of this project is a nationwide community of people whose labours of love are a lens through which the artist is creating an alternative portrait of the UK.

Jeremy Corbyn is a politician of substance, whose profound understanding of political theory and process is matched only by the depth of his convictions. In 2023, TANK spoke to him about the history and contemporary reality of the education system in the UK in a wide-ranging conversation that addressed the last 14 years of Tory neglect. Congratulations Jeremy.

‘I, to an extent, am writing about myself. I am writing about Black people in London. I am writing about Nigerians. But the “I” is replaced with “Adam”. And so this boy, this figure comes to represent everything in the same way that in Biblical terms, Adam comes to represent man.’ Gboyega Odubanjo . Today Faber releases Adam, the first full-length collection from the poet Gboyega Odubanjo. For the Summer reader issue TANK published two exclusive poems from the book.
