That was too close for comfort!

In 1918, guns and mortars use 'bracketing fire ' (ie fire that is 'walked' onto a target by over or undershooting) . Once you have your guns zeroed, you can consistently let the enemy have it (unless they run away to seek cover of course!)

Heavily armed stormtroops advance through a trench, machine guns at the ready.

In WW1 LMGs are new technology and they are far from the refined weapons of WW2. In 1918, rather than be generic, each LMG has a unique profile that represents its particular design. For example, the German MG08/15 can make more attacks than other LMGs (it is essentially a shrunk Maxim) but has poor mobility and ability to engage targets of opportunity through reactive fire.

Artillery comes in lots of different formats in 1918. At the smallest level, weapons like rifle grenades and mortars can provide infantry with the means to advance on positions, whilst field guns provide local, targeted support for fortifications and armour. Finally, utilising massive bombardments can be used to lay a carpet of surpression to keep your troops safe as you advance, or hold up an incoming offensive.

“A deep chug-chugging. Out of the smoke giant shapes dramatically loomed up, lurching along like ungainly prehistoric monsters. They were tanks. I remember cheering, which was rather a waste of precious breath. They clattered past, and we followed a respectful distance behind them. One of them swivelled awkwardly towards where the sparks of the machine gun revealed the position of the post, and churned right over it.”

What is 1918?

Set in that final year of the First World War, 1918 is a wargame where you command a platoon of 28mm model soldiers to fight battles and break the deadlock.

Commanding sections of infantry, you will have at your disposal artillery, aircraft and tanks, alongside all the innovations those longs years of war have brought to ultimately find victory on the frontlines.

Using platoons drawn from authentic wartime documents and military records, players can use special cards unique to their doctrines - Grand Offensive, Lightning Assault or Tactical Defense - and unique unit types, from German Stormtroopers to the Harlem Hellfighters to secure territory and victory.

1918 is coming very soon. And as the game develops, we will continue to share pictures and gameplay.
