Kai Li's TABOM project

Kai Li's TABOM project I've been fascinated with my family connection to the Tabom settlers in Ghana and the idea of travelling to Brazil.

In 2009 this became a reality when I visited Sao Paulo, Rio and of course Salvador... The plan is to return to further my research..

Hi friends I hope you've been keeping well despite the current pandemic. Yesterday was Africa Day, and it was such a pleasure to be included in this list of innovative Africans, curated Paulo Rogério Nunes based in Salvador, Brazil!

I'll be updating you on future projects relating to my Tabom project in the near future (COVID19 will not steal my 2020!)

Africa Day is an annual commemoration of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU, now known as the African Union) founded on the 25th May 1963.

Luiza Mahin
Afro-Brazilian freedom fighter

Born at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Mahin was natural leader. She became involved in revolts and uprisings of slaves in the Brazilian province of Bahia. She was a street vendor by profession but she used her business as a distributory cell for messages and leaflets in the resistance struggle. She played a central role in the significant “Revolta dos Males” (1835) and “Sabina” (1837-1838) slave rebellions.

I've arrived - our Tabom ancestral home! I've shared a bit of that journey in my latest blog post. Feel free to share! Axé!

I'm also accepting commissions for written or video content whilst in Brazil. If you know any editors that might be interested in my Tabom research or general info about blackness/African heritage in Brazil, please reach out to me [email protected]

Obrigada!

Finally got round to visiting the AfroBrazilian museum Museu Afro Brasil in São Paulo yesterday..
I remember my first visit 5yrs ago during a research trip on my heritage, feeling slightly frustrated that there wasn't any information on a community close to 200yrs old... I did however learn a lot about their more researched cousins, the who were Afrobrazilian returnees to .

So I don't think it's a coincidence that the lives of some prominent Taboms in Accra and Agudas in Lagos in the mid to late 1800s/early 1900s were almost parallel - a middle class lifestyle which afforded them the privilege to study and work within the British Empire.

I have some blog posts I wrote on this subject in 2013 on www.travelmakerkai.wordpress.com and I'll be sharing more on my findings/self enlightenment later this month!

Thank you for the continued support!

Just submitted my pitch for this... Hopefully it's just what I need to revive my Tabom research again!

Benin was a hub of the slave trade. But many people want to forget their families’ role.

"Tabom In Bahia" film screening at the Institute of Latin American Studies which I was invited to speak on the panel, to share my own "Tabom in Bahia" experience during my trip to Brazil 2012/13! Great documentary - I was truly moved! I'm reminded there's more than one way to tell a story, so I will persevere with securing funding towards making my own Tabom film!

I'm excited to be invited to speak on the panel of the screening of "Tabom In Bahia" on the 2nd November in London. If you're in town please to join us (see poster for details)! I'll be sharing a review after the event date ✨
Last weekend I has the pleasure to meeting Prof Juan Diego Diaz who kindly presented me with a copy of the DVD "Tabom in Bahia" with an encouraging note to continue exploring my Brazilian roots.
During my time in Brazil, I did a bit of research tracing my heritage. I didn't discover much more than I already knew about the group of African slaves from Brazil who returned to West Africa (the ones who went to Ghana were called Tabom, and those to Nigeria and Benin called Aguda), however I do remember what a spiritual journey it was to be in the land my ancestors left. I was myself a once... And I hope to return again!
