Swedish sculptor Cajsa von Zeipel transforms the language of consumption into survival aesthetics, reimagining the maternal body as a site of resilience & invention.

In many ways, we seem to be living through an apocalypse, writes Beyond Noise Art Editor-at-Large Magnus Edensvard. Everything feels imbued with looming chaos. Looking back, we have always created images and stories shaped by our perceptions of the world around us. If that is the scene being set, then pressing questions about our individual and collective survival inevitably emerge. Cajsa von Zeipel’s practice has long engaged with these themes through sculptures and installations. Her figures are enigmatically cast into precarious roles. One such work, Formula X (2021), is on display in Apocalypse: From Doomsday to Climate Threat at the Gothenburg Museum of Art.

For Beyond Noise Issue 4, Magnus spoke with Cajsa and Gothenburg Museum of Art, curator Eva Nygårds on her work and practise.

German photographer Candida Höfer is known for her meticulously composed work exploring public spaces and architecture. Issue 4’s standalone supplement sees explore the quiet grandeur of zoological spaces and interiors of public and cultural institutions, offering glimpses behind the scenes-quiet back-of-house corridors, staging areas and architectural details that reveal the unseen qualities of spaces designed to host art and performance.

To accompany her images, her partner, studio manager and longtime friend, Herbert Burkert, reflects on the tension between curiosity and restraint that defines her work.

With each issue, Beyond Noise publishes a collectible supplement between the volumes of Beyond and Noise featuring the work of an acclaimed artist. For this issue, renowned photographer Candida Höfer joins previous supplement guests Juergen Teller, Dinos Chapman, and David Sims.

Few performers inspire the same mixture of fascination and unease as Charlotte Rampling. For decades, critics and audiences alike have reached for words to pin her down, but none seem to suffice.
