Residing within the grandeur of École des Beaux-Arts, Seán McGirr’s McQueen SS25 show was a spectacle that played on stark contrasts.
The show space, which featured an installation by Tom Scutt, juxtaposed the traditions with a steel-plate path sunken beneath broken tiles. As for the clothes, and wider show concept, this season reflected upon Lee Alexander McQueen’s FW94 collection, “Banshee.” It was this sophomore show that set the tone for the rest of Lee McQueen’s work, and similarly, McGirr’s second collection has done the same.
Creative Director #SeánMcGirr notes: “The banshee is rooted in the history of #McQueen, but it’s also a story that I grew up with, so [it] feels deeply personal to me - something I remember my mother talking about in Ireland, describing the cry of this solitary, foreboding figure. For me, she has come to represent something real and potent now. The idea of someone who is feeling and forthright; someone who can be seen as a guiding force.”
That “guiding force” was explored through tailoring that challenged sartorial traditions, while the lore of the banshee went on to dictate elsewhere. Distressed and frayed georgette, embroidered with silver bullion, not only contoured, but offered something familiar — a deep-rooted subverted McQueen fantasy.
It was darkly romantic: from the chain dress finale piece that became engulfed in smoke, to sharp, architectural tailoring, or earrings modelled on teeth and heavy gold-rivet bullet-esque blazers layered atop feather-clad cocktail dresses, McGirr’s collection for McQueen was emblazoned by House codes.
