The album Journey To Nabta Playa from and is rooted in a shared inquiry into the ancient astrological stone circle of Nabta Playa in Nubia, dating to 8th millenium BCE.

Nabta Playa - the worldโ€™s oldest astronomical site - connects the rise of Sirius and Orion with knowledge from the ancient Nile valley, demonstrating how African science and knowledge flowed northwards long before the pyramids were built. As Dr. notes, Nabta Playa rewrites the narrative of where human civilisation truly began, defying Eurocentric notions that deprive Sub-Saharan Africa of its history.

โ€œThe site symbolises being in tune with nature,โ€ explains Naima Nefertari. โ€œItโ€™s about a holistic way of understanding we are part of a much bigger existence: where stars [like Sirius] are connected to when a plant might bloom, when water flows and human beings feel the need to have gatherings. Itโ€™s about balance.โ€

However, Nabta Playa is under threat from a canal project endangering its landscape and legacy. โ€œThe fate of this ancient site is precariously un-balanced,โ€ writes Angel Bat Dawid, prompting urgent conversations around heritage preservation.

This Saturday, Worlds Alive and invite you to A Celebration of Divine Inspiration, Joy and Transformation in honor of John Coltraneโ€™s musical gift to the world of โ€˜A Love Supremeโ€™ - his deeply powerful and adventurous declaration of spiritual gratitude, devotion and expression, which continues to resonate across generations and genres to this day.

Taking place at in LA, the event features performances from and the Chosen Few and , along with an opening invocation by our own and the incredible voice of Dwight Trible in a moving tribute to Coltraneโ€™s extraordinary gift to the world.

A Love Supreme, the epitome of spiritual jazz, is one of the most honest and historic musical offerings. Few recordings have garnered as much universal praise and reverence, beloved by artists as musically diverse as Flea, Patti Smith, Kamasi Washington, Four Tet, to Henry Rollins, Carlos Santana and our very own Kahil Elโ€™Zabar.

If every milestone album has a journey attached to it, Journey To Nabta Playaโ€™s began in Sweden. Blending the sacred and the experimental, and recorded the album between Chicago and Southern Sweden, at the family home of Don and Moki Cherry - drawing deep from the well of community, lineage, and spiritual practice.ย 

It was here that Naima Nefertarti and Angel Bat Dawid surrounded themselves with โ€œvintage books on the blues and history, candles, Egyptian busts, and myriad instruments, many belonging to Naimaโ€™s grandfather, the late Don Cherry...they sketched out their fantasies on the schoolhouse blackboard and the family piano. Beautifully painted by Naimaโ€™s grandmother.โ€

The location of this recording channels Don and Moki Cherryโ€™s unique spirits and unwavering dedication to intercultural connectedness. The refuge of this space enabled the undaunted creative expression present on the album.

โ€œIt needed to happen there,โ€ says about the album creation, โ€œin that big room that has harnessed and carried our family and so many of our people with its powerful creative energy over time.โ€

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of the incomparable Sun Ra on his solar return day, whose vast output of innovative jazz shifted music forever.

Sun Ra remains an immense presence within the world of spiritual jazz - named after Ra, the ancient Egyptian sun god, Sun Ra infused African localities into both his music & the Thmei broadsheets he composed with Alton Abraham, pulling from book culture on Chicagoโ€™s South Side and the works of historians such as Constantin- Franรงois Volney and J. A. Rogers. Nubia, a region in Northeast Africa and the location of the ancient site of Nabta Playa, was also a significant part of his worldview, representing ancient African civilization & culture.

Emily Pothast, writing for The Wire, sees Journey To Nabta Playa as part of โ€œthe same African-American spiritual tradition that fed the likes of Sun Ra and the Coltranes & which continues to spring up in places like Chicago.โ€

Just as Ra and his Arkestra would incorporate instruments creatively, such as the inclusion of Pat Patrickโ€™s โ€œspace lute,โ€ to craft this image of Nubia, Angel Bat David and Naima Nefertari also invented their own sounds when making Journey To Nabta Playa, the Winds of Jupiter and Winds of Saturn, merging them with acoustic instrumentation.

Gail Tasker of Jazzwise explains: โ€œThe result is along the lines of Sun Raโ€™s work, both alien and earthly, with a liberating, spiritual undertone, transporting the listener through the cosmos.โ€

A Black American composer, improviser, clarinetist, pianist, vocalist, educator and DJ, she was recently featured in โ€˜Pitchforkโ€™s 25 Nextโ€™: spotlighting the next generation of artists shaping the future of musicโ€™.

๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฎ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ is an accomplished multi-disciplinary artist, musician and composer, known for her work in sonic and visual forms to explore interrelationships of language, image, symbol and sound. A beautiful tribute to his spiritual mentor, โ€œTuriyasangitananda Eternal Pranamsโ€ is โ€™s heartfelt ode to Swamini Turiyasangitananda, known to many as Alice Coltrane. Reflecting on the title in an interview with for , Surya shared:

โ€œItโ€™s saying we eternally give salutations and obeisances to Turiyasangitanandaโ€ฆ I really enjoyed watching her television program, Eternityโ€™s Pillar. Thatโ€™s where โ€˜eternalโ€™ comes fromโ€”I didnโ€™t want to use the title directly, but that word, that concept, it carries so much. My soul is eternally joyous to have just shared one conversation, one moment with her. The song came last, but the message is simple: thank you, and may we carry the torch of her eternal vision in whatever way we can.โ€

The track is produced by the prolific Carlos Niรฑo whose unique vision is a pivotal point for contemporary progressive jazz music. It is a gentle yet powerful offering of gratitude, devotion, and continuation.
