Visionary Chicago legend & tenor sax colossus share an extraordinary spiritual connection, built on 4 decades of exceptional explorations in the varied realms of spiritual jazz. They continue their quest of spirit and true musical freedom through the fluidity of their communication. ๐Ÿ’Ž

Theyโ€™re celebrating their long term friendship with this tour since the two giants have been exchanging spiritual energy for more than 40 years. โ€œWe met on a basketball court in 1975, and it was just a real good vibration,โ€ Elโ€™Zabar recalls. โ€œFrom the first time we met, we were able to play together on the same team. We had the ability to see each otherโ€™s spaces.โ€

The Chicago legend explains how their shared history informs their musical rapport โ€œin practising and being ready for the telepathy, because in the moment, we donโ€™t know exactly whatโ€™s going to happenโ€.

Their duo performances are pure expression of musical mastery in its highest form, a not-to-be-missed opportunity to witness this incredible experience!๐Ÿ’Ž

And itโ€™s a special one, as celebrates itsโ€™ 40th Bandcamp Friday, and the last one for the next few months before they recommence in September!

Bandcamp Fridays began in March of 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the shuttering of venues led to a loss of vital tour revenue for artists. Bandcamp Fridaysโ€”on which Bandcamp waives its revenue share and passes the funds directly to artists & labels!

Huge props to Bandcamp for being one of the champions of independent music and one of the conduits for supporting the flourishing of a wide diversity of sound. ๐Ÿค

The album is a journey in sound and sisterhood rooted in the artistsโ€™ historical research of an ancient stone circle in Nabta Playa, a deeply sacred astrological and ceremonial site in the remote deserts of southern Egypt.

Recorded between Angelโ€™s home city of Chicago and at Naimaโ€™s family home in Sweden, the album came to be after a series of alignments between the artists in music, learning and guidance from valued elders in their musical communities.

Both artists need no introduction - is a highly acclaimed Black American composer, improviser, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and educator who is fearlessly โ€œshaping the future of musicโ€ (as championed by Pitchfork). (aka Karlsson) is an interdisciplinary artist, musician and composer fromย London, led by interests in improvisation and the relationships between language, image, symbol and sound - combined with her ongoingย work with the archives of her grandparents Moki & Don Cherry.ย

Five years ago on Record Store Day in April 2019, we released this ultra-rare private press spiritual jazz holy grail, Abdullah Samiโ€™s Peace of Time.๐Ÿ’ŽThis masterpiece from New Yorkโ€™s โ€˜70s underground Loft Jazz scene has acquired mythical status by now. Originally released in 1978 by the artist himself in just 300 copies, โ€˜Peace of Timeโ€™ and the story of Abdullah Mudon Sami is the true stuff of legend!

Peace of Time is hailed as a true gem of the NY Loft Jazz scene, โ€œa fiercely independent US scene defined by its radical politics, artist-run labels, and blisteringly creative โ€“ not to mention hugely collectable โ€“ recordsโ€, eloquently put by Paul Bowler in a special feature for Record Collector. The proof is the 1977 flyer of Abdullah Samiโ€™s Peace of Time live performance in NYC featuring legendary loft jazz musicians Bill Bang, William Parker and Earl Freeman to name a few!
ย
Thereโ€™s a touching story behind this album and how it was re-released and finally got the recognition it deserves! It even restored Abdullah Samiโ€™s passion for his sax, leading him to revisit his spiritual jazz sounds from the late โ€˜70s and further explore new artistic avenues.

So thereโ€™s more to follow in this wonderful story illustrating the incredible power of music! Thanks to everyone who supported it, weโ€™re honoured to be its conduit. ๐Ÿ’Ž

Because now, more than ever in this world, we need Peace of Time ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

โ€œThe inspiration came from Gjon Miliโ€™s 1949 images of Picasso painting in light in a ceramics studio. After all, Elโ€™Zabarโ€™s unapologetic stance as a freestanding artist isnโ€™t a million miles from Pablo, both blazing iconoclastic trailsโ€, states Michael Jackson.

โ€œThe Ethnics are not esoteric with a studied
kind of audience connection,โ€ says Kahil Elโ€™Zabar. โ€œWithin our uniquely limited instrumentation, we can get people loud and excited, hold them into a feeling of dance, access entertaining aspects of joy in a performance.โ€

EHE collaborators bear witness to this unique form of experience and expression: โ€œThe thing that struck me with Kahil and the cats,โ€ Ali says, โ€œis the energy and intentionality behind everything. Itโ€™s something that drew me to free playing/improvised music, but I rarely experience in jazz generally.โ€œ

โ€œOver the past five decades, Kahil eschewed the traditional jazz ensemble in favor of groups comprising mainly percussion, horns, and reeds. The result was a distinctive sound he honed, โ€”a sound that is equally harmonic and melodic as it is layered with complex rhythms, and which has been called โ€˜spiritualโ€™ or โ€˜improvisational.โ€™ But that doesnโ€™t sufficiently capture it. Itโ€™s multidimensional, multidirectional, evocative, and progressive. It is ubiquitous and sparse, divine and secular.โ€ย
โ€œSimply put, it is Black music in its purest state.โ€ย - Shannon J. Effinger,

โ€œThough [โ€˜Open Meโ€™] celebrates 50 years of his first band, it also unpacks the evolution of Black music through the lens of hypnotic soul. โ€˜All Bluesโ€™ reimagines the Miles Davis classic by paring down the horn section and giving it a walking drum line to actually sound like the blues. โ€˜The Whole World,โ€™ a gospel standard, is modernized through rhythmic funk-adjacent drums and looping horns by the trumpeter Corey Wilkes and the saxophonist Alex Harding. Where Les McCann and Eddie Harrisโ€™s โ€˜Compared to Whatโ€™ is a grand affair with soaring piano chords and lively vocals, Elโ€™Zabarโ€™s version is quiet and introspective, the sound of a man softly taking stock of modern-day America.โ€ โ€” Marcus J. Moore, The New York Times

โ€œ[โ€˜Open Meโ€™] not only celebrates the lineage of Black music, it takes pride in his own longevity.โ€ โ€” Marcus J. Moore, The New York Times

The second offering from the new, phenomenal forthcoming album by spiritual jazz legend Kahil El'Zabar I.S.'s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, โ€˜Open Me, A Higher Consciousness of Sound and Spiritโ€™, 'Return of the Lost Tribe' stands as a powerful testament to their legacy and unwavering contribution to Great Black Music.

Both invigorating and spiritually resonant, itโ€™s an EHE classic, composed by Elโ€™Zabar during the Ensembleโ€™s historic early days. It was originally recorded in the 2000s by a group of Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians masters under Elโ€™Zabarโ€™s leadership, incl. Malachi Favors, Joseph Jarman, Kalaparusha Maurice Mcyntyer, and Adegoke Steve Colson. Elโ€™Zabar explains โ€œThe music intends to convey that something powerful and inspired is returning, or coming around again with inspired vigor and wisdomโ€ฆ โ€™Return of The Lost Tribe' speaks to the remembrance of glory that will come again in the present, once we acquire the knowledge to tap into it.โ€

This instrumental tour de force is performed fearlessly by the spiritual jazz shaman and the current EHE long-term collaborators and renowned masters - Corey Wilkes on trumpet and Alex Harding on baritone sax, also featuring James Sanders, Violin on violin and viola, and Ishmael Ali on cello. This is a deep, meaningful explosive sonic journey, a triumphant โ€˜return of the lost tribeโ€™ to a music lineage that transcends space and time, and a powerful statement of their commitment to Ancient / Future / Music.

The EHE constantly shifts gears and tempos in a jazz-blues continuum, in perpetual spontaneity, and โ€œCompared To Whatโ€ is a powerful statement on their incomparable sound. Itโ€™s a deeply funky read of Eugene McDanielโ€™s eternal protest song first recorded by Robert Flack, and later, Les McCann and Eddie Harris. Featuring vocals and kalimba by Kahil El'Zabar I.S., backed by bassist Alex Harding, the EHEโ€™s โ€œCompared To Whatโ€ is 8 minutes of contemplative, dynamic rhythms combined with Elโ€™Zabarโ€™s deep captivating vocals, and accompanying horn and string cacophony that tunes the listener to their higher consciousness.

โ€œCompared To Whatโ€™ was my father, Clifton Blackburn Srโ€™s favorite tune,โ€ says Elโ€™Zabar. โ€œOn Saturdays he would play jazz all day, and later in the evening, he would s**t, sing rhythms, and then he and I would improvise together on the grooves that he taught me. It was all โ€˜Compared to What.โ€™โ€

Celebrating 50 Years of The EEthnic Heritage Ensembles Legacy
and Unwavering Contribution to Great Black Music

โ€˜Open Me, A Higher Consciousness of Sound and Spiritโ€™ is a new Ethnic Heritage Ensemble sound, constantly shifting gears and tempos in a jazz-blues continuum, in perpetual spontaneity, combining their meaningful music history with an innovative approach to arrangements, performance and improvisation.

Open Me is a joyous honouring of portent new directions of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble; itโ€™s a visionary journey into deep roots and future routes, channeling traditions old and new.

Few creative music units can boast such longevity, and fewer still are touring as energetically and recording with the verve of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. With Chicago legend and spiritual jazz master KKahil El'Zabar I.S.at the helm, accompanied by phenomenal CCorey Wilkeson trumpet and the extraordinary Alex Harding on baritone sax, EHE are on their strongest formation yet!

For Open Me, Elโ€™Zabar has chosen to push the sound of the EHE in a new direction by adding string instruments โ€” cello, played by Ishmael Ali, and violin/viola played by JJames Sanders, Violin The addition of strings opens new textural resonances and timbral dimensions in the Ensembleโ€™s sound, linking the work to the tradition of improvising violin and cello from Ray Nance to Billy Bang, Leroy Jenkins, and Abdul Wadud.

As a milestone anniversary celebration and a statement of future intent, Open Me effortlessly carries Elโ€™Zabarโ€™s healing vision of Higher Consciousness of Sound and Spirit.

This is Ancient / Future Music for the Now and Beyond.

Weโ€™re so excited with this phenomenal new release by Andre 3000! New Blue Sun arrived yesterday and is already opening new pathways and possibilities for spiritual avant garde, meditative, expansive and mindful music to wider audiences! ๐Ÿ”ต

It features some of Los Angelesโ€™ best jazz and avant garde musicians: chief collaborator Carlos Niรฑo, Nate Mercereau and especially our own Surya Botofasina (who has also co-written some of the tracks)๐Ÿ’Ž

As Jeff Weiss writes on the Guardian, โ€œThe journey to New Blue Sun was sparked by a chance encounter with Niรฑo, a venerable figure in LAโ€™s experimental music scene, at a Venice supermarket. The composer, producer and percussionist invited Andrรฉ to a performance that night, at which Niรฑo and friends played the music of Alice Coltrane. Andrรฉ had been listening to her all week and interpreted this as a sign.

โ€œHeโ€™s incredibly humble,โ€ says Niรฑo, who served as the chief collaborator and unofficial executive producer of New Blue Sun. โ€œHe considers himself new to all of this, even if he inspired a lot of these musicians at the sessions. Even if this isnโ€™t hip-hop per se, itโ€™s a continuation of his approach: the same breath control, ingenuity, experimentation and creativity.โ€

When lockdown lifted, Andrรฉ trekked to Niรฑoโ€™s garage studio in Canoga Park for two four-hour sessions in trio and quartet formation. Six months later, Andrรฉ called Niรฑo to tell him that he had been listening nonstop to their recordings and wanted to pursue that direction. From there, they recorded endless hours of music together. At Niรฑoโ€™s invitation, the elite talents of the LA experimental scene came on board.โ€

The rest is history.

Congratulations to , Carlos Niรฑo, , - thank you for your vision, creativity and unifying energy in music, oneness and spirit ๐Ÿ’Ž
