🔍 SPOTLIGHT 🔎

Last weekend our author, the house historian Melanie Backe-Hansen, got front-page coverage in in the Financial Times House & Home section. ‘My focus is on the stories of people,’ she says. One of her clients had seen the ghost of a woman walking through their house. A medium named her Edith, and Backe-Hansen did find that a girl called Edith had lived there in the 19th century.

We do like a good story!

Clearing out the kitchen cupboards the other day, I came across an Ian Logan cake tin.

In the Swinging Sixties, Ian Logan and his partners at JRM Design created a pioneering line of tin trays and other homeware with a popular Middle Eastern-inspired motif called Salome. I bought it then without knowing who Ian was. Years later, pure chance brought him into our publishing house, and together we created 'Logomotive: Railroad Graphics and the American Dream'.

Terence Conran christened him the Tin Man of Design: https://bit.ly/IanLogan

If you want somewhere to launch an architecture book, you could hardly do it better than the National Liberal Club at 1 Whitehall Place. From the marble staircase and the pillared Smoking Room through to the arched windows, everything shouts magnífica. A perfect match for our new book ‘Doors of London’, celebrating style and craftsmanship.

At a sold-out Authors' Club event, Cath Harries Photography and Melanie Backe-Hansen, authors of ‘Doors of London’, joined their Editor C.J. Schüler to talk about some of the most overlooked but photogenic aspects of the city.

An evening talk on doors was held at the historic Authors’ Club in London, presented by the editor and authors of ‘Doors of London’.

Spending Christmas in the Suffolk coastal town of Aldeburgh gave me an opportunity to do a bit of casual door spotting, and what I found fully confirmed this former sea port’s reputation as a treasure trove of architectural detail. SR.
