IC In-depth: Death of the City?
The chancellor Rishi Sunak wants to make the UK “the world’s most exciting financial services hub for decades to come”.
But the City faces two mammoth challenges. First, it must cope with Brexit. This means the loss of unhindered access to its largest export market, and the gradual leaching away of business to the EU.
Second, it has to plot a new course for its chief intangible asset – human capital. With its roots in seventeenth century coffee house culture, London’s finance hub has always been a people business. But despite being frantically busy for the past 16 months, the City’s workers have been almost totally absent from their offices.
As ever, the question for investors is whether these obstacles could lead to opportunities. Is a bet on the City’s success simply a trade in political rhetoric, or one of the UK’s most resilient industries?
