San Miguel de Allende 🇲🇽

One of the most beautiful places I visited in Mexico, San Miguel is colourful, historic city where you could spend days just wandering the streets taking in the architecture.

I visited during the time when the planets were in a line and some entrepreneurial people had brought huge telescopes into the main square which was a great experience. Planets aside, the evening & night sky in San Miguel de Allende is always spectacular. Watching the sun setting over the pink Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel was a lovely way to spend each evening.

Memorable foodie experiences in Taiwan!

Food is such an important part of travelling for me, like it is for so many of us. When I visited Taiwan in February, I went not knowing a huge amount about Taiwanese food but an open mind to try lots of new things.

Photo 1 (📸 ) This was taken at Luodong night market, a very busy street food market with dozens (if not hundreds) of stalls selling affordable local snacks and delicacies.

Photo 2 - For dinner one evening I ate at Silk's Place Yilan. Cherry Valley Duck at Red Lantern restaurant is famous across Taiwan and here you'll be served an elaborate set menu of duck dishes. A highlight was the crispy duck skin sushi rolls which we couldn't get enough of!

Photo 3 - Stinky Tofu - you might already have seen my tasting video reel (if not then check out my feed to watch it). Stinky Tofu recently replaced horse milk as the most disgusting thing I've eaten. Whilst walking around the night market we kept getting a waft of a disgusting smell, turns out it was the infamous stinky tofu, which tasted as bad as the smell. It's worth noting this is clearly a personal preference as lots of people were queuing up for it.

Photo 4 - Ti-hoeh-koé also known as pig's blood cake, is a blood pudding served on a stick as street food in Taiwan. It's made with sticky rice and pig's blood often topped with peanut powder. It was rich and actually pretty tasty, although it was super filling and made your teeth stick together!

Photo 5 - Din Tai Fung is a Taiwanese restaurant chain specialising in xiaolongbao, a type of bao with 18 folds.  In November 2009 the Michelin Guide awarded the restaurant's first Hong Kong branch at Tsim Sha Tsui, Silvercord Branch, a Michelin Star, although all of the branches are very popular. I did try making xiaolongbao myself at  which was great fun, although they didn't turn out quite like this!

MAZUNTE 🇲🇽

From the end of December until the beginning of February I was travelling in Mexico. I only intended to spend a couple of nights in Mazunte but kept extending my stay as I really loved it.

The second photo was the view from my It was treehouse style & open fronted so I'd wake up every morning as the sun came up (and see the moonrise in the evening) and head down to the ocean for a swim to start my day.

It's on the whale migration route so most days you'd be able to spot whales breaching even from the shore.

Thanks to for suggesting I'd like it there, you were certainly right!

A new piece in 📝 'Soul to Seoul' 🇰🇷

A while ago I watched 'Return to Seoul' and loved the scene where the lead character dances in a bar to 'Bizarre Love Triangle' by New Order. It was an LP bar, where patrons could request songs from the thousands strong private collection of the owner.

After quite a lot of research I managed to find out the location of the real bar that was featured. I ended up in an online deep dive to find that there are dozens of LP bars in Seoul - mostly that started out as private collections. Some were in living rooms of houses, others in basements, but all with eclectic customers and musical choices.

I loved visiting the bars and meeting some of the owners & DJs to learn about the stories behind the collections.

I spent an educational day at Ikken House during my time in Taiwan 🇹🇼 (.tw) 🍃☕️

Pingxi was historically an agricultural town in the mountains, producing tea, to***co and fresh produce for export. In 1908 the village commissioned a Japanese mining company, Fujita, to test-mine the area. Fujita alongside the Yan family later formed the Taiyang Mining Company leading to the Pingxi railway route - which brought prosperity to the town.

Ikken House itself is a Japanese-style academy structure, bulit in the 14th year of the Showa Era - 1939. It was originally a guesthouse in a quaintly asymmetrical design, with a living space, dorm rooms, a kitchen and entertainment areas.

Now, it's open to the public with an extensive library area, collections of art and historic artefacts from Pingxi’s development period. There are daily musical performances, tea ceremonies and extravagant fresh lunches served in the communal area overlooking the koi pond.

Butterflies 🦋

I actually spent a fair amount of my time in Mexico trying to experience the migration of the Monarch Butterflies.

There are number of places across Michoacán & Mexico state where you can potentially see them. I first went to Piedra Herrada and did a steep uphill hike - at the highest point of of the biosphere I did see some butterflies but it wasn't anywhere near the number I hoped for.

My second attempt was Cerro Pelon - known as being the least accessible of the sites. After a long journey, some slightly confused local people told me that the butterflies hadn't come this year, or at least hadn't arrived yet.

My third attempt was El Rosario - I was initially reluctant to visit here as during the week the area can get very busy with tourists.

However I visited on a couple of weekdays and there were very few people there. It was worth the effort and was a magnificent experience. On every tree, every branch and even under foot (be very careful where you are stepping) there were beautiful orangey red Monarch butterflies.

So many were flying around it was like a swarm of locusts or midges and they would almost completely cover the light at some points!

My Instagram 'On this day' reminder of my month in Myanmar in January 2020.

They described San Agustinillo as the nicest stretch of beach on the Oaxacan coast which I think is possibly true. I've taken a few days here to not do very much, except read, swim, listen to music & spot wildlife.

I've been staying at which is slightly set back off the main road meaning that although you can still hear the waves, you're surrounded by the trees which is incredibly peaceful. I've been sleeping very well here.

Happy New Year from Mexico City 🇲🇽

I started my time here by looking around Mexico City's Centro Histórico!🌟 Here's your guide to the must-see landmarks in the historical centre.

Catedral Metropolitana (1573–1813): This iconic cathedral took 240 years to complete, blending Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles. When I visited a service was taking place but you could still walk around and it's beautiful place to visit. It was damaged in an earthquake and you can see some of the chambers are very slanted. Open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM it is free to enter.

🎨 Palacio de Bellas Artes (1904–1934): A stunning mix of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, it’s home to incredible murals by Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros. Open Tue–Sun, 11 AM to 5 PM. Even if you don't go inside it's worth walking past to see the impressive architecture.

🌳 Alameda Central (1592): Latin America’s oldest public park, this peaceful shady area is a nice place to walk and get a bit of quiet from the busy streets.

📍 Plaza de la Constitución (Zócalo) This central plaza has witnessed centuries of Mexican history and prior to the colonial period it was the main ceremonial center in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan

🇲🇽 Palacio Nacional - Originally Hernán Cortés's palace, it now houses government offices and Diego Rivera’s famous murals. Open Tue–Sun, 9 A

As we're coming to the end of 2024 I thought I'd share a little behind the scenes of 3 of the TV shows I've hosted this year.

In February I hosted & directed 'So You Think You Know' in . The show went out on SKY in the UK & ONS in the Netherlands and in April the series was awarded 'Broadcast Programme of the Year' at the Trav Media Awards 2024. The video shown here is a behind the scenes with DOP .co filming on top of the incredible Xunantunich.

In June I went back to Türkiye to film another episode of which is on - this time I headed to Antalya and my friend joined me to explore the history, diving and culture of the region.

In October I filmed a show for Travelxp called 'Navratri - The Nine Nights'. It was my first time in Gujarat and I loved learning about Navratri festival. The episode came out last week and I appreciate all the nice messages I've received about the show!

A Christmas public service announcement 🎄⛄️🎅

The lyrics to the famous Christmas carol are NOT...

🎵 Good King Wencelas last looked out 🎵

but

🎵 Good King Wenceslas looked out 🎵

The carol is based on the life of Saint Wenceslaus / Wenceslas I, not a King in fact but actually the Duke of Bohemia, who lived from 907 to 935. He was known for helping the poor and needy and the carol refers to him going out to help on the 'Feast of Stephen' or what we call Boxing Day now in the UK.

He was buried in the Basilica of St. Wenceslaus in Stará Boleslav, St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. When I visited there was a beautiful, colourful sunset which made the views from the hill & Prague Castle pretty special.
