Galle, a small town in the south west coast of Sri Lanka.

Dates back to ancient times when it served as a trading port for various civilizations including the Greeks, Persians, Romans, and Arabs.

The Portuguese arrived in Sri Lanka in the early 16th century and established a fort in Galle in 1588. The Galle Fort was built to protect the city from other colonial powers.

Then in the 17th century The Dutch captured Galle from the Portuguese in 1640 after a fierce battle. The Dutch expanded and reinforced the existing fortifications and developed Galle into a major trading port in the region.
Under Dutch rule Galle was the island nation's capital city until 1656, when Colombo replaced it.

Then in the 19th century, the British gained control of Galle in 1796 after defeating the Dutch. Under British rule, Galle continued to be an important administrative and trading center in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka gained independence from the British in 1948.
In 1988, the historic Galle Fort was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved colonial architecture and historical significance.
