Watanga FC has secured a spot in the grand final of the Paynesville Cup pre-season tournament, after defeating newly promoted Discoveries Football Club a 1-0.

Junior Johnson scored from the spot in the second half to help the orange first division champions.

The final is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 7th at the SKD Practice pitch in Paynesville City, Monrovia.

Watanga FC remains undefeated in the tournament, having played four games and scoring a total of 16 goals while only conceding 2.

In the final, Watanga FC will be facing off against Black Man Warrior FC on Sunday at 4:00 PM.

Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Konneh writes...

"I am sad to report that my Senate office in the Capitol Building was burglarized over the weekend.

The burglars entered through the back window, ransacked the office, and made away with documents related to the MedTech investigation, a log of compensation and gasoline benefits my staff and I have received since February, and LRD 10,000 office petty cash for staff lunch.

I am told that two other Senators’ offices were affected by the burglary. I'm reporting this here for two reasons: 1) the public needs to know when criminals break into a public building.

We and our staff’s safety matters, and 2) to create awareness concerning any stringent security measures the Legislature may put in place to protect lawmakers, their staffers, and public records to prevent a recurrence. This is very unfortunate.

GoL Holds Cross Consultative Meeting With MACs on NGOs Sectorial Clearance

Monrovia, Liberia (Wednesday, May 22, 2024): The Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning on Wednesday held a day-long consultative meeting with sector ministries, agencies and commissions (MACs) on Non-Governmental Organizations or NGOs sectorial clearance.

The objective of the gathering is to enhance the accreditation and registration process of NGOs operating in the country.

Representing Finance and Development Planning Minister Hon. Boima S. Kamara at the consultative forum, the Deputy Minister for Budget and Development Planning, Hon. Tanneh G. Brunson thanked all participating Ministries, Agencies and Commissions (MACs) for the level of efforts shown to form part of the meeting.

Hon. Brunson disclosed that the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning through the Department of Economic Management developed and revised the Aid and NGOs Policy guidelines, and procedural manual in 2022, a one stop shop NGO online registration and accreditation system.

Hon. Brunson noted that it was developed and launched on August 18, 2022 to enhance the accreditation and registration process of NGOs operating in the country.

However, prior to the launch of the platform, NGOs registration and accreditation were done through a manual process which had several challenges including long bureaucracies, loss of documents, too much paper trail taking two weeks’ process to complete.

According to her, the development of the new platform was completed to remove the bottlenecks associated with the manual process to obtain sectorial clearance from sector ministries, agencies and commissions MACs) with accreditation from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.

She added that both parties had an engagement meeting with partners from the civil society organizations, National NGOs and international NGOs operating in Liberia to address major concerns raised by all partners including issue of discrepancy in fees for sector clearance across government and high fees charged at various entities.

The consultative meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister for Budget and Development Planning, Hon. Tanneh G. Brunson, Deputy Minister for Economic Management, Hon. Dehpue Zuo, Assistant Minister for External Resource and Debt Management, Hon. Alice Williams, officials from Ministries, Agencies, Commissions (MACs) and staff from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.

Representative Frank Saah Foko Threatens Mass Protest Over Rising Rice Price.

Montserrado County District #9 Representative Frank Saah Foko has vowed to lead a mass protest to prevent government officials from going to work if the price of rice in Liberia continues to rise.

On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at the Executive Mansion, Presidential Press Secretary Kula Fofana addressed journalists, clarifying that the government has not approved any increase in the price of Indian parboiled rice.

This statement comes in response to a previous announcement by the Ministry of Commerce, which had declared on Monday, May 20, 2024, that the price of Indian parboiled rice would rise from US$16.50 to US$18.50 per bag due to a tax imposed by the Indian government.

Fofana explained that following a meeting between President Joseph Boakai and rice importers, the government is now working out modalities to maintain the current price of Indian parboiled rice in the market.

She reassured the public that the administration is committed to ensuring the affordability of this staple food.

Despite this assurance, Representative Foko, in an interview with reporters at his Capitol Building office on Tuesday, expressed his determination to mobilize a mass protest.

The Congress for Democratic Change lawmaker threatened to stop President Boakai and other government officials from performing their duties until the issue of rice prices was addressed decisively.

“As a lawmaker representing the people, the rising cost of rice is a significant concern. I will not stand by while our citizens suffer due to increased prices,” Foko declared.

“If the President and his administration do not act swiftly to resolve this matter, I will lead a protest to block government operations.”

This pronouncement comes amid conflicting reports from the market.

Despite the government’s claim of no price increase, a visit by our reporter to the Duala Market revealed that a bag of rice is being sold for between US$18.50 and US$19.00.

This discrepancy has fueled public frustration and skepticism about the government's handling of the situation.

Some citizens have criticized Representative Foko's stance, accusing him of hypocrisy.

They pointed out that he remained silent during similar price increases under the previous CDC administration.

“Where was Representative Foko when the price of rice went up last time? This sudden concern seems more political than genuine,” remarked a market vendor.

My wife took my phone and deleted my girlfriend, Naomi's number and saved her own number as Naomi.

I didn't know that someone had told my wife about Naomi, I then got an SMS From Naomi asking for money 5,000 Ghana cedis. I rushed to my wife and lied to her that I needed 5,000 for an emergency. I told her that my brother was sick and he needed the money urgently.

My wife gave me the money and I rushed to send it to the account number written in the message. When I was relaxing at home after work, I kept wondering if Naomi had received the money.

I sent her an SMS to find out if she had received the money. Her response was, "Call me now." I went outside behind the house to make a call. eeeh You can imagine my horror face when I heard my wife's voice instead of Naomi, It's been three days am still standing outside. I don't know how to get back into my own house!!!

Any advice for borga?

MFDP Categorically Denies Calling for Project Proposals under a so-called Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) Project.

The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning has categorically denied calling for project proposals under the so-called MFDP/Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) project.

The individuals purporting to be the legitimate AFAWA do not represent this reputable entity which leverages the African Development Bank’s financial instruments and utilizes innovative solutions drastically transform the banking and financial landscape in Africa.

The fictitious request for proposals claims in an online publication, “Within the framework of the Department of Finance, the partnership is looking to support projects which intends to enhance the viability and sustainability of formal SMEs and allow them to access financing opportunities to grow their businesses.”

It stated further, “we encourage business associations, incubators, accelerators, formal cooperatives, eligible civil society organizations and other legal entities to share proposals aligned with the objectives and themes set out below.”

The Ministry strongly denies any connection whatsoever to this bogus and criminal enterprise masquerading as AFAWA and terms it as an attempt to exploit and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning further denies that it is in no collaboration whatsoever with AFAWA soliciting funding requests for a specific project minimum threshold for requesting funding from this call for proposal is $100,000 and the maximum threshold is $750,000.

The Ministry of Finance through this medium also wants to bring to the attention of the public that a fake account was created by those in this criminal enterprise to facilitate the act: [email protected]., and that the signature of thhe Deputy Minister of Budget and Development Planning Hon. Tanneh G. Brunson was also forrged in that fradulently copied in that bogus publication

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry continues to alert members of the public about these dubious schemes aimed at swindling unsuspecting folks. The Ministry hereby informs the public that all of its official pronouncements are always published on the Ministry’s official website (www.mfdp.gov.lr) as well as its official page. Moreover, everyone is asked to verify information with the relevant authorities before engaging in any financial transactions in the name of the Ministry.
