Up until that terrible evening on October 20, that generations of Nigerians will never forget, what many now call The Lekki Massacre. The Nigerian army drove its tankers to the popular Lekki toll gate in Lagos, Nigeria, and opened fire on unarmed protesters who were singing the national anthem and draped in the Nigerian flag.

The judicial panel of inquiry and restitution, commissioned by the government to probe the violence, confirmed that army soldiers shot, injured, and killed peaceful protesters. The report calls the shootings “a massacre”.

In their report, submitted to the government, the panel found that there had been 48 casualties, including 11 people killed, and 4 people missing. It said the army did not adhere to its own rules of engagement and its conduct was exacerbated by its refusal to allow ambulances render medical assistance to victims

Media investigations confirmed that the Nigerian army shot and killed defenseless citizens.
