Episode 12 of the Gypsy Jazz Hangouts Podcast is being premiered on YouTube tonight at 8pm! Special guest Keith Ames from the Musicians Union had lots of interesting things to say about the challenges facing working musicians in a post COVID 2021. Between me him and fellow guest there was plenty to talk about, and plenty of optimism too. Who’d have thought Noddy Holder was such a massive Django Reinhardt fan? Link in the bio

"One thing this last year has highlighted is how little musicians make when they're not playing live or teaching. We're mostly streaming, it's where 85% of music is consumed now, and there's no money in it. You get .003p etc. There is a government inquiry into the future economics of streaming going on right now. Infact the next hearing I think might be tomorrow with the small labels. So you can watch it on Parliament TV"

Keith Ames Communications, PR, and Marketing official for the MUSICIANS UNION, Editor of The Musician magazine, songwriter and lyricist joined my self and London based gypsy jazz guitarist Andrea Vergani to discuss the challenges facing working musicians in a post COVID 2021. Fascinating discussion with plenty of optimism for the future! And even some bizzare Django related facts about Noddy Holder! Watch the youtube premiere this Wednesday evening, 8pm!

RIP Tony Rice 1951-2020 So, Tony Rice was an outstanding guitar player from the bluegrass tradition. Together with the likes of Dave Grisman, he developed the musical tradition by incorporating elements of jazz and other genres into his virtuoso bluegrass improvising and arranging. He really was just mint. Going through his albums, you’ll find the odd Django Reinhardt tune in there, a few has standards, as well as plenty of old time music too. A really superb guitar player, I’d love to be able to play like him but it’s pretty tricky stuff! Go check him out! So much good playing to get stuck into.

Episode 10 of Gypsy Jazz Hangouts is being premiered on YouTube this Monday at 8pm!

Recorded in 20th September in the beer garden of The Woodman pub in Highgate, the four of us got together for a pint on what turned out to be the last sunny weekend of the year!

Lots of talk about COVID, struggling to find work as a musician due to lockdown restrictions, applying for government financial aid, the slow death of music venues, Drill Rap, Cardi B, breaking super injunctions, and plenty of good tunes too!

Joining me was Curtis Volp on guitar, Tobie Medland on Violin and Marcus Penrose on bass. Check it out!

How many guitars do you really need? How ever many you have now, plus 1!

Had a blast with amazing guitarist and all round top bloke Remi Harris in his music HQ, recording episode 9 of the GYPSY JAZZ HANGOUTS podcast. Was super interesting discussing how he adapts his playing technique slightly depending on which guitar he's playing and what style (which he demonstrates on a few of his MANY guitars). Talked about talked about loads of guitarists from different genres (Pat Martino, Peter Green, Jimmy Hendrix) and how he's learned to proudly incorporate his early blues and rock influences into his gypsy jazz playing, instead of avoiding them.

Check out the premiere of the full episode on youtube THIS THURSDAY at 8pm GMT! 20/08/20. Prize goes to the funniest comments in the live chat!
