Greetings, lovely community! šŸŒŸ Ever stopped to reflect on the meaning of 'OUR PEOPLES'? It's a phrase that holds a world of significance and is unique to each of us. What values or qualities do you associate with 'our people'? Are they defined by shared experiences, beliefs, or a sense of belonging? šŸ’ Let's explore this together and celebrate our differences. Feel free to share your thoughts, will our liberation struggles ever end, or is it an ongoing journey? letā€™s discuss! āœØ

I have traveled across the length and breath of Africa, and i have not seen one poor person who is a beggar, who is a thief such wealth i have seen in this country, such high moral values. Lord Macaulay's address to the British Parliament 2nd Feb, 1835 describing Africa.

The first major factor that affected Africaā€™s Cultural evolution was a Cultural assessment by the British. Consequently an inferiority complex was forced upon us leading to the next stage of our Cultural evolution; Cultural Glorification. While some were enslaved physically, the rest of us (left behind) were enslaved mentally.

The Glorification of Western culture is pushing our indigenous culture to the backseat. Be proud of what makes you who you are.

They told us the Benin Bronzes would not be secure and properly cared for at home in Nigeria, yet they have proved to all Africans that our cultural heritage is more protected in the British Museum.

Now on exhibition (Tate Modern)

Repost
šŸ“ø Ruth Ginika Ossai's photographic series 'Portraits of a Comumunity' celebrates the diversity of Londonā€™s African diaspora.

Over the course of two weeks, an intergenerational group of 16 participants convened at Tate Modern to get to know one another, to hear from Ruth about her practice, and to think about what it means to represent culture and identity through portraiture. They shared stories of family, (re)connection to homeland, ancestry, and the importance of keeping identity and heritage alive outside of the African continent. The final portraits are a testament to these stories.

ā€˜I wish my images to fill the people I photograph with power and agency, so they can be free and allow their true selves to shine through.ā€™ - šŸ’œ

Find Ossai's work on display in A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography, now open at Tate Modern.

Portraits of a Community was developed in partnership with , an organisation committed to creating diverse opportunities to learn and experience West African languages, arts & culture.

Appreciate the African perspective of history... African history through the European eyeglass, which would mean writing out of the context of oral tradition.
