New York’s Public Hospitals house and preserve over 7,000 original artworks dating back to the 1930s, including Keith Haring’s gargantuan mural, which covers multiple floors of the city's Woodhull Hospital.

This unusual alliance has manifested itself in NYC Health + Hospitals’ Art in Medicine department, which curates artwork, promotes new artists, and organises exhibitions around its storied history of taking care of the emotional well-being of its patients and their loved ones.

Over the decades, this array of art has developed an aesthetic of its own, becoming a distinct art culture within New York’s thriving art scene. Head over to the link in our bio for more details.

Get ready to brush up your pasting and sketching skills, because after a period of dormancy, zines are back in fashion all over the world, and especially in India.

The word zine is essentially an abbreviated form of a magazine, which is exactly what it purports to be. Amy Poehler’s 2021 film Moxie, as well as exhibitions such as Copy Machine Manifestos, are behind zines getting a second wind.

Their origin dates back to the 1930s, when the birth of science fiction fan culture, and subsequently fanzines, found considerable popularity. Head over to the link in our bio to find out why they’ve found a growing audience in India.

Once scarred by deforestation, Scotland is on the cusp of becoming the world's inaugural “rewilding nation”.

About 30% of the country’s public land has been committed to rewilding by 2030, along with bringing back keystone species and creating protected coastal havens.

The narrative of rewilding also comes alive through biking and trekking activities across the Highlands, which have been heavily promoted. To further curb carbon emissions, Scotland has banned older vehicles, making the landscape even more serene and the perfect place for a calm and green retreat.

After some places have started placing a surcharge on day-trippers and tourists to combat overtourism, one might think that travelling to tourist hotspots might do more harm than good.

But that is only half the picture, and there are several instances that redeem the humble traveller.

Click on the link in our bio to see how revenue generated from tourism has given a new lease of life to historical research, as well as conservation of local flora and fauna.

Skinny is back in trend, but this time for hotels!
PituRooms in the city of Salatiga in Indonesia measures just 9 feet across, and consists of seven rooms (Pitu is Javanese for seven). While the skinniness of the hotel has more to do with the land available than any clout-chasing, it does have breathtaking views.

300 miles southeast of Jakarta, Salatiga is mostly unknown to visitors who head to Yogyakarta or Bali for their holidays instead, and is known for its quality of life.
So if you want to explore a lesser-known side (and definitely a lesser-known architectural niche), this can be a great place to start.

Off the coast of California stand some of the most unexpected shelters for marine life. These are artificially created and man-made structures, but they aren’t intentional – making the shelter all the more beautiful to behold.

After several years of use, these oil rigs were left abandoned, having fulfilled their purpose for humans. But thanks to their stable foundations and surface, they have become a shelter for several rockfish, which have multiplied to create mini coral reefs and ecosystems among these rigs.

The biodiversity at some of these abandoned structures is so complex that it has become one of the most productive ocean habitats in the world, providing shelter to bigger fishes and even sea lions!

We tend to look at Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza mostly as a historic wonder – a place that might hold the pathway to ancient wisdom. What if it also held the answers to the future?

‘Forever Is Now’ is an ongoing exhibition at the pyramids which has 14 artists creating site-specific installations that bridge Egyptian heritage with modern themes like renewable energy and artificial intelligence.

Despite each artist’s unique approach with the show, every single one of them draws a line between the antique and the contemporary to reflect how the past continually informs the present and the future.

When the US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, visited the country for the first time as a teenager in the 1980s, he immediately fell in love with it. India’s “warmth, cultural heritage, and amazing people” brought him back for a visit again in the 1990s, and many times thereafter.

Through all his visits to the country – especially his current stint as the US Ambassador – he has seen the nation evolve in unprecedented ways.

“The India of today is different in many ways from that of the 1980’s – after all, not many people back then might have imagined the country landing a spacecraft on the dark side of the moon,” he told us in an exclusive interview. “But I’ve also been impressed with how much has remained the same... That incredible richness and vitality is the same as it’s always been.”

It is perhaps these qualities that have evoked in him a zeal for India’s generation on the rise. “I think India’s potential is limited only by its aspiration... One of my key goals as US Ambassador to India is to create opportunities for this generation to achieve this potential,” he told us.

Catch our conversation with the Ambassador on the link in our bio, where we discuss everything from how he plans to achieve this goal to the Indian cities he is most excited to explore.

How far will you go for a good party? Whatever your answer is, it’s not far enough because Detour Discotheque, recently hosted in Scotland's Isle of Coll, is known as the 'world's most remote disco.'

Styled after legendary New York City nightclubs of the 1970s, this is only the second Detour Discotheque since the inaugural session last year at a tiny village in the Westfjords of Iceland.

The pop-up event, however, is not just about the dance parties; it's also about journeying to remote locations and exploring unique experiences.

Not that we needed it, but we have found yet another reason to travel! UNESCO recently updated its World Heritage Sites’ list with 42 additions. And though we cannot wait to explore each of these gems, we’ve picked three as our priority destinations.

First up are the Old Tea Forests of the Jingmai Mountain in China’s Pu’er where locals have been following traditional tea practices that began all the way back in the 10th Century to preserve the native fauna and flora.

Our second pick is the Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker, Netherlands, which was built between 1774 and 1781 as an orrery, or a mechanical scale model of the solar system. The moving model remarkably still works, and is the oldest orrery in the world.

And lastly is South Korea’s Gaya Tumuli which has seven tomb clusters of Korea's ancient Gaya Confederacy, developed between the 1st and the 6th Centuries. Although these earthen mounds are burial chambers, there is a quiet magnificence and beauty to the tumuli that deserves a visit.

Is there any destination in the list that you’d pick as your favourite? Let us know in the comments.

The Shore Temple at Mamallapuram recently made history by becoming India's first Green Energy Archaeological Site. With solar power plants, electric buggies driven by local women – along with charging stations for electric vehicles in the parking lot – as well as kiosks for potable water (reducing the need for single-use plastic bottles), this rock-cut temple dating back to the 6th century has become one of the most sustainable spaces of architectural heritage today.
