This week at our Naseeha session we reflected on verses 25-29 of Surah Yusuf.

When the Aziz walks in on his wife Zulaykha trying to seduce Prophet Yusuf (as), and tearing his clothes in an attempt to get her way, we see her conniving ways come out. She completely gaslights the situation and implies that Yusuf (as) was trying to seduce her. She contorts the whole reality by the way she frames her words. She blames others while making herself look innocent.

“She said, ‘What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?’”. (Surah Yusuf verse 25)

We see that in an instant she is able to come up with a way to cover up her crimes. She could think on her feet in this situation because she was so strongly in touch with her desires and lower nafs.

Indeed it was Shaytan who was the first to gaslight and contort reality due to his pride - a result of his lowly nafs.

Shaytan contorted the reality to blame Allah for him not prostrating to Adam (as) as he had been commanded to. He looked for blame elsewhere.

“[Iblees] said, “My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all.” (Surah al Hijr, verse 39)

As Muslims, let us take heed of these lessons, and not become of those who contort the reality to due to being experts of our own desires, while not using the aql (mind) that we have been blessed with. Let us be Believers who introspect and are able to see our faults, and not those who externalise blame to anything else - whether that’s to others, to our circumstances or even the weather!

We continued our Naseeha session on Surah Yusuf at the Womens centre, where the plot has begun to thicken as the Azeez’s wife has attempted to seduce Yusuf (as).

We discussed verses 23-24 where Allah swt says-

“And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, ‘Come, you.’ He said, ‘[I seek] the refuge of Allah. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed.’
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants.”

We discussed how this particular segment is particularly interesting to us women, as we go through an emotional rollercoaster of understanding the human mind.

We reflected on the predicament that prophet Yusuf (as) found himself in, and that due to him living a God Centric life, it was the embrace and fear of Allah which saved him from a great sin. Indeed, by living a God Centric life ourselves we hope that Allah will save us in our times of need too.

We also pondered upon Allah’s infinite mercy. In the Hadith it is mentioned that when a person intends to do a good deed and then does it, they have a multiplied reward. Whereas when then intended a bad deed and then stayed away from it, they receive a good deed to to their intention of obedience to Allah. Even acting on the bad deed receives just one bad deed written, while the good deed receives multiple rewards! SubhanAllah!

Alhamdulillah we are continuing with our nasheeds sessions where we are taking lessons from Surah Yusuf.

We discussed verses 21-22 during our last session.

Here prophet Yusuf (as) arrives in Egypt and is bought by a man whom he later finds out is the Aziz, the minister of Egypt.

The Aziz asks his wife to take good care of this boy he has purchased. He sees something special in this boy named Yusuf and therefore he asks that he is taken good care of, more than a slave usually would be. A reflection we take from this is the ability that some people have to identify special character is others. The Aziz recognised that there was something special in Yusuf (as). SubhanAllah I myself have seen people who are able to see the good in others and pick out special qualities in others.

The verse also mentions that Allah is always prevailing and predominant in his plans and affairs. How true this is. Every single moment of our lives is planned as Allah wants it, and He SWT ensures that all circumstances are as they should be. Nothing is by chance. No meeting or encounter is by chance.

When we ponder upon the stages of Hijra (migration to Madinah), when the Prophet Muhammad (saw) was commanded to make the Hijra and Abu Bakr (ra) delayed his move anti end up being blessed to accompany the Prophet (saw). The Quraysh had plans to murder the Prophet (saw), so him and Abu Bakr (ra) found themselves seeking shelter in a cave.

When Allah has a plan, He can change the circumstances and even nature to His advantage.

SubhanAllah it was a spiderweb which covered the cave and saved the Prophet and Abu Bakr from being discovered!

From this we learn that we are in our lives as Allah plans for us. Even that test or difficulty we are going through right now is from Allah’s plan. He puts us where He wants us to be right now, so that His plans for us can come into fruition. And know that Allah, the All-Merciful only wants good for us, even though we may not perceive or understand it at this moment.

Yesterday’s Tea with a Counsellor session was discussing controlling behaviour.

It is quite common to see controlling behaviour in women (and no doubt men too). A woman may try to control her husband, or her children, or other family members and friends. She may seek to control her environment and surroundings. For example, having control over her kitchen, not allowing anyone to touch her things, expecting that chores are done in a specific manner and not being good enough done any other way. Expecting her interpretation of ‘perfect’ in everything.

Controlling behaviour can happen for numerous reasons. It could be due to past experiences, or connected to childhood. For some it’s a way to seek validation. At the core of controlling behaviour is to seek safety and security.

In order for a person to understand why they have control behaviours and tendencies, they need to begin by asking themselves questions and doing some inner work. Why do you feel you have to have control in that area? What would happen if it was done differently? Is it connected with a past experience.

We must reflect and realise that we cannot force others to love us or like us, in fact trying to control others can have the opposite effect and cause dislike.

Rather than seeking to control others, we should realise that this is an area which is not fully within our control. We do have control over ourselves though- over our own behaviours and actions. By controlling our own behaviours and actions, we can also have influence over those around us. Isn’t controlling our selves something we should give more focus on?

What is something that you need to let go of?

Alhamdulillah we had a great day back today at the Women’s centre.

We started the day off with a bang, with our fitness session with sister Safiya. It was a great feeling to get back and move our bodies.

We then had a counselling session with sister Aysha. We reflected on the year gone by, some of our achievements from last year and what we hope to work on for 2025.

We ended the day with the naseeha session and had a short presentation of lessons we can take from travelling for umrah. M***iyah Nasima shared her reflections having returned from umrah very recently.

Alhamdulillah for a reflective day.

The Mehron Nisa Women’s Centre is open again tomorrow after the break Alhamdulillah.

While the last year has passed by in what seems like a flash, make 2025 count by prioritising time for your physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. The Mehron Nisa women’s centre focuses on just that in a welcoming and Muslimah friendly environment.

This week as part of the naseeha session at the Mehron Nisa Women’s Centre, we continued with the story of Yusuf (as).

We spoke about the return of Yusuf’s (as) brothers to their father Yaqub (as), where they fed him the lie that a wolf had killed his son. They brought proof in the form of a blood stained shirt. One thing they forgot it that if a wolf had indeed eaten Yusuf (as) then the shirt would also be torn to shreds, not just blood stained.

Upon seeing the untorn shirt, Yaqub (as) was not convinced of his son’s story, yet he was powerless to do something about it. He neither had his son, nor did he have a way to discover the truth. This is the point where Yaqub (as) concludes that his only path is to have ‘Sabrun jameel’ I.e. beautiful patience.

“And they brought upon his shirt false blood. [Jacob] said, “Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help against that which you describe.” (Surah Yusuf, verse 18)

The verse explains to us what sabrun jameel is - it is contained in the words ‘Allahu al-Musta’aan’ - meaning to turn to Allah to seek His Help, and not to complain to those who cannot help you. Indeed, Allah is the one who can change our affairs, and give us solutions from where we cannot even imagine.

Reading these verses, my thoughts cannot help but turn to the current situation of the ummah. It seems a tide may have turned in ash-Shaam. WaAllahu al-Musta’aan, He swt is the one we turn to for help and we trust that His victory will come in ways we may not comprehend. May we witness the relief soon.

Alhamdulillah we had our Naseeha session at Mehron Nisa Women’s Centre today on the topic of Surah Yusuf. We looked at verses 4-6.

“Mention when Yusuf said to his father, “O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.”

“He said, “O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy.”

“And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Ya’qub, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Ibrahim and IsHaaq. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise.”

Prophet Yusuf (as) was blessed with the ability to interpret dreams. Little did he know that the dream he narrates to his father was one that would later come true many years later later.

Yusuf (as) was from a family of prophets, with his lineage going back to the prophet Ibrahim (as). We reflected upon our own families, and what our children and grandchildren would be like. There is great need for us to build high aspirations in our children to reach lofty goals in their deen, and not let them be complacent to just pray their 5 daily salah. We should give them hope that they will surpass us and be their future scholars and huffadh, and that their children will surpass them.

Alhamdulillah we started a new series for our Nasiha sessions today at the Mehron Nisa Women’s Centre. We will be taking a deep dive into Surah Yusuf and reflective on the many lessons to be taken from this Surah.

Today we reflected on the significance of the Quran being revealed in the Arabic language, and about the importance of learning Arabic. We discusssed some of the nuances which can only be understood through knowing the language. We also reflected on the importance of the Quran as our guidance, and that Allah gave the Quran as a clear guidance for us.

Alhamdulillah the Mehron Nisa Women’s Centre is a safe place to learn and ask questions.

As part of our Nasiha sessions, we have been going through lessons taken from Surah an-Nur. Umar Ibn al-Khattab (as) encouraged that women should be taught and learn Surah a -Nur.

There are so many lessons to take from this Surah SubhanAllah. This Surah touches on many rulings dealing with male-female interactions. Overall, we learn about the protective and preventative nature of the Islamic rulings through this Surah.

Looking forward to a new series.
