Edinburgh Castle — one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks, standing proudly on top of Castle Rock and overlooking the heart of Edinburgh. 🏴
The castle has played a central role in Scotland’s history for centuries. Castle Rock itself was occupied long before the medieval castle took shape, and over the years the fortress became a royal residence, military stronghold and symbol of Scottish power.
Kings and queens once lived within these walls, including Mary, Queen of Scots, who gave birth to James VI here in 1566. He would later become James I of England, uniting the crowns of Scotland and England.
Because of its strategic position, Edinburgh Castle was repeatedly attacked, besieged and captured during conflicts between Scotland and England. It became one of the most contested strongholds in British history.
Today, the castle is home to the Honours of Scotland — the Scottish Crown Jewels — as well as the famous Stone of Destiny, both deeply connected to the history of the Scottish monarchy.
From high above, the scale of the fortress and its dramatic position on the volcanic rock become even more impressive. Surrounded by Edinburgh’s historic Old Town and stretching views across the city, it is easy to understand why this place has remained such a powerful symbol of Scotland for hundreds of years.
One of my favourite aerial views from Scotland.
