Being a freelancer since 2020 has been an incredible journey of growth and learning, but finding opportunities to connect with like-minded people and step out of my home office (the sofa) has become a key focus for me in 2024.

Instagram Broadcast Channels - Are you using them yet? 🤔

A little round-up to get you started 👇

1: First of all, it’s important you make sure your first message outlines the perks or benefits followers can expect by joining your channel. This way, you'll not only get them to join but also set the stage for the value you'll be providing from there.

2: Use it to learn about your audience and use polls to gauge interest in potential new services or future artist bookings. For example, if you're considering which DJ will convert to ticket sales, simply run a poll and see if your preferred artist stands. Adding a menu item?... Ask your followers which they prefer.

3: Grow your Instagram audience by using the channel to showcase behind-the-scenes content, special offers, or exclusive previews of upcoming events to encourage people to join. You have to be a follower to join the channel, so this is the time to grow. Remember, keep it exclusive - don’t be tempted to follow up elsewhere!

4: Creators can invite other creators to participate in their broadcast channel. Why not interview an upcoming artist who is playing at your event or give a fan the opportunity to join in on the conversation by running a competition outside of the app, which in turn will grow your channel 🤷‍♀️

Followers will receive a one-time notification to join your channel, and then it’s over to you… One way you can promote your Broadcast Channel is by using the ‘join channel’ sticker in your Stories to remind existing and new followers of your channel. From there, you can link in with your usual newsletter and social media strategy over time to keep the momentum going.

There's certainly a lot going on over on Instagram at the moment! 🤓

One of the recent news updates is that you don't need to use all 30 hashtags for success. Instagram have been advising users on calls about best practice on the site - although, it turns out that some people are getting slightly different advice each time 🤷🏻‍♀️

It seems that it's not a bad thing to post between 8-15 hashtags and get good results, with a small number of those being repeated on each post to give your content a recognisable persona.

I think the key here is that hashtags need to hone in on who the post is for and that you should keep testing and see what works for you. The advice could be to stop the overuse of random tags that do not suit posts, which can only be a good thing. I have had great results with 30 in the past, but I'll be testing out less over the coming weeks to see if it makes a difference.

Running ads on Facebook and Instagram is a brilliant way to build brand awareness and boost sales. Here are five important things you need to get right so that your ads have the best chance of success 👇🏻

1. You know what you’re selling, who you’re selling it to - and why they want it

Sounds obvious, right? But you need to have a very clear goal in mind to get good results from Facebook ads.

Without a clear picture of who your ideal customer is, you won’t be able to target your ads effectively.

2. Consistent and confident organic social

Paying for ads doesn’t get you out of posting regularly on your Facebook and Instagram accounts. Organic engagement gives Facebook data about who your people are.

You can specifically target your FB and Insta fans and followers with ads; or use them to ask FB to find a lookalike audience of the people who already know you and love you.

It’s a complementary relationship between organic and paid social, so get them working together.

3. A great landing page

Before you even think about spending money on ads, you need to consider where those ads are going to send people.

The web page they land on has to give them what they need to see. It may take a small investment of time and money to get your web pages right, but it will stop you from wasting £££ on your ad spend.

4. Pixel

First things first, you need a pixel. It’s a short piece of code that goes on your website header and allows Facebook to track your site visitors. It means you can ask Facebook to show your ad to your website visitors, or the people most like them.

5. A great deal of patience

Typically it takes about 12 weeks for the algorithm to learn where and when to show your ads and how to find the people who will provide the results you’re asking for.

This will involve you testing different audiences, different ad formats, images, copy and calls to action.

You may see good results sooner, but generally, success requires both testing and time.

A good ads strategist will put in the groundwork to set your ads up for success – saving you valuable time and money in the long run. When they start to run and test ads, you’ll be on firm ground, making the process quicker, clearer and much cheaper.

They’ll find new customers.

A good ads manager will put a lot of time into researching and building the right audiences for your ads. First, they’ll look at ‘warm’ audiences and then they’ll create ‘prospecting’ audiences to seek out completely new customers, wherever they may be.

They’ll bring back lost customers.

Ads managers will retarget customers who leave precious goods languishing in their basket – and the ones who got to your landing page and didn’t sign up – and give them a good reason to take action. They’ll round up lost customers and bring them back where they belong! 👀

Your ads manager will test different images, headlines, copy and calls to action. They’ll also compare different audiences. This enables them to find the most cost-effective ways of reaching the right people and getting them to take the actions you want them to take.
