University strikes which were set to continue throughout February have been called off.

The decision to pause industrial action across Liverpool universities was made after teaching union the UCU reported on making ‘significant progress on a range of issues.’

These include levelling pay gaps, reducing workloads, and setting of time limits for negotiations on tackling casual contracts.

February strikes have been paused, however the UCU emphasises this is to allow ongoing negotiations to take place.

The UCU have also confirmed that strikes happening in March will still be going ahead on the 16th, 17th, 20th, 21st and 22nd.

Saira Weiner, Union representative told Merseynewslive: “Nobody wants to take strike action. We care about our students, we care about higher education. But we’ve been left with no alternative to make changes.

"We’ve had a 25% pay cut before this dispute started since 2009 and now with inflation, food prices have been going up by 17%.

"We’re effectively working for more than two days a week for free.”

The UCU announced: “Before going into details of the progress we have made, we want to make it absolutely clear that this is simply a pause.

"And alongside this, we will be continuing with the campaign to deliver another massive YES vote in the re-ballot.”

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Liverpool to show their support for refugees.

The protest included a line-up of performances and speeches, one of the speakers being activist and writer Chantelle Lunt.

Former leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn was part of the event.

He said: “It’s about uniting people together, it’s about exciting a young generation of what can be achieved in the future. That’s why our demonstrations are important, because they bring us together.”

People were seen with signs in support of refugees and asylum seekers.

Jeremy Corbyn talked about recent events in Knowsley when there were violent clashes outside the Suites Hotel housing asylum seekers.

Describing the events as "horrible" he said: "We’re responding here in Liverpool today in solidarity.”

He also discussed the mental health crisis in England today, citing faults in the education and housing systems.

Before the protest, a handful of counter-protesters were seen, some of them in masks, filming and arguing with protesters. Police intervention quickly broke up the conflict.

One protester, Abbie, 26, said: “It was a really good turnout which was great to see.

"I felt that it was really positive."

Speaking of the counter-protesters who arrived at the scene, she said: “I was worried maybe it could’ve turned a bit violent or hostile, but they were really outnumbered.

"They were kind of far away so it was managed and totally safe.”
