After her defeat in this week's Shetland North by-election, Natasha Cornick (Independent) has said that she plans to contest the ward again at the next election, something that hopefully increases the chances of a contested vote in Shetland North in 2027.

Gerry McGarvey - Labour's candidate for Orkney and Shetland in the 2015 UK general election - is also the Depute Leader of Stirling Council.

Apparently contesting Orkney and Shetland is a great way for Scottish Labour politicians to succeed in local politics!

Conor Savage has been elected Edinburgh's new councillor for the Colinton / Fairmilehead ward. That name might be familiar to Orcadians and Shetlanders, as he was the Labour candidate for Orkney and Shetland in last year's UK general election.

By Shetland's standards - or really, anywhere in Scotland - the by-election landslides since 2022 have been remarkable.

Winning candidate vote shares in by-elections:

North Isles 2022 (Robert Thomson): 68.6%
Shetland West 2022 (Mark Robinson): 76.4%
Shetland North 2025 (Andrew Hall): 90.4%

Shetland Islands Council, Shetland North by-election results:

Andrew Hall: 90.4%
Natasha Cornick: 9.6%

Turnout: 39.6%

The highest turnout was in Brae (40.4%) while the lowest turnout was in Mossbank (24.3%).

I believe the ballots were counted by hand, so there may not be any additional data available on the results.

Andrew Hall (Independent) has won the Shetland North by-election in a landslide, securing 90.4% of the vote against Natasha Cornick's (Independent) 9.6%.

I believe this is the highest vote share a candidate has ever won in the Shetland Islands Council's history.

Polls are open for the Shetland North by-election and will close at 10pm.

Votes will be counted tomorrow morning and we should know the result by mid day.

There are two candidates contesting the election: Natasha Cornick (Ind) and Andrew Hall (Ind).
