Snake Oil Music News Snake Oil Music News was launched to cover all aspects of the indie Rock'N'Roll scene. Welcome To Snake Oil Music News! Keep It Snake Oil.

Snake Oil Music News was launched on 8th October 2019 after Founder and Owner “Jordan Williams” was going to so many gigs and festivals totalling up 168 gigs, 9 Festivals and 5 Big Outdoor gigs in one year while posting little write up reviews on his personal page. After huge demand from family and friends telling me to start up my own music page/blog I decided to bite the bullet and give

it a go and Snake Oil Music News was born after being named after “Foals” tune called “Snake Oil”. We attend any gig no matter how big or small the venue or how well known or unknown the band we feel everyone deserves a chance to get recognised we believe that Rock ‘N’ Roll guitar music isn't dead you've just got to dig that extra bit deeper to find these underground bands and when we do watching them grow is in our eyes the best feeling ever. We review everything to do with music from Singles, EPs, Albums and of course the live gigs, were based in Leicester but manage to get round the country seeing live bands week in week out, from being in Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester Birmingham and London. After recruiting filmmaker and photographer Rob O’Brien towards the end of last year, we also now get out and about interviewing some class bands for the page to get them some recognition we feel their deserve. so far we’ve had the like of “The Luka State” “Gazelle” and “The K’s” alongside many more where you can find on our page and YouTube channel called “Snake Oil Music News”. We’ve also started to putting on our own Events on down “The Cookie” in Leicester where we will get up and coming bands from around the country a chance to get out of their home town or city to come to a place where they've never played or been before to give them a chance to break out and branch out to wider parts of the county. Our debut show was headlined by “The Magic Mod” with supports from Nottingham singer/songwriter “Louis Croft” and hometown hero “Ryan Dunn” from “Gazelle” with the aim to put on an event once a month for the people of Leicester to come down experience new bands new music, meet like minded people and more importantly just to have a great night.

Liam Gallagher & John Squire

I remember being asked years ago “Who would you have in your 90’s rock n roll supergroup”?

My selection included both Liam Gallagher and John Squire, So I was delighted when I heard these two legends were collaborating.

I have read other reviews on this album which basically describe it as same old stuff, What did you expect?, If you buy a tin of white paint it’s gonna contain white paint it’s not going to be any other colour. The point I’m making is if you buy Liam Gallagher and John squires album you know what you are going to get.

Each tune has the unmistakable Liam Gallagher sneer intertwined with the ingenious guitar shrill from John Squire, Some of the outros are that typical stone roses elongated guitar solos where quite clearly John gets lost in the moment.

Highlights for me were just another rainbow and Mars to Liverpool There is a couple of ‘fillers’in there which was disappointing but on the whole it’s a good (not great) album
You can’t help thinking Is it oasis with a better guitarist Or Stone Roses with a more dinstinctive singer?

There are hints of the past throughout the album and you can hear each of the influences .

At the end of the day there are no surprises you are gonna get exactly what it says or the tin, I thought it was good but then I went into listening to this album knowing that I wasn’t going to get anything groundbreaking or new just more of the thing that I love.

Would I like to see a second album?

No I dont think so,it’s done,it was good but let’s leave it there.

Brave Liaison - “Swallowed”

Cambridge alternative rock quartet Brave Liasion have released their last way single “Swallowed” which came out on Friday 23rd February and is now available to listen on all streaming platforms

Formed in 2018 consisting of Tom Lumley - vocals / guitars, Jake Day - guitars
Billy Stewart - bass and Jonny Thompson - drum this band don’t need any introduction when it comes to the music scene as anthemic sound and high-powered live show has landed them some pretty Big gigs pulling in big crowds at festivals such as
Isle of Wight, Camden Rocks and Truck Festival.

The band have been on the upward rise ever since releasing their first but if music back in 2019 With sold out tour dates up and down the country it’s no surprise Brave Liasion have been spotlighted by Radio 1, BBC Introducing, Radio X, and Kerrang!

After releasing their EP “Will This Hold Together?” which followed their debut album “Everything’s Affected” that went to chart at #9 in the Official Rock and Metal Chart in the UK, the boys are back with new music in 2024 with their latest single “Swallowed”.

Humanity is on the verge of collapse; climate change, pollution, war, deforestation, forest fires and a seemingly endless display of capitalist greed. 'Swallowed' questions whether we’ve gone past the turning point and have sealed our fate to be engulfed by the elements which grow ever more extreme.

“Swallowed” is another big kick ass tune from the lads doing exactly what they created the band for Big Riffs, Heavy Breakdowns and Cathy powerful choruses destined for them big festival appearances in the summer.

I’ve been with this band from the start and I feel they genuinely get better and better with each release they’ve got a back catalogue of anthems and just when I feel that they’ve reached their peak they come back with another huge track and raise the bar once again, this one’s for the pit for sure.

Frontman of the band Tom Lumley went on to say the following.

"We felt like 'Swallowed' was our best work to date when we wrote the song and wanted to be sure we went into the studio with someone who grasped the song, it’s message and our sound as a band. We felt Tom Mitchener did exactly that and we couldn't be happier with the outcome. We hope the world can resonate with the song like we do and take note of the reality around us.

Emily 7 - “There There”

Dublin indie alternative trio Emily 7 have released their latest single “There There” which came out on Friday 23rd February and is now available to listen on all streaming platforms.

The track will see the bands first release since 2021 and will include a brand new line up of Daniel Clarke on Vocals and Guitar, Brandon Carrig on Lead Guitar, and Scott Bellew on Drums as they enter a new era of the band moving forward as a 3 piece.

“There There” is the first release off the bands debut EP ‘IT WAS FUN UNTIL WE HAD TO DO IT’ released independently through self-funded avenues and will be released later in the year.

Recorded at Darklands, Dublin where the likes of Fontaines DC, Denzel Curry and Damien Dempsey have all been to record, “There There” is a very grungy dark track that sets the tone of the new era of the band going into a new style and direction with their music with loud distorted guitars and pounding drums with big breakdowns and catchy choruses.

Frontman if the band Daniel Clarke went onto say the following.

“‘There There’ is everything to us, we knew it from the first time we played it. It was a unanimous head nod that this is what we do and ultimately this is who we are, and it sounds like a fu***ng jet engine.”

Follow the band on all socials to follow all the latest news regarding shows and the upcoming debut EP.

Ed Cosens - “SuckerPunch”

Sheffield singer/songwriter Ed Cosens has released his latest single “Sukerpunch” which was released on Friday 23rd February on all streaming platforms.

Ed Cosens is the long-time co-songwriter and chief lieutenant to Jon McClure in Reverend & The Makers, and former bandmate of Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and Matt Helders. Now he has found his own voice as a singer of his own beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant songs that tap into the human condition with the skill of a seasoned balladeer.

Ed’s solo debut album, Fortune’s Favour released back in 2021 gained good reviews in outlets such as Uncut and guitar.com despite being released in the lockdown days
and not promoted as widely as intended due to restrictions, Ed is back for another go with his second album “Somewhere Between Dark And Light” which is released later in the year.

“Sukerpunch” is the second single to be released from the upcoming album and follows Doghouse, a song for anyone who has ever found themselves relegated to the couch.

“Suckerpunch” is yet again another blissful and peaceful track by Ed his songwriting and lyrics are just next level combined with a great mixture of sounds with the highlight of the piano bringing this track to be one of the best he’s released, we’re looking forward to this ride and excited for this brand new album of his.

His forthcoming second album offers a similarly immediate variety of classic songwriting, this time delving into more personal territory for inspiration.

Ed went on to say the following about the latest single

“Sometimes you find yourself in situations completely out of your control, the effects of which you just don’t see coming,” says Cosens, explaining the meaning of Suckerpunch. “Whether it’s your mental state, a relationship, or the consequences of a series of terrible decisions, sometimes the first response is to bury your head in the sand and sleep walk into a bad situation that could have been avoided. The issue is that even with your eyes open, you can’t always do anything about it. Which is worse?”

Matt McManamon Music - “Told You Before (I Won’t Tell You Again)

Liverpudlian-Irish singer-songwriter Matt McManamon has released his latest single
“Told You Before (I Won’t Tell You Again)”
Which came out on Friday 23rd February and is now available to listen on all streaming platforms.

Former Frontman of the band The Dead 60’s who over their years active went onto support the likes of Morrissey, Kasabian and The Coral has ventured off into a solo project since calling time on the band in 2008.

Matt released his debut solo album “Scally Folk” which was released via Fretsore Records in 2021 was received to critical acclaim and supported by the likes of BBC Introducing, Metro, Irish Daily Mail, Louder Than War and RTE Radio 1.

After a year or so out of the game Matt McManamon is back with the release of his latest single “Told You Before (I Won’t Tell You Again)” which will feature on his
upcoming 4 track EP called “Seventy Two Hours” due out for release on March 29th on Fretsore Records.

“Told You Before (I Won’t Tell You Again)” Is a track with a lovely bop that’s bound to get your toes tapping, with great chord progression and choruses.

Matt McManamon went on to say the following.

“Told You Before (I Won’t Tell You Again)” is probably the hardest sounding song I have ever done. I think I was channelling my inner Pete Townshend of The Who when writing this one.

The song subject primarily deals with indecisiveness and my (sometimes) lack of empathy with indecisive individuals.”

Cast - “Love Is The Call”

Before I started listening to this I said a little prayer to the music Gods which went something like this “Dear Gods of music, please don’t let this be rubbish”
My prayers were thankfully answered.

Cast, for me we’re in the top 10 most influential bands of the Brit pop era which I was so privileged to have lived through. I think for legendary bands like Cast ,If you make a comeback it has to be at least on equal par to the past or better otherwise that legendary status is in danger of being diluted. A lot of bands make that costly mistake, Well it’s certainly at least on equal par to the past.

As soon as John Power starts to sing I start to time travel back to the 90’s when life was simple and music was the most important thing in my life.It was the only thing that mattered.

The warm familiarity brings me comfort and a mind full of the best memories. It’s so nostalgic and people of my generation will appreciate this, The songs are typical Cast, uplifting, melodic and distinctive. If I heard it on the radio I would instantly recognise it was Cast.

It’s not going to break any records or charts because music has moved on but for oldies like me it’s a trip down memory lane. Had they released this at the height of their career it would have further endorsed their legendary status.

Is it revolutionary?… No

Not everything has to be pioneering sometimes you just need music to give you a warm hug and tell you everything is going to be alright, Right now I think the world could use that.

slumclub - “Pinky”

Burton on Trent alternative rock quartet Slumclub have released their latest single “Pinky” which came out on Friday 23rd February and is now available on all streaming platforms.

Formed in late 2022 consisting of Connor Curran on vocals, Huw Griffiths on guitar, Conal Morton on Bass and Kyle Munsie on drums The band are combined with sounds inspired by the likes of Pixies and Idles like presence, expect to be rattled by guitar driven riffs, bouncing drums, harmonic yet dirty baseline topped off by uncompromising vocals and presence.

Having already released 2 previous stomper tracks in “Hey You” and “Bottom Of A Cheque” in 2023 the boys are back in 2024 to complete their hat trick as they release their third single “Pinky”

“Pinky” is a blistering track full of Anger and rage with catchy powerful riffs, badass baseline and heavy breakdowns this one’s for the pit where we can see it’s going to be a lively point in the bands set as this one builds up to pure utter chaos.

The band are growing far and wide getting their name on the map for their aggressive punk style approach to music and with this track I’m fully aware people are going to get fully behind them and so they should this is an absolute banger of a track, Short but sweet and straight to the point.

Frontman of the band Connor Curran went on to say the following.

“Our third track 'Pinky' themes and stems from information overload and the tendency to over share when sometimes you have enough going on in your head, without having other peoples problems being unburdened. Musically, there are influences from the likes of Softplay and Idles.”

With a strong start to 2024 this is a band you need to keep on your radar if their not already, the band have loads of shows lined up around the East Midlands so make sure you follow the band on all socials to keep upto date with the latest announcements and get down and see what their about.

The Now - “Truth Always Comes Out In The End”

South Wales 4 piece The Now have released their latest single “Truth Always Comes Out In The End” which was released on Friday 16th February and is now available to listen on all streaming platforms.

Consisting of Shane (lead vocals/guitar), Callum Bromage (guitar/vocals), Jay Evans on (bass/vocals), Will Scott (drums) the energetic 4 piece have been making waves in the industry forever growing their fanbase to a wider audience and gaining recognition
From the likes of Planet Rock Radio and BBC Radio 2 who all want to get a piece of the action of one of the best live bands around today putting on some of the best Rock’N’Roll shows the game has ever seen.

The boys have now kick started their year with a massive campaign ahead releasing their latest single “Truth Always Comes Out In The End” recorded at Real World Studios and produced by Grammy Award winning Oli Jacobs.

“Truth Always Comes Out In The End” is a phenomenal and exciting piece of work leaving me wanting to hear more from this era of the band, The new tune is a catchy, synth and guitar driven R’N’R Anthem destined to be played on the big stadium stages, it’s loud, it’s powerful it really is a piece of art.

Frontman if the band Shane Callaghan went on to say the following.

“It’s about the upper classes and the political elite using the working class as pawns for their own game. We as individuals will never have the power to override their demands and as a working class group we depend on the truth of their actions to come out and bring them down.”

The conversation provoking track is taken from their much awaited and highly dynamic debut album ‘Too Hot To Handle’ set for release March 1 via Trew Music.

Having supported the likes of Reef, Florence Black and shared the stage with heroes in Placebo, Noel Gallagher, Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes, The year ahead is finely poised with their headline album launch show at O2 Academy 2 Islington on Thursday March 7 2024.

Unreal track lads this Debut album sounds absolutely massive.

PET NEEDS - “Intermittent Fast Living”

What the hell has happened this week! ...I’ll tell you what’s happened Pet Needs have a top ten album that’s all.

Four lads from Colchester with a dream are making that dream a reality. They are locals to me and I can honestly say they appear to be one of the most hard working bands and their success is well deserved. They have been innovate in their delivery of live shows and are some of the nicest lads in the industry.

Their army of fans (the fractured party people) are right behind them which has been key to their success.

The album itself it’s a joyful insight into the highs and lows of a touring band, The lyrics are honest and well delivered by Jonny and there is a sincere honesty in the songs.

The opening to the album is a spoken word modern poem that is a great introduction to what this album is all about.

I love the fact there are reference to his home town and even his dog throughout the album, This adds to the charm.

The album gets better and better as you make your way through the tracks, They are well produced but still have that lovable simplicity. The music is as honest and true as the lyrics… It’s a masterpiece.

However, I’m (or was) a hardcore punk enthusiast and the word punk gets batted around quite often, It’s not what I call punk, I think this crosses a few genres and will appeal to a wide audience, Well it already has to be fair(Number 7 in the album chart).

I could imagine this being the soundtrack to ‘punk the Westend musical’ You can have that idea lads no need to credit me
A good friend once said to me “music should be uplifting and make you happy” Intermittent Fast Living made me happy.

What if this album got to number 1, I wonder if the snake oil massive can make this happen. They get a number 1 album and you get a masterpiece, sounds a good deal to me, Let’s help these boys out, it’s available on the usual platform.

IDLES - “Tangk”

The angry Bristolians are back with their latest offering Tangk (although they are not as angry this time). This album is more about love and pain. I’ve been a fan on idles from the start and thought that brutalist and joy is an act of resistance were groundbreaking then it seemed to slide a bit with Ultra Mono and Crawler.

The opening track (idea 01) was a surprising soft and dare I say it beautiful track, The bass drum sounding like a heart beat and the atmospheric guitar and piano provide a meandering backdrop, I couldnt help but think that this song was gonna have a violent end but it never happened.

The album sounds like the guitarists have bought some new guitar pedals and cranked them up to 10. The drums and bass solid as ever as you would expect from any Idles tracks.

Joe Talbots vocals are smooth and polished and very different from the early days, There is an evident different feel to the vocals and lyrics, Great but lacking the venom that previous Idles albums once had.

Joe has obviously grown into a better singer and sings in a comfortable range, but wasn’t Idles all about the passion and not perfection, I can’t help feeling that the unique selling point of Idles has all but gone and they’ve now become composers of the mediocre. Going to see Idles live was all about the experience and the in your face attitude, I’m struggling to see how the diehard crowd of Idle fans are gonna take to this.

The album is soft and nice, but other bands do this better,I want Idles to be Idles, however you have to evolve or you disappear. This album may attract a new kind of Idles fan and if that was the plan then it’s working.

I think my missus might even like it

So my overall opinion is it’s alright ,there are glimpses of what I originally liked about Idles and “Hall and Oates “ wouldn’t be out of place on brutalist or Joy is an act of resistance. Any one looking for the mosh pit at gigs might be disappointed (unless they play the old stuff)

It’s Idles evolving into a more commercially accepted and appealing to a bigger fan base. That’s a shame

Although the Idles novelty was wearing thin so now is the time to evolve. Yeah it’s a good as a stand alone album, I did stick on brutalist after listening to Tangk just to remind myself of the good ol’ days and cleanse my soul.

Well done Idles for stepping out of the comfort zone and doing something a bit different.
