ARISE

ARISE Arise was born out of a need to highlight the under representation of black women in the creative industry.

Together we aim to uplift and raise awareness of relevant issues through various forms of creative content generation.

Today is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. We mark this day to remember and honour those who came before us and had to fight for their freedom.

For this we are showcasing Lorraine Pryce. Who is a West Yorkshire based doula, photographer, doula mentor and birth activist. Her project ‘do you see me now’ started out as a way to celebrate black and brown women and birthing people. This project raises awareness and confronts the statistics that these women and birthing people are 3 times more likely to die in the prenatal period. Lorraine uses photography to embrace the power of birth and the realities of real life questioning “what if the world saw all of us not just our skin? what would the narrative be?”

In these images Lorraine captures moments of transformation and little moments that soon become memories, her raw photos are real and unscripted with the aim not to disturb but to memorialise. Her own journey taught her how important it is to be heard, informed, and empowered.

The topic of the black birthing experience, is something we don’t take lightly here at Arise. Black women in the UK four times more likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth, we have raised this issue before and even have a podcast speaking about Systematical racism in healthcare.
However it was lovely to see and exhibit at of Do you see me? A celebration of powerful and beautiful parents. From pregnancy to birth to the first moments of life. As well as exploring the idea of embracing our power to birth. Beautiful
