We are officially 150 years old!

Tonight rehearsals resumed for our March concert in the Old Kirk.

The origins of the orchestra in Victorian times and its rehearsal space are currently unknown but in 1875, in our current home, the minister was a Rev. Mark J Bryson.

Happy New Year to all our followers. 2025 will be a very special one for the Orchestra with rehearsals resuming on Tuesday 7th January for our 150th Anniversary celebrations.

Many of our sections are full but we’d especially love to welcome lower brass and percussion.

There are no auditions but players are recommended to have a minimum ability of grade five. If you are interested in joining the orchestra, please email ahead to avoid disappointment and to allow us to prepare music for you.

Thanks to all who joined us for some festive cheer this afternoon.

Celebrating 150 years of KOS is special for all of us in the orchestra, and I sure past members too. Our resident composer, John Gourlay composed two of the Scottish pieces in todays concert, one of which features Scottish Gaelic - maybe a first for the orchestra. Direach sgoinneil!

With 10 days to go, the countdown to Christmas is properly underway.

Our Celebrations kick off earlier than our first concert as we are thrilled to share the news that our John Gourlay's 'The Baptism of Adam Smith' is the joint winner of the Making Music (National Federation of Music Societies) 2024 Best Music Creator along with a composition by Roderick Williams.

This is a huge achievement on a UK nationwide scale.

Our huge congratulations to John for this achievement. We wouldn’t be where we are today without John's creativity and compositional skills in crafting music for us to perform.

Thanks also go to the Trustees of the Old Kirk and Fife Council who commissioned the work which we performed twice at our October 2023 concert.

Just over a week until the start of our anniversary season with the first rehearsal on Tuesday 13th August. Rehearsals are held at The Old Kirk, Kirkcaldy from 6:45pm - 9:15pm

If you would like to join the orchestra, there are no auditions but a playing ability of around grade five minimum would be helpful.

Fife's Community Orchestra, Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society, always welcomes new members and players, and as a prelude to the new season (starting on 13th August 2024) is holding an OPEN EVENING on Tuesday 4th June 2024 at its base, Kirkcaldy's Old Kirk in Kirk Wynd. KOS is open to all players without any audition (with any necessary restrictions on some woodwind and brass only due to balance) and this event allows new players to try out some music and sample the atmosphere.

Of course the event is open to current KOS members by providing a summer term opportunity for them to keep the dust off their instruments while inviting any players in the area to join in. Could be some who haven't played for a long time, could be a new arrival in the area, could be young players setting out on the path of musical life, in fact, anyone at all with an orchestral instrument.

While the event is primarily for players, interested non-players can attend on the understanding that it is neither a performance nor a concert. KOS always needs new blood especially Front of House. Potential volunteers and helpers may appear from any interest shown in attending.

The PLACE: The Old Kirk, Kirkcaldy, KY1 1EH; the DATE: Tuesday 4th June 2024; the TIME: 6.45 pm (until 9 pm); the COST: £3.
Bring your instrument and a stand, music will be provided. There will be pieces to challenge and pieces to enjoy, some easy items for anyone unsure of their abilities. One or two of the pieces may feature in the Orchestra's 2024/25 season so a sneak preview will be on offer.

The orchestra is preparing a great variety of music at our Extra Concert next month, some old, some brand new.

The horn section features in a World Premiere of a piece called ‘Persephone.’
