Located just outside Hunstanton, the six-hectare Ringstead Downs reserve is one of the largest remaining areas of chalk grassland in the county.

Along with being a rambler’s paradise, there’s evidence that the downs were used as a burial site during the early Bronze Age, unlike other locations in Norfolk, where barrows and burial sites dating from this period have been wiped away by cultivation of the land.

Because Ringstead Downs has never been ploughed or farmed due to its steep sides, it gives archaeologists and historians a chance to better understand the funeral practices that took place between 2500 BC and 2000 BC and offers a glimpse of what our countryside might have looked like centuries ago. 📜

Once a hub for turning bones from local slaughterhouses and whaling into fertiliser, Narborough Bone Mill is the last surviving site of its kind in Norfolk. Transported by barge along the River Nar, the bones came from South Lynn’s blubber-processing factory.

Restored by passionate owners and volunteers, the mill features a 16-foot water wheel, underground sluices, and fascinating artefacts. Discover more about this unique heritage site in your November/December edition of KL Magazine - link in bio, or visit www.bonemill.org.uk.
