In every region of the world, LGBTIQ+ people are routinely denied their rights to freedom, safety, and equality. They may face pervasive discrimination, experience intolerable acts of violence that go unpunished, and lack access to justice. These experiences cannot be separated from struggles they may also face on account of other intersecting identities.
Throughout this yearโs moments of collective crisis, celebration, and all that is in between, LGBTIQ+ activists have continued to fight against inequalities, anchored in and strengthened by the work of Black people, Indigenous people, and people of colour, to push for a safer, more equal world.
So, in honour of their fight and in time for this year'sย International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobiaย (#IDAHOBIT), celebrated on the 17th May, UN Women shared with us the voices of eight LGBTIQ+ activists sharing their stories of resisting, supporting, and healing.

4 Ways to Reduce Plastic Pollution
A whopping 8 million tons of plastic winds up in the ocean each year, endangering wildlife and polluting ecosystems. This number is expected to grow โ a recent report from The Pew Charitable Trusts suggests that without improvements to #wastemanagement, 90 million tons of plastic could enter the worldโs aquatic ecosystems by 2030. Plastics have even been found in peopleโs bodies and in the air.
The problem has only worsened during the #COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the necessary increase of single-use plastics for personal protective equipment (PPE) like face masks and shields, some governments and businesses have delayed or scrapped plastic bags and packaging bans. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, World Resources Institute and UN Environment Programme found that more than 100 countries regulated #singleuseplasticbags.
While the increased use of plastic is necessary to fight the pandemic, particularly for #PPE, countries need to ensure these emergency changes do not derail long-term progress on the passage of laws aimed at reducing plastic pollution. If countries want to build back better after COVID-19, legislative reform on curbing plastic waste is an essential part of the agenda.

Could a hybrid institution, one modelled after the European Commission, anchored in the UN system, yet which is much stronger than the UN, enable us to reach a more sustainable world?
Impakter's Senior Editor, Claude Forthomme, draws upon her 25-year career working with the UN and FAO, as she shares her (non) modest proposal for a Sustainable World Commission (CSW).
Highlighting lessons learnt from the United Nations and the European Union, Forthomme makes a convincing argument for the government's potential role in society as a driver of innovationโinspired by Mariana Mazzucato's claim that โonly government has the capacity to bring about transformation on the scale needed," in her recently published book Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism.
As well as exploring the features of a Sustainable World Commission and explaining how such an institution would enable us to move toward the SDG's, Forthomme also analyses the potential obstacles which could arise in making a CSW a reality.
