Lighting a live Saturday morning show that lasts two and a half hours and consists of multiple elements is always a challenge. One minute you're dealing with modelling and catch lights; then you're choreographing the lights to a music performance; then you have adhoc setups and positions thrown at you with little or no warning, all of which need to be lit and look good. It's the attention to detail that makes the difference and having a great team around you.

After nearly 40 years of lighting stage, TV and live events, my favourite lamp is still the good old tungsten fresnel, so named after the French bloke, Augustin-Jean Fresnel, who partly designed it and then went on to develop it, originally for use in lighthouses. Nothing quite compares and it's been a staple diet of the film and TV world for many decades.

Past and present... working in the studio in Glasgow I found my old lighting desk from 24 years ago... been stuck in the back of a cupboard for many years but it still works..! I did some fabulous shows on that desk... Flying Pig Systems Whole Hog 2 in the foreground circa 1998 and a Compulite Vector currently in use in the background.
