Michael Flanagan Director to Helm 'Radical New Take' on Blumhouse Productions' The ExorcistMike Flanagan, who is well-known for his work on "Doctor Sleep" and other critically acclaimed horror films, has formally committed to helming and producing a new Exorcist movie for Blumhouse and Morgan Creek. The planned trilogy was strategically rethought in the wake of "The Exorcist: Believer"'s underwhelming 2023 premiere.
The film "Believer," directed by David Gordon Green, was abandoned in January 2024, so Blumhouse brought in Flanagan to provide a new vision.Flanagan conveyed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the chance to work with Blumhouse again and produce something unique. His prior work with Blumhouse includes the critically acclaimed horror flicks "Oculus" (2013), "Hush" (2016), and "Ouija: Origin."
Along with his critically praised Netflix programs like "Midnight Mass" and "The Haunting of Hill House," Flanagan is as well-known for his adaptations of Stephen King works.Blumhouse co-founder Jason Blum expressed his excitement about collaborating with Flanagan once more and expressed his desire for viewers to witness this fresh interpretation of the Exorcist series. "The Exorcist: Believer" was supposed to be the first in a new film series, but its unfavorable reviews put an end to that idea.
Even with franchise veterans Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair in it, the movie only received a 22% Rotten Tomatoes rating. With the cancellation of "The Exorcist: Deceiver," Flanagan's next movie is not a follow-up to "The Exorcist: Believer," but rather a "new story set in The Exorcist universe." It's still unclear if Flanagan's film will make mention to the 2023 picture's events or if Burstyn and Blair will return to their legendary roles. The Exorcist series' next part was originally scheduled for release on April 18, 2025, however given recent events, this date may change.
