A very Happy Birthday to Jake, Sue , Ellen and all the team at WNYC in New York today - 100 yers old. What an amazing milestone for the NPR station in Municipal Building on Hudson Square. Still pounding out on 820AM (and some FMs too plus Sirius). One of the real nuggets of the New York broadcast scene.
BE are bringing their long awaited MDCL+ to market which can save tens of thousands a year in power costs on all makes of transmitter. It reduces power when mod' is louder and vice versa. The louder program content masks the added noise. It needs careful adjustment, which any good consulting engineer will get right. Up to 50% of power bills is claimed , and it takes only half a rack with no effect your coverage.
58 years ago this afternoon, RADIO 270 began programmes from off Scarborough. Roger Gale, the outgoing MP for Herne Bay, played the first record - Wild Thing, by The Troggs. Taylor Swift is getting her own national DAB station, also available ONLINE to mobile & speakers, etc, to celebrate the UK legs of her 132 date tour. It gives Swifties, the chance to listen to their favourite artist all-day, every-day. It’s the first time in the UK that a national station has been dedicated to a single artist, although Bothe Caroline and Laser did long periods of testing with all-Beatles music.

Radio listeners in France can enjoy VIRGIN RADIO once again with the licence to use the name being taken up by Espace, who have replaced their VIRAGE ROCK network with it. It's on DAB+ and in most major cities and ONLINE everywhere. They use the same licensing agreement as in other countries to exploit the Virgin brand, with local operators marketing and programming the station, which also has fourteen subsidiary outlets including CLASSIQUE ROCK. Ooo La La!

It seems that I've become a museum piece! Some friends just spotted me at a Radio Caroline exhibit in the Cotswold Motor Museum. I love that sign - "Do not touch the DJ"!. So is that what happens when old DJs retire?

The latest World Radio Conference is underway in Dubai. This latest meeting of each country's regulators is deciding the fate of the UHF channels, now used for terrestrial TV. Should mobile phone operators be allowed access to it or should it remain in use for TV broadcasts? There is intense pressure to allow the march to 'online' to continue, UHF Txers made redundant and switched off. The ITU's WRC conference continues until mid-December.

SiriusXM made several new announcement in New York this week, including lower prices and a new logo. They had Shaggy and Kelly Clarkson on stage plus Dolly Parton and Smokey Robinson. Its iconic S still represents the Dog Star. They are introducing a new streaming experience and new guest DJ channel takeovers from over 160 top artists and bands, including Alice Cooper.

Tim Davie, the DG of the BBC, has announced to BBC staff this afternoon that the BBC will abandon all AM transmission at the end of December 2027 - i.e. Radio 5 and Radio 4 LW will both close and become FM or digital only. The love is part of a plan to save £500million, in a "Digital First" future for the BBC. It will also close Radio 4 Extra and the BBC4 TV channel, as well as some regional services. About 1000 jobs will be axed in the move.
The broadcast antennas of Russian State Radio in Transnistria (a breakaway part of Moldova) have been brought down in a missile attack at 7am this morning. Two huge explosions rocked the area and three masts and other infrastructure including the power transformers were destroyed. The underground transmitter hall which has around 2 megawatts of MW transmitters, is OK, but is still guarded by Militia.
The UK's DAB promotional body, Digital Radio UK, has been subsumed into the Radioplayer partnership, which promotes BBC and commercial radio's digital initiatives. Radioplayer is the body that ensures easy access to digital IP radio platforms. Radioplayers hopes this will strengthen links with European broadcasters, radio manufacturers and retails. (No mention of listeners!). Their goal is to The goal is “to promote the benefits of radio and audio, and the increased choice of services available.”
A report issued by DCMS today indicates that analogue FM transmissions will continue in the UK until the early 2030s and that broadcasters should start making plans to migrate AM services to digital in the mid 2020s. The five and ten year targets are not firm; the report says "Given the steady decline in AM listening generally, further retirement of AM services and decommissioning of AM sites is likely to continue irrespective of any regulatory intervention. In light of this, there is no need for regulatory intervention to set a single mandated AM switch-off date."
TikTok is setting up its own radio channel in collaboration with Pandora. It will be carried on the SiriusXM network from late July and features lots of new artistes,. Programmes will be hosted by DJs and influencers like Bella Poarch, Christian Shelton and Nick Tangorra.will also feature a weekly music countdown dedicated to TikTok’s trending tracks. Pandora is launching a TikTok Tastemakers series with exclusively hosted playlists featuring TikTok creators who will take listeners through their favorite songs with additional commentary. TikTok Tastemakers series will allow TikTok influencers to curate and promote playlists to their fans on TikTok.
The annual IBC, held each year in Amsterdam, has been put back to December. The focus for European radio and TV engineers, its been held at the RAI in Holland's biggest city for almost 20 years (before that it was in Brighton). Last month there was talk of moving the event to another location, but now the option to stay at the RAI . The 2021 event to be held from 3 to 6 December, will have a festival feel, with a large perimeter enabling attendees to move around more freely.
The French media regulator CSA has announced that the launch of national DAB+ services in France will take place in the Summer of 2021. The launches are due to take place simultneously, on Thursday 15 July. Installation of the transmitters and new aerials is commencing apace at the 25 main transmitter sites which will commence ttest transmissions from early June. The channels tol be used are indicated on the two maps above.
