Wishing a very happy 8th birthday to we are ma!

In August 2012, two guys with over 40 years of industry experience founded an agency. Their vision? To create a no-nonsense, fully transparent media and creative service for an eclectic mix of clients. Driven by a passion for what they do, Hertford-based agency Media Alive (today simply known as ma) are a client of mine and lovely people to work with.

If you’re a local business looking for support with branding, marketing, advertising or social media from creative concepts right through to delivery get in touch. The team at ma have all the experience of a top London full-service agency, coupled with the close personal approach that you’d expect from a small, boutique agency.

I hope you’re celebrating in style today guys! 🥂🎉🎈🎁

Happy Friday everyone!

Just a little reminder:

isn’t a trend - please keep on doing the work and learning how to be better allies.

It’s something very important to me, and should be for everyone who wants to live in an equal society.

A lovely selection of diverse children’s books on display at Leaf cafe! (and a little reminder that they have now reopened Mon-Fri 9am-3pm, Saturday 9am-4pm and Sunday 10am-3pm.)

It’s so important to follow through on what we say we are going to do now we are learning more about the Black Lives Matter movement. I’m really happy to see that even in a majority white town like people are starting to think and make changes.

Now Hertford people get down there and buy them all up!

Exciting news from Herts Black Lives Matter.

Our children are our future, and they are born completely unprejudiced - this is obvious from how they behave at a very young age; they don't pick their friends based on the colour of their skin, they're still unaware of the nuances in our society that uphold white supremacist structures.

However this slowly creeps into their unconscious as they grow, perhaps partly fuelled by our unwillingness, maybe inability, to address and discuss race.

Herts Black Lives Matter aim to provide resources and take workshops into schools. This is great news and I can't wait to find out more!

We’re excited to announce we now have goals we will keep working towards until they are achieved. Now our activism will increasingly be focused on education ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾

I’d like to talk about the fantastic Introduction to Aromatherapy online workshop I attended last month. It was led by Claire Blackie Aromatherapy; massage therapist, facialist, aromatherapist and Neal's Yard Remedies independent consultant.

Held via Zoom, Claire began the informal session with a very informative description of aromatherapy and how the oils are created. I’m a huge fan of Neal’s Yard products already but it was helpful to learn more about how they’re produced in a more sustainable and environmentally sound way than most other brands.

In the week before the workshop I received an exciting little package containing some sample oils which we would go on to guess during the evening session. I loved this part of the workshop, managing not to get any of them right but discovered a new scent that I’d not thought much about before and am now in love with!

Claire’s knowledge of the products, the essential oils properties and uses was immense, I made pages and pages of notes! She gave plenty of information about safety and how to use essential oils personally and in the home, as well as tips on use with children and pets.

She advised on blending and even creating your own products, explaining the maths behind the correct dilutions and finishing with safety warnings.

Claire usually works from her home in Nazeing as well as in Epping and at Secret Space in Hertford. Keep checking her Facebook and Instagram pages for news of her reopening.

She’s got two more workshops coming up this month: another Intro to Aromatherapy on Tuesday 14th July and Organic skincare on Tuesday 21st. Both take place in the evening, via Zoom. You have to sign up to get involved as places are limited.

This looks like a really useful zoom session organise by Herts Black Lives Matter this Thursday evening at 6.30pm.

I think a lot of us struggle to know how to articulate our feelings when we know something is wrong or racist and needs to be called out. Hopefully this consultation will give us clear and sensitive ways to be able to discuss this with non-black family members.

Remember Hertford, this is really important - we need to do the work.

🖤🖤🖤

Happy to announce that we will be having an online consultation that gives you the tools to talk about racism with your family. The zoom link will be shared near the time. Hope to see you!

Well done Herts Black Lives Matter for organising a fantastic and inspiring event today on Hartham Common.

Well done to all the wonderful speakers and performers who took part. There was beautiful singing, and very moving, inspiring speeches.

It was great to hear so many young voices sharing their stories, speaking about our hidden British history and answering some of the most common arguments against the need for the BLM movement and today’s event. Celebrating Marcus Rashford, Dianne Abbott and many, many others.

It was heart-warming to see such a large, peaceful crowd enjoying the show, listening respectfully to the speeches and, I hope, learning from the Herts Black Lives Matter collective.

These guys are awesome. They are leaders of a movement so necessary in our small majority-white town. They are the leaders of the future. I think we are going to see a lot more of them. Please make this a regular event in !

They have set up a Go Fund Me page to cover some of the costs of the showcase. If you enjoyed this afternoon and are able, please consider making a donation.

Absolute joy this weekend at Panshanger, in the woods. It’s all getting a bit much in this house, the intensely upsetting media images and reporting have taken their toll. Everyone has needed to escape so we did. Twice! (Yes we’ve got to the point where 1:1 time works best for all involved 🤪). The woods are a million miles away from social media, rolling news and TWITTER 😖 but luckily not a million miles from us in lovely Hertford.

It may be Monday but the sun is back. Go and get some fresh air and green space. 💚 ✌🏼✊🏼✊🏾✊🏿

This looks like a really useful resource from Supporting Steps. I took a workshop earlier this year with Jenna and found all her info really helpful - I’ll definitely be looking to use this new guide to help myself and my family navigate the tricky road ahead.

Due to the high number of families worrying about the current change in their children and the potential for ongoing wellbeing issues after the pandemic, I am putting together a
free support guide for families.

The guide will explain why children are finding things tough and why they are exhibiting behaviours that you may find difficult or worrying.

It will give you tips, step by step processes and activities to implement into your homes that will hopefully stabilise your child's emotions, instil them with the resilience they need to get through this difficult time and get them back on track; back to who they were before the pandemic hit.

If you want a copy; please message with your email address. The guide should be ready by the end of the week.

I would appreciate shares and help to get the word out, I want everyone to be able to access the guide! Jenna x

It would be unlucky and unfortunate to get counter- protestors again but if we do (which we think is unlikely) this is what you MUST do. You must not engage, must not respond and must not provoke them in any way. By doing so you are detracting from our wonderful speakers and musicians. Let them scream and shout but show you can remain calm.
