A Chinese company bases employee bonuses not on performance, but miles jogged

Guangdong Dongpo Paper will pay up to 130% of a person’s monthly salary
if they exercise enough.

There are a lot of things I’d love to get paid for at work, like the number of coffees I drink or the hours of music I listen to, but the time I spend working out isn’t one of them.

Still, one company in southeast China is doling out cash to employees for exercising.

Where in the world? Guangdong Dongpo Paper, a Chinese company with around 100 employees, plans to pay employees monthly bonuses based on how much they jog, according to Bloomberg. The bonuses may range from a pair of running sneakers to 130% of one month’s salary.

“A company can last long when its employees are healthy,” Lin Zhiyong, the company’s CEO, reportedly told the Guangzhou Daily.

Employees apparently enjoy the policy, and those who run the most are showcased on a company leaderboard. In November, it was led by an employee who ran more than 55 miles, according to LiveNow Fox.

Employees apparently enjoy the policy, and those who run the most are showcased on a company leaderboard. In November, it was led by an employee who ran more than 55 miles, according to LiveNow Fox. But people on Chinese social media app Weibo have had mixed reactions to the paper company’s policy. Among the criticisms, some users pointed out that many employees in China don’t have time to run because of the country’s infamously long working hours, Bloomberg reported.

Satellite view. Last year, Nutrition Solutions, a US-based meal-prep company, said it pays its employees extra for exercising, CNBC reported. If employees attend a workout class before their shift starts, they’re paid for that hour, based on their hourly rate.

“Making this investment into them becoming a better version of themselves is a fail-safe investment,” Chris Cavallini, the company’s CEO, told CNBC.

But not everyone believes that paying employees to exercise is a good idea. These incentives can cause discomfort for employees or be triggering for those with a history of eating disorders, Refinery29 reported.

So tonight, we are looking for songs about exercise, Jogging, working, bonuses, doing a good job or of course a song you think that best sums up this week’s news story,

News tunes time – In a the first week of 2024 we have seen Hundreds of flood alerts and warnings put in place across England and Wales, with some areas already hit by flooding after days of New Year storms, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says he is working on the assumption that he will hold a general election "in the second half of this year". Sainsbury's has announced pay rises from March as supermarkets continue their battle to retain workers and Glynis Johns, widely known for her role as suffragette mother Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins, has died at the age of 100.

But we have decided on this headline for our first Friday night Music finding quiz of 2024.

Hampstead pub ‘refuses to serve apple juice in champagne flute to child’ on New Year's Eve

The manager reportedly told the little girl's parents the glass 'could encourage her to drink'
A pub manager refused a family’s request to serve a five-year-old apple juice in a champagne glass, a mother has claimed.

Dr RenĂ©e Hoenderkamp said she and her husband wanted their daughter to be able to join in with the New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Old Bull & Bush in Hampstead, north London.

At around 7pm, they asked a waiter for the flute so all three of them could clink their glasses.

But the manager reportedly declined, saying “it could encourage her to drink alcohol and it’s not a great look”.

Dr Hoenderkamp, an NHS doctor who hosts a show on TalkTV, told The Telegraph: "We have a family habit that every meal we all cheers our glasses together, always, so we were in the restaurant and ordered two glasses of wine and we ordered her an Appletiser, because that was all they had. “For me, [the manager] made a judgment that I wasn’t capable of parenting my own child. You know, it’s just a glass.

“It just made no sense but again it’s this nanny state where parents are not allowed to parent.”

She went on explain that her child “never has a screen” but sits down and talks and plays game with her parents when they are out.

The Standard has contacted the parent company for the pub, Mitchells & Butlers, for comment.

A spokesman for the company told the Telegraph: "As a responsible retailer of alcohol, we do not allow the sale of alcohol-free beer, lagers or ciders to people under the age of 18, or drinks that could perceived by our team or other guests to contain alcohol.

"Our position was explained to the guest at the time and it appeared to have been accepted without question. No complaint was raised at the venue."

I am my number one!

A woman who spent 20 years saving for her dream wedding has thrown herself her own big day after not meeting the right partner.

Sarah Wilkinson, 42, decided to hold a wedding ceremony conducted by her celebrant friend at Harvest House in Felixstowe, Suffolk.

The credit controller said the occasion was a natural progression after she treated herself to an engagement ring.

"It was a lovely day for me to be centre of attention," she said.
The ceremony wasn't an official wedding, but I had my wedding day.

Ms Wilkinson, who lives in the town, said she splashed out ÂŁ10,000 on the celebration after saving each month and adding any extra windfalls she had, such as bingo wins.

The bride was surrounded by 40 of her closest family and friends for the ceremony on 30 September and another 40 people in the evening at the tennis club opposite.

So tonight songs about being alone, being single, being married, one or course a song you think best sums up this week’s news story.

Wind beneath my wings!

A flight from Dubai to Amsterdam had to make an emergency landing in Vienna after a fight broke out because one of the passengers wouldn't stop breaking wind.

The fart-induced fracas happened on 11 February aboard Transavia Airlines Flight HV6902 when two men sitting next to an apparently very flatulent man raised a stink about his repeated gas attacks, according to Fox News.

When the alleged perpetrator didn't stop, his disgusted seatmates reportedly complained to the airline crew, who apparently did nothing.

Instead, the captain issued a warning to the two complainants, accusing them of noisy and aggressive behavior and making threats, according to the NL Times.

When the freedom-from-flatulence fighters wouldn't stop griping about their fellow passenger, a fight broke out on the plane, according to the Dutch language newspaper De Telegraaf.

The pilots then made an emergency stop in Vienna and removed the complainants, but apparently not the farting man. Two women sitting in the same row as the angry men were also forced off the plane as well..
WIND BENEATH MY WINGS

All four people reportedly shared Dutch and Moroccan ancestry, but the two women claim they were simply sitting in the same row as the men involved with the incident.

The women are now taking the Dutch budget airline to court, according to the Metro.

"We had nothing to do with the whole disturbance. We distance ourselves from that. Do they sometimes think that all Moroccans cause problems? That's why we do not let it sit," one of the women said, according to De Telegraaf.

"We had no idea who these boys were, we just had the bad luck to be in the same row and we didn't do anything."

"All I will say is that the crew were really provocative and stirred things up," she added.

None of the passengers kicked off the plane were arrested because they had not broken any Austrian laws. However, they have been banned from flying Transavia Airlines in the future.

Partygate – Boris did fib about Parties!

An inquiry by MPs found the former prime minister had deliberately misled Parliament over lockdown parties and now opposition MPs are calling for Boris Johnson to pay back the public money used to cover a ÂŁ245,000 bill for his lawyers during the Partygate inquiry.

The top lawyers defending Mr Johnson were paid for with taxpayer funds.

Labour says Prime Minister Rishi Sunak should demand Mr Johnson "pays back every penny" of public money used to fund his legal defence.

The government has sought to justify the decision by claiming there is a precedent for supporting former ministers with legal representation.

But the government has not been able to name a single example of a former minister receiving taxpayer-funded legal support for a parliamentary inquiry.

Labour's deputy leader, Angela Rayner, said Conservative ministers had "utterly failed" to produce evidence to back up their assertion that funding Mr Johnson's legal defence followed convention.

"This murky arrangement that has seen the public left to pick up the tab for Boris Johnson's Partygate legal bills is not only without precedent but without justification," Ms Rayner said.

The Liberal Democrats have urged Mr Sunak to "do the decent thing and force Johnson to pay the bill himself".

"It's frankly unbelievable that hardworking taxpayers are being left to foot the bill for Boris Johnson's shameful antics," the party's Cabinet Office spokesperson, Christine Jardine, said.

The SNP's leader in Westminster, Stephen Flynn, said: "The legal costs, which the public have paid for, need to be recouped from Mr Johnson."

Mr Johnson's spokesperson referred to the government's response, explaining there is a long-standing position on legal support, justified by precedent.
