Progress at The Trin
Improvement scheme well underway at The Trin
Cleethorpes Community Sports & Education (The Trin) were awarded a life-changing grant of £2.6m from the Youth Investment Fund for the development of a major new project.
The Trin was one of the 43 youth services across England that have been awarded a grant to transform and level up opportunities for young people.
The new facility will boast a new boxing gym with 3 boxing rings, 15 punch stations and floor work area, a fully equipped gymnasium with cardio equipment, strength equipment and a performance area, a sports studio for use of aerobics classes, gymnastics, dance and table tennis. The facility will also have treatment rooms, classrooms, offices and changing facilities with showers and locker room.
As part of the developments, a large car park will be created at the rear of the main building to cater for the additional usage.
The new facility will predominantly be used for youth provision for sport, recreation and educational purposes; however, the general public will also have access to the facility along with local sports and community groups.
A big part of this project is to create further opportunities and partnerships with local groups to enhance support for the people of North East Lincolnshire.

Still no reopening date for Corporation Bridge
Rumours are continuing to escalate as North East Lincolnshire Council has failed to provide a reopening date for Grimsby’s Corporation Bridge after a 16-month-long closure.
The bridge closed to traffic in February 2023 to allow a £5m restoration project to take place. It should have reopened later the same year, but this has been delayed indefinitely after contractors discovered ‘additional damage.’ Councillor Stewart Swinburn, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport, said a new date would be announced by the end of March 2024, but this did not happen.
As a result, speculation regarding the reasons behind the delay and how long it will take reopen has spiralled wildly. While the rumours are unsubstantiated, the situation demonstrates the impact of the Council’s failure to provide a reopening date or clear progress updates.
More to follow.

Yesterday we met with Jason Stockwood and prospective MP Melanie Onn.
Discussing about her time as an MP, Melanie spoke of ‘learning from mistakes’, and the importance of listening to the needs of local people and working with communities to build trust.
Jason spoke about his recent article in the Guardian, where he referenced feelings of ‘disillusionment’ with national politics and the failure to deliver at a local level in recent years.
However, Jason said he believes Melanie & Labour can rebuild that trust through ‘delivery’.
He said: “I believe in her story and the fact she’s local and understands people, and the issues in the town. And quite frankly I think the reinvention of Labour, this town, and this country, is in good hands with Melanie.”

Local history spotlight: Ross Castle
We’ve been joined by local author Aidan Wright for a Grimsby and Cleethorpes history series. The second landmark in our line-up is Ross Castle!
Many visitors and locals tend to think that Ross Castle is a ruin of an ancient building, but…
Did you know?
- This isn’t actually the case. It is a ‘mock’ ruin built by a railway company during the redevelopment of the Pier Gardens in 1885.
- The Grade II listed structure was named after the then secretary of that company, Edward Ross.
- The top of the castle marks the level of the original height of the clay cliffs that stood before it.

Local history spotlight: Waltham Windmill
We’ve been joined by local author Aidan Wright for a Grimsby and Cleethorpes history series starting today.
To kick off the line-up of famous landmarks in our borough is Waltham Windmill…
Did you know?
- A mill has been stood on the site since 1666!
- The current windmill was built in 1880 by John Saunderson, a millwright from Louth
- During WW1, the mill suffered damage and the RAF wanted to demolish it as it was a hazard to aircraft. Luckily it was saved and future generations continue to enjoy tours of the site today!
- The Waltham Windmill Preservation Society formed in 1966 with the aim to ensure the mill remains for future generations following its long history.
